I`m a bit puzzled by this plane. It`s a dive bomber that carries a torpedo.

I guess that it will work as a TB when it carries a torp, and when it doesn´t carry it works like a DB.

This is correct ?

Another question is why the B6N2 series does not upgrade to it, or the upgrade will be activated when the first group is converted like WITP ?

Yes, I think Grace will dive bomb if the altitude is right (10k-15k).

Maybe because Grace is classified as DB, not TB? But I've been wondering that myself.

The Grace was the first of the carrier born multi function attack planes to see service.  The Douglas Skyraider was the first purpose built USN plane that could be used in both roles, though some late model Helldivers were delivered with torpedo equipment too.  There are some pictures of Helldivers on the Midway being loaded with torpedoes for an exercise.

By the time the Skyraider entered service, few navies in the world other than the USN had ships that would need a torpedo to sink them and all of them were allied to the US.  Anti shipping missiles were also getting more sophisticated, so the aerial torpedo pretty much went out of fashion about the same time as the Skyraider entered service, so apart from the torpedo tests during acceptance trials, the Skyraider never carried them.

Having one plane that can serve many roles is a big advantage on a carrier where storage for spares is tight.  It also gives more flexibility in attack profiles depending on the target.

Good, now why the B6N2a does not upgrade to the B7A2 ?

I only see the DBs that can upgrade to it

I thought the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was capable of carying a torpedo, but was not used in that role largely because the Japanese Navy ceased to exist at that point in R/L.

Do we know the altitudes + mission + load + ???? that will trigger torpedo attack versus db versus glide vs level versus skip on this a/c?  It is pretty unique in the game ...

I think you can set 'use torpedoes' or 'use bombs' in the group settings, like a regular TB.

Set the group to 'use bombs' @ 10K feet and they will divebomb is my guess.

The "why does B6N2 not upgrade to B7A" question is a good one.

I can't think of any reason why B6N's cannot do this. I suppose because of the DB designation it may have been overlooked at some stage in the programming process, perhaps because the line of TB's (designated TBs) ended with the B6N. The B7A was completely capable of carrying torpedo ordinance, and both DB's and TB's should probably be able to upgrade to it.

So I'm thinking: it should, but it doesn't.

The code upgrades automatically among same plane types and the Grace is designated as a dive bomber.  The game design kind of needs carrier bombers to be designated as torpedo bomber or dive bomber.  In a mod it would be a simple thing to set the upgrade path from the B6N2a to the Grace in the editor.
