The AI tends to base it's military strength on whether it is at war or not. If it has conflict it starts pumping out ships.
If I am having an easy time of it my strength does get way bigger than the AI empires but if I want a rougher time I put the Start New Game value of 'Aggression' of the Galaxy on higher than Normal and things get a bit more difficult!

Yeah, just start a war with 1 of the races and before you do, check the stats for military strength...then check after you have been at war a while and you will notice a big jump in their firepower.

And don't worry, if you start a war you will eventually have a huge enemy armada try to attack your biggest planets...AI tends to go straight for the jugular, rather than picking off the less populated planets.

I find the opposite... The AI rips my best mining sites to shreds while my larger and more powerful fleets try to catch them (usually unsuccessfully). In one game my economy was so crippled that I had to end the war with concessions so my whole empire wouldn't implode.

Probably depends on the alien races' stats. The ones that have come after me send 50-60 ships to my home planet. Too bad for them I found the nexus of the red claw and put a devastator pulse on my defense bases...it was over rather quickly.

well im finding that im able to send a fleet of 20 or so destroyers and a few troop transports to the AI's homeword and knock them out, at _any_ point in the war,

ive now got 3 AI homeworlds, and im unstoppable, with a military strength of 25k+ and around 80 colonies,

whats interesting, is there is a 105 colony AI - insect race, with only 7.8k military strength, but has around 800k spare cash, and is rolling in +80k per year..... and, im at war with them - been so for the last year or so, and he really isnt pushing my colonies at all....

im also playing on the highest aggression level.

How many Empires is the other AI at war with?
His forces may be focused elsewhere.

How many year in are you?

im about 30 or so years in, the other AI has wars with 1 other - but im finding the military strength, still isnt rising ... hmm

maybe if i "wait" and when his population + colonies reach a nice tax return, then its strength might be higher ..

The upcoming update for ROTS increases the military ship building of AI empires, especially when at war. Wait a few days and you'll be able to try it out for yourself

Thanks
Elliot

Did ya try to put fleet formation on automatic? The automated 4-ship (i set them to have 5 ships) strike forces do a pretty darn good job in my current game, automatically intercepting enemy strike forces, defending mining outposts even in other starsystems nearby, and can even capture small planet after small planet if you build enough troop transports for them to have 1 in each strike force.

That's good, but for those of us that want to make the game insanely hard...which race attributes would effect the building the most? Aggression, Caution, etc?

alexalexuk can I ask what level you are playing on for AI agression. IE Peaceful, Normal, Restless, Unstable, or Chaos?

I personally always play with Chaos

playing on chaos, always, everytime...

The only reason you have cash + cashflow is to build stuff, there is a few problem with this concept and the ai:

1) It seems to the AI - having millions in spare cash + 100-200k cashflow, and not building ships is fine - this should be fixed
2) Obviously the AI can see the stats of other empires it encounters, it should be able to see that their neighbours have military strength "x%" greater than theirs, it should start building more ships to compensate if possible
