In an effort to understand the command and control relationships in WitE, I have started a land war in Asia !

Generaloberst - Franz Halder: Leader, O.K.H.
Location: His Villa, SW of Koenigsberg.

A year into his promotion, but not privey to Hitler's " inner circle ", Franz finalizes plans for the attack on Russia.

A veteren from WW I, planning and administration his fortie. The Germans best administrator by far, but can he inspire his Generals to speedy conquest? Others have called for a more flamboyant Leader but for now the die is rolled. No immediate plans are in the works to relocate OKH, Halder will receive news from the front in relative comfort befiting his position in the Reich.

My approach for this game will focus on unlocked unit support and Command/Control issues that will develop with the push into Russia. I would like to background the Corp leaders and focus my reports on succesful ( and not so ) implementation of the tools of war. I hope to develop a deeper understanding of the mechanics to minimize operational losses and maximize resources available in the Grand Campaign.

( while using unlocked support and exploring the options of both direct and indirect support I will become proficient at when and where I should attach directly with my support and when I would benifit from multiple deployments of single support units over the course of each turn. )

In an effort to obtain the objectives put forth by Hitler, but still maintain a reasonable doctrine of conquest, I think I will have my hands full.

( I will avoid the stand and die orders from high command and will consider my digital soldiers precious and valuable not to be traded for mere points...only glory)

I will follow up with detailed reports on the three army groups that will commence hostilities. Their level of support and how I hope to deploy it for the following week ( 4 days of turn 1 ).

( edit : there appears to be a lot of support units in this game .... )

Army Group Center
... drive towards the cities of Minsk and Smolensk, and in great encirclements destroy the Soviet Armies stationed there. Then drive toward Leningrad, and along with Army Group North destroy the remnants of the Soviet Armies in the Baltic states and seize valuable ports for the supply of the campaign. Only after the bulk of the Soviet army was destroyed in Western Russia would Army Group Center then drive toward the Soviet capital. Hitler made this change conscious of the fact that despite capturing Moscow, Napoleon was defeated because he did not destroy the Russian army.

Feldmarshall - Fedor von Bock: Leader, Army Group Center
Location: At Camp, 30 miles west of Warsaw.
Ratings: 5/7 3-5-7-8 ( Mech/Inf Pol-Mor-Ini-Adm )

Some 1.4 million men, 14000 Guns, 2250 AFV and 1500 AC make up the forces available to Bock in the middle, To begin, and in addition to his corps, Bock is tasked with over 210 support battalions divied up amongst his corps. Almost 200,000 soldiers with 10 - 15 % of army group centers tanks and guns belong to these support units. So along with the shovels and bulldozers, command needs to use these units wisely.

What follows is Army Group Center's support distribution for 2nd and 3rd Panzer and opening turn objectives.

3rd Panzer Group

Generaloberst - Herman Hoth
8/7 4-6-8-7

XXXIX P corps : General - Rudolf Schmidt
6/6 4-5-7-7

VI corps : Generalleutnant - Otto Forster
3/5 3-4-5-5

V corps : General - Richard Ruoff
4/6 5-5-6-7

LVII corps : General - Adolf Kuntzen
6/6 4-4-5-5

Looking to drive towards Minsk, with all four corp having arty and pioneers I expect support in all the clashes to open up the line. After that I will ensure that either Kuntzen or Schmidt's HQ is close behind the spear.

I plan on assigning either 1 pioneer unit or 1 arty unit directly to a few units that will begin the drive.

2nd Panzer Group

Again, I will assign both arty and pioneer units directly to some units as Brest is surrounded and taken on turn 1. The panzers will then press on to close the middle pocket at Minsk.

Along the rest of the front I will do the same as the opening battles commence to ensure swift openings for our panzers to exploit! Assigning support units directly on an as needed basis, I will try ensure no units go into battle without them.

That is what the following turn reports shall relate, the successes and failures with our support units and state of command and control and supply status.
