...do you get the materials back? Does deconstructing it as a starbase or spaceport give you some of the material back that it took to build the ship? I ask because sometimes I face critical shortages of material and was wondering if a mass retirement of older ship classes would help.

I'll look into this, but I believe that all we get out of the process is that our maintenance
costs are reduced. Possibly Aures or someone else has looked into this before and will respond
soon. I guess I've been lucky enough with the economy building in my games to never had the
need to scrap a large amount of ships or bases to find out.

It happened in one game that an enemy wiped out a large portion of my mining bases and recovery was hard. Later on I wondered if I could have scrapped ships to help the economy recover.

ran a quick test.
created a star port on a remote barren planet
nothing in the cargo hold
reduced fuel (to check if fuel would be transferred)
created a ship
retired the ship
ship was dismantled
the full amount of resources of the original ship build were now in the cargo of the star port
all fuel was lost.

Excellent, good to know. I had trouble testing this today as ships were coming in and out constantly, moving resources. I didn't think to make a star port out in the middle of nowhere.
