I am pretty sure Frank Lloyd Wright was not involved, but in the case of Krisihima you could say George Thurston had a role.

WHOA!!!! What was that?!?!?! Oh, just another reference going over my head.

Kirishima and Kongo (and perhaps others) were designed and built in Britain (and later extensively modified). Thurston was the naval architect.

Oh, that was a serious comment. I was expecting something more in line with Gaudi or something.

I agree. "Sod off" seems to be more impactful than the Ameican equivalent. Also, the American version has a reflexive version as in "go **** yourself".

Is there a reflexive version of "sod off" or is it always meant to imply the help of an assistant?

Regardless, it does appear that Hiryu has "sodded off" or, perhaps more properly, "has been sodded off"?

Alfred, while it might be some distance indeed wouldn't you agree we should encourage ambition? What better means to do so than to demand the nigh-impossible and then watch the ingenuity of others ( whilst sipping martinis on a veranda ) as they strive to achieve these tasks --- and drown in their multitudes.

I am an expert in such matters. One of the best Armchair Generals around, especially after a cocktail or two.

OK, so let me make sure I understand. "Sodded off" man sunk. "Buggered off" means left the immediate area in some direction other than straight down.

****************Action about Fiji, June 27, 1942************

Numerous Betty and Nell raids attacked Suva and Nadi with the loss of at least 9 Nells and Bettys. Only one damaged Wildcat was destroyed on the ground. Suva airfield was moderately damaged but was still operational.

Two Jap Fast Tranpsort TF's were attempting likely evacuations and were mauled by the carriers, which were evidently not spotted on the previous day.

Here are the combatant losses (90% of the damage was done by the SBD's):

Sunk:

DD Hamakaze
DD Nowaki
DD Makigumo
DD Umikaze
DD Arashi
DD Okikaze

Very Heavy Damage:

CL Kinu
DD Wakatake
DD Hayate
DD Kazegumo
DD Uranami
CM Sokuten
(submarine attack)

Damaged:

DD Maikaze

Many AK's were also damaged or sunk.

The LYB's attempted a shock attack at Suva but weren't even close, instead suffering nearly 5,000 casualties, at least 25% KIA.

This is going to be as ugly for them as was our evac from New Scotland.

Must be something wrong with me. I took Spanish, Latin and even Greek in Junior High, High School and College and did well in all of them. But here I am, still confused about aspects of " English " english. As opposed to the American kind, sub-specialty; " Deep South "

It is catchy, though. I was walking through the mall the other day, looked at the Christmas tree an somehow, for no good reason, the phrase "crimbo deccies" popped into my mind.

So I am out shopping with Stalker Girl (temporary insanity...that's the best explanation I can come up with) and she shows me these Michael Kors watches. They are indeed really nice.

So I say, "Would you like something like this?"

"Oh no, I need a practical watch for everyday use."

"Then why did you show me them?"

"No I just like them."

"But you don't want one."

"No, there too much."

"But yet you showed them to me, surely there was a purpose to walking over here?"

"No, I just like them."

"What would you like then?"

"Oh, nothing, just not a vacuum cleaner."

So I went back later to buy one. I picked one out for about $200. There was another one very similar for about $450 but I couldn't tell the difference.

"What is the difference between these too?"

"Oh, that is a a ceramic band."

"But it looks exactly the same."

"Yes."

"But why is is so much more?"

"It's supposed to be better"

"Why would I want ceramic, I have plates at home?"

"I don't know sir. I'd have to ask my manager."

"Never mind I'll take the $200 one."

"Do you have any coupons?"

<I came prepared..now I am going to score!> "Yes, I have one for 20% off on any purchase over $200."

"Oh, It doesn't work on watches."

"But it doesn't say that."

"Yes, I know but it doesn't work on watches."

"Then why did you ask if I had any?"

"Because they teach us that."

"But that's silly. It is just going to make me mad."

"I'm sorry sir. Is there anything else?"

"Well, wait, I don't think we are done with the me being mad part. This is an obvious bait and switch."

"Yes sir, this model comes with a date display."

"No, not "date". I said "bait". You can't promise one thing in an ad and then change the rules at the time of purchase. That's called "bait and witch". It's an old fraud. You aren't really going to pull that on me 2 days before Christmas are you?"

"Yes, I think we are. I'd have to ask my manager, though........."

I lost that fight as well. I wanted the damn watch and if I go over to Nordstrom's it is just going to be 20% more. After all, am I really going to get bent over $40? That's like 10% of a speeding ticket around here. Merry Christmas Macy's and kiss my ***.

Yes. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this stuff. Conversation yesterday;

GFU: Honey, we need to get a few bottles of wine for the Christmas parties.
Me: Does that mean you want me to go out and get a few bottle of wine for the Christmas parties?
GFU: Yes.
Me: So why didnt you just say "Honey, could you go out and get a few bottles of wine for the Christmas parties"?
GFU: Thank you for getting the wine, honey.

Agreed. It is WAAAAAY worse than Jackspeak...call it "Jillspeak".

It is possible to gain advantage by pretending to not get the false negative, flip-flop, double entendre thingy.

Last year I bought Stalker Girl these seriously pricey black pearl earrings and necklace.

She seemed to like them but opined, "You shouldn't have spent so much"

Fine...I take that at face value. This year $200

Air losses. The F4F's and SBD's are fatigued from the orgy of killing. The carriers need to retire somewhere safe and loll about under the shade of an acacia tree for a bit.

The big transport convoy will arrive at Suva today, escorted by a surface group of 3 CA and 3 CL plus escorts detached from the carrier groups.

Truly it was only after getting married that I started to fully appreciate Admiral Farragut and his timeless exclamation, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!"

Young white fellow, dressed in linen pants, sitting at stern of large outrigger canoe with 7 big Samoan paddlers: <calls up to Long Island with a megaphone which he has strapped to his head like a coxswain on a racing shell > May I speak to the Captain, please?

Young white fellow, dressed in linen pants, sitting at stern of large outrigger canoe with 7 big Samoan paddlers: A pleasant 28th of June to you sir. It's the matter of the fee.

Cpt. Coughlin, skipper: What fee is that? This is a US Navy vessel.

Young white fellow, dressed in linen pants, sitting at stern of large outrigger canoe with 7 big Samoan paddlers: The toll fee, sir. $10,000.

Cpt. Coughlin, skipper: Toll? This the South Pacific. We transited international waters.

Young white fellow, dressed in linen pants, sitting at stern of large outrigger canoe with 7 big Samoan paddlers: Yes sir, normally that would be true, but you used the Panama/Samoa bypass. There is a fee. I have a contract with the Dept. of the Navy. Would you like to see it sir?.................

Wow. Well done, Cap'n. You didn't say anything about the 'extended service warranty' on the $200 watch for a mere $75 more. I mean, if you love her you'll want to protect this 'investment', right?

Do you think I am some kind of idiot?

I bargained them down to $70 on the extended service contract and it covers Electromagnetic Pulse Damage from nuclear weapons too (except in case of war). I almost felt guilty it was so easy.
