Those units east of Velikie Luki may have a reversed deployment; you have a tank division in the forest and a rifle division in the open; shouldn't it be the other way?

That's an impressive stack holding Kiev; it'll take a hundred thousand men to shove them out, if not more.

Think that deployment had to do with the positions they started in. I would generally like to do what you say, infantry in woods/swamp and armor in the open/forest but sometimes you have to take what the enemy gives you

Or i could have just gotten lazyI have been known to do that too

going to post a screen or two before I go to bed, feel free to give me advice if you can think of any. This is the situation before any moves in the Leningrad area. Will post more screens tomorrow before I move my units.

From the looks of this the Germans have a "no shyt go for broke, were gonna take this place no matter what you do" mentality about the city.

I have alot of troops in the area and I am wondering if i should risk an attack to try and dislodge him and let him know this is not gonna be easy. You can see the fort levels and they are pretty good in the city area. What do you guys think?
Personally I am tired of this sucker pushing me around

The Soviet side should dig dig dig and wait for Mr Blizzard until you launch a major offensive.

The comparative CVs of individual units is not just some show; one vs one the German divisions are much higher quality; attacking them with 3 or 4 times as many men as they have may hurt them but it'll also tire out yours, and they'll almost surely break when the Germans hit back.

He should of come around your eastern flank with his panzers, hes only going to grind them up in your defenses.

The eastern flank is all swamp - best way to kill your panzers by attrition and short range fighting. But on the western flank as right now they are also in trouble. I think his PzGroup will suffer bad losses without winning much ground.

Be sure to have construction battalions in the Army HQs, they help the digging.  Section 7.6.3.3 lists the maximum each HQ can have.

You need as many shovels as you can dig up.

Smolensk sector. I am thin on the ground north of there due to my defense of Leningrad. Have to pick your areas to thin out the defense.

Gomel tula sector. Am Leary here as there are a lot of panzer troops lurking around. Plan to fall back from this position a good ways.

Kiev sector, once I pull back from Gomel I will have to abandon this position as well of face encirclement. He has already crossed the Dnepr south of Kiev and that's BAD

The backup line you'll create for Velikie Luki might run through those rough terrain sections; your opponent could have trouble digging you out.

Odessa, this front is fairly quiet right now. Expect Odessa to fall pretty fast as the garrison is weak. Will do my moves after I get home from the store

Very, very true words my friend. Notice how you get the comments about proper defensive positioning, but you need the units and the movement points to get there! Then you need to possibly change army command so everyone is in command order. All this while Attila is ripping into what you just managed to cobble together last turn.

All in all good army positioning, but after loosing too many stacked units I don't stack multiple divisions in a hex anymore unless its vital.

I'd of attacked the Hungarian brigade that crossed the river south of Kiev! Why? Because I have to take it on the chin from the Wehrmacht, but I'll be damned if the Hungarians,Romanians,Italians or Slovakian troops are getting a free pass!

nothing negative against you Randall just an abused Bolshevik's blowing-off steam......

A three unit stack, defending right at the front, can be trouble; if they have to retreat you need an empty hex behind to fall back on, if not then someone will rout.

Of course you don't want an empty hex that far forward either unless you have a checkers deployment.

I understand that feeling Top, I feel abused myself, problem with that temporary satisfaction is the long term problem of his armor surrounding my attackers next turn as I commit to fight when I am not ready. I can wait

I understand the stacking and do keep it in the back of my mind Randall but sometimes you have to decide to make the enemy fight hard for spots, even in russia you start to run out of room to retreat

Finally got a turn back, holidays are a bummer Trying this using photo bucket so if the pictures are not large enough let me know.

First thing I will post is the Losses which were low again and the Leningrad front.

The Light black arrows are the german attacks last turn. He didn't advance after routing 2 units, must have been a tough fight
Red arrows are my planned pullback and the solid black arrows are where I expect him to attack.

Here is a shot of the Novgorod - Rzhev front. Looks like he is standing pat here.

Moscow is starting to heat up, i have included my probable moves on the map along with the forts already made. As you can see I don't have many units in front of him, Yet. I am not committing 16th Army to the front yet, they are digging in and training.

Orel front, falling back slowly as shown, he will press me for sure. I am thin on the ground here with no forces in the rear close. Kiev front is falling back as well as I can't afford the loss of to many divisions

Kiev front. Remember this is all prior to my moves. I have scare recon right now so I have no idea what is behind his lines.

Yellow line is what I think he will do, of course i could be wrong

Turn 9, and it is very similar, believe me I have sent as much industry east as I could. Would have been worse if he had moved faster

Will have to remember to leave the turn showing on at least one screenshot

Miller it would be nice if you'd say for each post what turn it is - or at least list the turn more often. Your map screenshots never have a turn with them so it's hard to tell at a glance what the date is.

Germany has caused light losses on USSR so far in this one I'd say. No way he gets Leningrad, and barely across the Dniepr on turn 9 with no great progress on any other front - grim situation for Germany just like in Tophat's game.
