I'm getting the hang of this game, but the private sector is still kind of baffling:

1- I'm guessing that freighters buy and sell resources with credits, which are then added to or subtracted from colony GDP, and that a resource's trading price is based on galaxy demand. Is that right? And is the situation the same for fuel? Also, does trade within your own empire work in the same way, or do freighters just ferry resources around free of charge aside from maintenance?

2- Is the private sector infinitely wealthy when it comes to buying ships, or is it tied to colony GDP in some way?

It has its own budget, pays maintenance on its ships etc, you can see it in the Empire summary window.  As for how it actually makes its money, I really couldn't tell you, I have not the slightest clue on the details.

Trade within works the same way, freighters definitely dont work for free.

No, if I remember correctly, the private sector has it's own capital that it uses to make purchases. It is not infinitely wealthy, but often becomes very rich and buys more ships (from you) and pays more taxes (to you). So if the private sector does well it definitely benefits your empire.

Thanks the1sean

That's honestly pretty amazingly detailed, I assumed that even though it seemed to work that way some of it just had to be abstracted.

Now I need to load up my Haakinosh trade empire and see how many caslon-guzzling space Caddies I can sell to my filthy rich private sector.

There are many facets of DW that, while impressive enough in their own right, become even more so when you think about how many other games have failed trying to do the same thing. And not just space games. DW does many things as well or better than any strategy game I can think of, regardless of genre. The automation model is one. The civil economy is another. Together, they really do give the DW universe a "living" feeling.

The game is complex, challenging, fun - all the things you would want from a good strategy game. But I also sometimes find myself just admiring how well it all just works. It's an impressive effort all around.
