:) Hello my fellow friends around the globe. Greetings from germany!!!:)
Yesterday, 20th of August 2002, i finally found my so long looking for War in the South Pacific, formerly released by SSI on C64.
I always wanted to play it, but on Commodore 64 it was unplayable. -It tooks hours before it accepted a key command.
now finally i found it here by MATRIX.
And had the same problem, like most users of up to date OS.
After, greeting screen a black screen.., it read nearly 60% of all posts in the forum.
About, this special problem-

and finally i solved it... yeahhh

:cool:
1. Open your game directory an right click on the"pac.exe"
and click "properties of..."
2. Select "memory" and apply following settings!!!

Conv. memory both "AUTO"
Expa. memory [EMS] "none"
Exte. memory [XMS] "2048" use "HMA"-yes
Workspace for MSDos... "AUTO"

-sorry, if the verb vary i use the german OS, so i translated it on
my own. If, you have any questions or problems with it, please
mail me....;)

By the way, i use WinXP on an AMD XP1800+ with 512MB DDR Ram, SB Audigy Ex, around 120GB HDD�s and DIRECT X 8.1a

I'm sorry to say, but that's another idea that doesn't work.
I have a Win2000Pro system and there seems to be no way of making PacWar run. ...very sad.

When you announced in your subject that it worked for Win2000, did you ever try it out?

Has anybody on this board seen PacWar run in an Win2000 environment?

I can get it to run the problem is the out of memory error when in the Carrier screen and when you ALT TAB it freezes the program and you can not get back into it.

No, not just the typical "Out of memory" issue that I had to deal with when I played PacWar under Win98.

With Win2000 I can't get the game to start. Just a flickering black screen that returns to normal after a moment.

Very sad, because I really liked the game...

I can get it to run on my Athlon XP2000 under Windows XP without any tweaks. Just click on PWI.bat, set up the sound card and it works no problem. Can Alt-Tab out and get back in no problem. Don't know why I can do it and you can't.

Thanks for trying to help, but....

there's no such file "pwi.bat" on my harddrive. I have PacWar 3.0.

...and again. Yes I heard that people have PacWar running under XP.

But I have Win2000Pro and up until now I have not found somebody who had this game running with that dreaded OS.

Thanks !, Your settings work on my XP system where previously I had only got a blank screen. I get an 'out of memory' warning in the carrier display, but it doesn't seem to stop the game working. A slight grahiics distortion it causes disappears when I move to another display.

Changing the allocated memory can be helpful, but I believe that the real cure lies a little deeper. For Windows 2000/XP, the key is a "config" file, but not "config.sys". DOS programs under NT-type operating systems use custom "config" and "autoexec" files, so we'll need to create some of our own. Find the "AUTOEXEC.NT" file. Open it using Notepad or some other text editor, and REM out or erase the lines:

lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

The reason: PacWar does not need the "DOSX.EXE" file to be loaded, since the game was written for real mode instead of protected mode. Save the file as "AUTOEXEC.PW", preferably into the same directory as the other Pacific War files. At this point, you should also copy the CONFIG.NT file over to a "CONFIG.PW" file, also in the PacWar directory. Select the "PAC.EXE" file and then click your right mouse button and select "PROPERTIES". Go to the program sheet. There select "ADVANCED". If you have not changed them already the two editable lines should read %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT and %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT. Change these to the "CONFIG.PW" and "AUTOEXEC.PW" files.

There should now be well over 600K of DOS RAM available.
