So are we talking Mass Drivers, nukes, Beams?

I know I have to research them.

Do I put them on Capitals, Cruisers?

When and how would I know if I need them?

This opens up the whole invasion thing. How can I observe this or the such? Is there a progress bar or something? How can I tell how many troops I need?

Thanks much.

You only need 4 destroyers and pack them with Nukes and watch enemy homewords burn in little time.Nukes also destroy troops.

The bombard effect was toned down in the latest beta patch but is still way too powerfull in my view.

I only used Bombard once.  I was fighting against the Dhayut who were extremely annoying because their hyperdrive was way faster than my own and I couldn't respond to their attacks in time.  I took a couple of their worlds but it didn't make much difference.  The only high population planet I had was my homeworld, so I was training all my troops there, I had a reasonable army and then out of nowhere a fleet appears and attacks my homeworld, I survived the attack with 1 unit of troops left

So I thought, screw it, I bombarded their homeworld, reducing the population from 6 Billion to about 20 million, that was the end of their economy/troops/everything.  My rep took a hit, but I think it only went from Admired back to Dubious.

What is weird to me is how just about how most weapons could be used in space and still be able to affect planets in real life. For example, a "rod of god" is basically a shaft of metal with rockets. Just throw it at a planet, let it get up to a fairly high speed, and momentum will take care of the rest. Using a combination of mass and speed generally results in sizable explosions, such as what annihilated the dinosaurs and those many craters on the moon. Heck, Mars might have lost the ability to be a life-sustaining world due to such an impact. Here is a list of weapons and how they might affect planets in my opinion. To me, Bombard Weapons shouldn't be if weapons can destroy planets, but about removing resistance without ruining the planet in the process.

Rod of God
A metal shaft with rockets, it just runs into things at high speed to make them go boom. Very destructive, messy, but simple and cheap.

Missiles
Unlike a Rod of God, these contain explosive, chemical, radioactive, or some other kind of attribute in the form of warheads. They usually can perform evasive manuevering and can be precisely guided to a location, and be armed with 'the right stuff' to take out a target. This translates doing more damage to the people of a planet, but less ecological damage depending on the type of warhead, provided the missile is detonated before impacting something at extreme speeds.

Lasers
These are actually rather terrible when it comes to attacking some planets. A planet with an atmosphere has a significant level of resistance due to cloud cover and magnetism, which can really screw up a laser by changing it's general direction and making it lose cohesion. While a large amount of lasers would still do something to an atmospheric planet, they would be fairly inaccurate and less powerful. However, a planet without an atmosphere wouldn't pose such issues.

Anti-Matter
Possibly one of the most destructive and rare things in the universe, an anti-matter bomb uses a strong gravity field to contain an amount of anti-matter while ensuring that regular matter doesn't make contact. This bomb is directed towards a target, and simply has to touch something to begin an reaction. Matter and Anti-Matter are so compatible, that they basically try to run into each other at high speeds. Nuclear explosions basically have two atoms smashing into each other forcibly, but the speed at which it is done and the effectiveness pales to Matter. There is essentially a 100% conversion rate of Matter into energy once it meets Anti-Matter, compared to an Nuclear weapon's 2% or so. Probably the best way to reduce a planet, or any other physical object, into energy.

Plasma Weapons
The combination of ionized gas and using a laser to superheat it, an plasma weapon can be used to create extreme heat, exceeding the skin of the sun. Furthermore, a plasma weapon could potentially be applied for anti-electronic usage, which may offer applications in non-lethal takeover of a planet. However, plasma weaponry tends to disappear rapidly, due to radiating light and generally exploding. Theoretically, finding means of magnetic confinement that extends beyond the gun barrel would significantly increase the range of plasma weaponry, due to keeping most of the energy in one place. A planet with a strong magnetic would probably disrupt plasma weaponry, due to damaging the "magnetic bottle" field that is likely to used for making plasma weaponry practical.

Actually, Sabin, your first suggestion is probably the most practical....Kinetic impact weapons.  All you would need is a large enough mass and the means to accelerate it and voila!  All of the power of nuclear weapons with none of the radioactive fallout and the ability to conserve (I would imagine) hard to come by antimatter for those really nasty customers.

Ya. Come to think of it, an alternative to the Rod of God would be Railguns, which are basically giant magnets that shoot bullets at extreme speeds. You probably would use them as a smaller and more repeatable version to the rods.

Yup, that is the general term for it. :)

They actually were a big feature in Stars!, in that you can catapult packets of resources to other planets, to help them or to blow them away.

Does anyone know if you use bombard weapons if you take a reputation hit? Where can I find that info? How do I know if my ships are bombarding?

Yes, we do and it's in the manual and in the galactopedia as well (under quite a few sections)
not sure how you can find this out post factum though, i think you cannot

actually, if you have this on auto you can just follow one of your attacking fleets and check if the AI bombards....if it does it in one case it's a pretty safe bet it does it all the time
since i play on manual i did not observe this, maybe someone who uses auto can confirm

i doubt that the AI does it; if it does, you'd get a horrible rep all the time and you'd be in big trouble all the time with everyone. So my money in on the AI not using it bet.

Not that much if used sensibly, and if the race you are bombarding has a poor rep they care very little.

Bug races should always be exterminated.

Ah, you have hit the mass driver right on target. I am fighting the Dayhut and I feel that they really have no rights to exist. Anyway, when i ran into them they had a 57 colony empire and quite a number of ships. They also have 'Way of Darkness' as a government! I went to war after I refused some demands from them. I have done very well and taken half of his territory. I issue orders to 2 or 3 fleets of ships that have troops on them and put the old bullseye on his nearest planets and let auto do the rest.

When SEE the actual fights, I see my fleets jumping in, fighting and moving over the planet. I click on the planet and see 'troops' on the lower left corner window. How do I read this?

I have noticed that I sometimes do NOT aquire a planet even after I crushed all in space resistance. How do I read that little graph/line where it says troops? Should I equip bombard weapons? The bugs must be crushed like the vermin they are.......

if some of the troops appear in read that means you've got them on the ground and they are figthing the defensive forces.....until they win you won't have that colony
if you don't see them then either you lost the ground battle or they never landed

I never use Bombard as I always want the planet's population to appreciate the benefits of civilisation, become loyal citizens and pay their taxes on time. Which they can't do if they are radioactive dust.

Aye! Also, I generally like diversity in my empire.
"If we all reacted the same way, we'd be predictable, and there's always more than one way to view a situation. What's true for the group is also true for the individual. It's simple: overspecialize, and you breed in weakness. It's slow death."

On the other hand, It's simple: breed in Boskara, and you breed in ugliness.  It's a slow death.

Damn, Woodman! I almost laughed myself to death!
Seriously though, Boskaras have their uses despite being annoying buggers. They make great troops If you haven't been lucky and found some Shakturis one way or another.

no matter their ugliness...breed them all, that's the key to diversity; and to having convenient scapegoats when needed

Anyone remember a novel called "FOOTFALL"? Basically elephantine aliens attack Earth. There ancient warrior code was if they got an opponent on the ground and held them down with their foot, there opponent would have to concede.

So, their method of planetary attack was based on the same theory. They'd tow in a astoriod and drop it on the planet. It would do serious, but not world ending, damage. They would then presume the race that owned the planet would concede.
