I don't think I can spend the 16 hours odd that it will take me to get it right..does anyone have one or know where I can get one? I'm looking for an allied game :)

Trial and error is the only way, mate. There is no shortcuts.

You don't have to "get it right", or spend 16 hours doing 1st turn. There's always turn number 2...

just hit critical spots first turn. figure those out. then get to deeper spots next few turns.

turn off auto build so you don't have to go change EVERY spot later. Just build where you'll need forts, want fields, and use ports. nearer fronts.

In my first game I did the first turn in a few hours, just to anxious to see how it went to do everything. you'll only know how to do it later, after about ten turns as you see where the japanese go.

make sure to start malaya evac right away. get all units to singapore quick. same with philipenes. send everything to clark and hold for a few months until supplies are gone. no way to save either. just take as much time as possible.

hide carriers quickly. don't be brave.

good luck!

Apparently the file sizes of saved games is too large to be attached to this forum.

Only the tech forums can receive files that large.

I tried to upload mine for you and got an answer as to why I can't in the tech forum.

I have to agree with Puhis though, I don't believe he was being trite. While there are many, many things to be done on turn 1, it is a long game and one day's delay in getting anything started has minimal impact.

There are a few heads up you ought to know about though. Naval flight from Manila will get slaughtered by Japanese submarine layed mines if you are not very careful about the order in which you create TFs. It appears that TFs leave port in the order they are created. This is something I have never seen explained anywhere and had to be learned by trial and error. The first TFs created there MUST be Minesweeping TFs if you want to plow a path through the mines without leaving many ships at the bottom of the harbor. I typically create 3 MSW TFs to lead the way out with purpose built minesweepers in the lead TF.

Also, when evacuating ships from Singapore to Batavia, don't let the TFs choose a path straight down the slot or you will lose many ships to the subs lurking there. Force their path with waypoints directly to the Sumatra coast and then down along the coast between Sumatra and Bangka island. This will get you around the subs.

Hey, I just had an idea. I'll attach my saved game in the tech forum in the thread where I asked about attachment problems so you can download it there. Be advised it is an Ironman scenario with a very aggressive first turn sorty of SAGs from Pearl hunting for the KB.

Sardaukar's AAR/Tutorial can be used as a template. He goes thru the initial setup and even gives a link to the file.

The game is two-day turns. He explains his settings and you can change them to suit yourself. I changed it to one day settings, put Combat Animations ON, etc. I believe it is a 7 Dec start with no Quiet China (i. e., Scenario #1).

Read the thread, it is invaluable.

The thread is here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2564541

The link to the setup is: http://sardaukar.suntuubi.com/datafiles/userfiles/File/wpae014.pws

N. B.: You will have to go thru all your Bases and organize your cargo and transport shipping - he didn't do that. Also, he is ahistorical - he preps for certain things that didn't happen IRL, like getting the Aussie brigades out of Singapore. IOW, he tries to give the Allies a leg up on the Looming Catatstrophe and tries to keep it to an Unmitigated Disaster.

He also has another link to the game in question as of 2 Jan 42 - it's in the thread.

Good Luck!

Well..if you are interested, I have both first turn and Jan 2 1942 save available in my Newbie Grand Campaign Tutorial:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2564541&mpage=5&key=

Posts #41 and #122 have links to saves. Just read the AAR explanations to see what has happened before that date.

I don't think that there are any minesweepers in Manila at the start, are there? What are you using?

Actually there are 6 puprose built minesweepers at Manila. I spilt them 3 each between the firt two minesweeping TFs I create and put the 4 destroyers in the third TF.

Here are the first turn results:

TF 277 encounters mine field at Bataan (78,77)

Allied Ships
AM Tanager
AM Bittern
AM Finch

11 mines cleared

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 278 encounters mine field at Bataan (78,77)

Allied Ships
AM Whippoorwill
AM Lark
AM Quail

29 mines cleared

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the frst TF:

Here is the third:

As you can see from the results posted above the third TF had nothing to do this time. Last game the 3rd TF had one DD hit a mine in attempting to clear them because the first two TFs didn't get the job dione as well as they did this time.

The one drawback of this approach is that there are no escorts protecting the cargo, transport and more importantly the support TFs. I figure I need to deal with the mines first and the subs bound to be lurking further out later. Be sure to switch your minesweeping TFs over to ASW TFs on the next turn. While they may not be directly escorting the other TFs, they are out in front of them and should encounter the subs before the other TFs do.

Problem with providing saves is that you have to explain what you did before the save. As you can see from my topic, this is multi-page adventure (and I only wrote about major things of it).

I strongly suggest anyone going into grand campaign, to issue their own orders. You learn way faster that way.

If not:

Load the save, alt-tab a while to read my reasoning WHY I issued those orders and feel free to adjust.

The way I see it, the Allies took about 6 months before they started getting things right... I'm nearing end of March 1942 and gradually coming to grips with various priorities. The first turn, and the second... and the 92nd aren't going to be good for the Allies so take it as a learning experience.

I think you can just take care of the hot spots on the first turn and have a more realistic response to the attack on Pearl. I doubt that every ship in the fleet got new marching orders on Dec 7/8. If you use someone else's orders eventually you'll still have to find out where they are going.

Indeed.

You DO NOT have to do everything during turn 1 as Allies. It is bit different when playing Japan, but as Allies, if you wish, you can spread the workload among several turns.

Here's my response to a similar request, with the built in links to my spreadsheet thread and the posted save file

quote:

ORIGINAL: Houtje

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be willing and able to send or post a save game-file of their first turn of the allied GC (scen 1, vs AI). I've put about 20 hours into my first turn already and am still slightly overwhelmed. I've taken a look at Kull's spreadsheet, which is very useful btw, but I would just like to examine and click through the units and bases on the first turn of an experienced player (convoys, replacement settings, development, etc. etc.).

I am NOT looking to profit from someone else's dirty work by simply using their save files, but I hope to gain some insight into how experienced players cope with this beast of a game.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Unfortunately this subforum doesn't allow for the upload of anything as large as a Save Game file, but I created another thread in which I've posted the Save file that results from taking all the actions listed in my spreadsheet (for those interested, check this thread). Keep in mind that this is "Day 2" of Scenario 2. I didn't post it earlier simply because you don't learn anything by just playing from someone else's starting position, but for those who are using the spreadsheet as a guide, it might be helpful.

I like the Ideas of the spreadsheets kull talked about as well as the AAR guide Sardaukar has done. The fist turn is the main reason I can't get back into AE, I feel once I get rolling past the first month I could really get into this. I would really like to use these guides with the quiet china senario, would that work ? Does anyone have some first turn or first month saves for quiet china with similar strategies eployed as these guides ?
