Well, the release date for Shogun: Total War 2 is set. Lots of interesting games to come out over the next two months...

How certain is the verity of the release announcement? I'm still waiting on Duke Nukem, after all...

That's been set for May 3rd, although Thread knows why... Anyway, I'm buying Deus Ex: Human Evolution, Shogun 2, Homefront, Dawn of War II: Retribution and Dragon Age II, all before the end of March.

Keep dreaming re: Duke Nukem Forever.......

Still have Fallout New Vegas on the to do list, but i have Bioshock 2 and Wolfenstein to finish first.

I don't care about DNF, but it's the publisher that's said it themselves.

It would be nice to see it. Duke is a classic....will probably get around to playing again after many a years layoff. ("Blood", based on the same engine was a recent hoot) Actually i still have the expansion disk Duke Nukem "Manhatten" never played it. Should give it a round.

Duke was log-approved.

Working through FNV, finished all the Boomer quests the other day and retrieved the platinum chip. Got some loose ends to tie up for the NCR and then it's time to sort out the Brotherhood of Steel, the Khans, Mr House and some deathclaws.

Undisclosed Problems with F-35 Fighters Surface in Pentagon Report

By Shane McGlaun
DailyTech

Jets have significant issues with engines and other componnets

The F-35 Lightning II program can't win for losing. The long running issues with the aircraft have been well documented and have led to delays in the program. Many of the flight issues with the F-35 have centered on the more mechanically complex F-35B STOVL version of the fighter aircraft. A new report has surfaced that highlights some previously unknown problems with the F-35 program.

According to a report compiled by the Pentagon Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=5484169&c=AME&s=AIR), the F-35 aircraft all suffer from various problems with handling, avionics, afterburner, and the helmet-mounted display systems. The F-35A and F-35B variants are specifically said to suffer from "transonic wing roll-off, [and] greater than expected sideslip during medium angle-of-attack testing" according to the report. The report also notes that many of the components being used in the aircraft are not as reliable as expected.

The F-35B has had various issues with subcomponents in the past, specifically the ones that allow the door behind the cockpit to open so the aircraft can get the air needed for vertical landing. The F-35B has made successful vertical landings recently.

One key problem that is common on the aircraft is an issue described as afterburner "screech" reports Defense News. Apparently, the F-135 engine provided by Pratt and Whitney has a problem where airflow causes severe vibrations that prevent the engine from reaching maximum power.

The helmet-mounted display system in the aircraft is also having issues, but the report doesn't delve into this exact problems. The F-35 has no traditional heads-up display like other aircraft flying today - all pilot data is on a display inside the helmet.

Lockheed martin spokesman John Kent said, "The F-35 air system advances Helmet Mounted Display technology to capabilities not flying today on any other tactical platform. With this advancement in technology come challenges that the program is actively managing. The challenges are being worked with the supplier." Kent goes on to say, "While there are no current plans to change suppliers, options are being considered in parallel that mitigate the most stressing issues. Flight testing is proceeding with the HMD installed and used with no safety of flight concerns."

The report also mentions an issue with the aircraft’s onboard inert Gas Generation System that helps prevent oxygen from building up inside the fuel tanks where it becomes a fire hazard. The report recommends a redesign for the system.

None of this will prevent the aircraft from going into service, and likely being a very capable system. All it means is more delays and many more $$$$$$.

I'm with Mike on this.

Leo-if you pay attention to 'press releases' about recent equipment production, you'll always be able to find these. I'm not too young to remember 60 minutes' 'expose' on how the Bradley fighting vehicle was a flammable deathtrap, the M1 Abrams a totally inferior battlefield implement or the Stryker a horrendous time and money suck. Usually these systems get worked out to most people's satisfaction, these are just initial (usually overblown) teething problems.

I sincerely hope you are right...

BTW, the original M2 Bradley and M1 Abrams were not as great machines as they are now (although much can be said about M2 Bradley even now)!

Leo "Apollo11"

Compared to 'simpler' machines like the BTR or the BMP? I'd certainly opt for the M2 or Stryker, thank you very much! True-they may be much more expensive, but I'll trade the $ for safety / surviveability / redundancy.

As a LAN-circle FPS party game, there was nothing that quite compared. Laser trip-bombs, anyone?

BAM!

Good work Mike!

As I'm currently doing some work with the hardware, It's good to have thread brothers who can keep on top on LogBoy in the meantime.

I think our whole Sweden/North Carolina vibes are in sync again.

Ft. Bragg vs. Sweden. Not that I'm disloyal but I'd have to root for Sweden in that one. The women are just better looking.

Don't limit yourself to just Ft. Bragg. There are quite a few pretty "Carolina girls." I married one.

Besides, there must be a few ugly women somewhere in Sweden, right?

OK, how about we compare weather?

Even given all that, I'd still have to root against a state that has the Dukies.

Better Dukies than Gators!

Watching True Lies with DU and wife unit. Jamie lee Curtis was never yummier. Except for that one scene in whatever that film it was she's topless in.

True Lies was a fun Arnie flick. My favorite scene in the movie (other than the Harriers taking out the roadway with AGMs) was the passionate kiss between Arnie and Jamie Lee's characters with the atomic fireball rising in the background.

On second thought, the Harrier greasing the entire floor of bad guys with the electric cannon was pretty good too...several good scenes...

My favourite scene is Jamie squatting down in her skimpy outfit.

I've done the shooty, blowing things up bit. Women are much more fun to look at. Especially Mrs P (you never know who's reading this).

Hi all,

I sincerely hope you are right...

BTW, the original M2 Bradley and M1 Abrams were not as great machines as they are now (although much can be said about M2 Bradley even now)!

And how did that turn out for the Germans? No-one important is going to ask me, but I'm on the internet dammit so my opinion must be heard!

It's all well and good having something that's massively better than anything that your enemy can field, but sheer weight of numbers will carry them through anyway. For example, does the RN need the F-35 which it can afford in modest numbers or would they be better served with something along the lines of the F/A-18 which we could maybe afford in numbers good enough to make having a CV worthwhile.

Well... the Germans didn't invent that in WWII... Romans did almost 2000 years ago... they were always outnumbered by their opponents (in most cases barbarians) but they still managed to keep their republic / empire for few hundred years through better military equipment / weapons and superior training, command and military skill...

BTW, F/A-18 is nice and good - but military has to think about the future... the Hornet would not be sufficient (and good enough) in 10-15-20 years...
