Thank you, Jon, got no better tutor in handling the Japanese than you.

It's February 18th 1942 and here we are with another update.

HORN ISLAND - fell a few days ago. Should be a nice spot when my Australia invasion pops up. 2 coaches of tourists moved elsewhere for now, while one remains, taking lots of photos.

BURMA - Mandalay was a deserted place and was taken. Burma Corps amassed in Shwebo, relying on river crossing defense. I'm crossing the river with one full size division + 2 guards regiments along with some tanks. This should suffice. One of my units secures the Lashio direction, the base itself looks deserted, too.

JAVA - invasion forces load up in Palembang. This will be covered by 3 fleet CV's directly and 2 CV's operating in Singapore region, barring any Brit around. 4 BB's, 3 CA's and numerous DD's form the cover. D-day in 2 days (next turn) probably.

AIR WARS - no real A2A combats so far. I even haven't got an ace yet! Bill is evacuating everywhere he can, so no chance to see some dogfights. That results in HUGE stockpiles of zeroes and oscars - which I utilize to upgrade my sentais. Moved a 27 zero unit up Burma to Magwe - I hope for some nice sweeps from there.

SUB WARS - Allies won last few turns. First, some steroid American DD's forced a glen subn to surface and pounded it with 5-inchers. There was a prompt "sub slips beneath the waves" - but this was FOW, because my I-boat was still afloat in orders phase. I ordered it to commit a seppuku, because nearest Japanese port was Kwajalein, thousands miles away. Then SS Silversides took out a 27 point tanker at Moresby. AAAAARGH! Next a Dutch sub got pounded near Darwin. Hooray! But then again - Silversides sinks ANOTHER 27 point tanker at Moresby. Escorts (APD's and E's) found the sub and made it's oil leak badly, but far from sinking. I hate this sub, and I love this game - a book written by a navyman stationed on the sub would be just thrilling - four day's of cat and mouse with Japanese, 1st class prey, struggle to survive...

February 20th, 1942

JAVA INVASION - IT'S ON, like Jon Davies used to sing before he got very, very old. My forces landed at Merak facing no opposition except His Majesty Submarine Trusty, which fired two times on my screening DD's with no effect. 7 near misses counted, so he's probably going to stay in a yard for few weeks. Or this is FOW. After securing Merak, my troops will march by a major road west (south!) of Batavia to project a encirclement, and that SHOULD scare Bill out.

SUMATRA - my troops march up to Sabang proceeded with tanks. No opposition so far. I've landed a force at Bengkalis to secure it's natural resources and fossil fuels, so much needed to feed hungry babies back in Tokyo. My other tank units is struggling with Dutch at Padang, with no immediate success. I have to airlift some infantry to end this, because Padang is mine.

AUSTRALIA - fast transport TF unloaded a nav guard in Port Hedland, finding a large array of refugees - even the Manila Base Force! Wow! Will attack next day.

KIDOS - big guys are supporting Java endeavor. Little ones made a circle in the Pacific, finding only PT boats and some Catalinas in the air. Talk about Sir Robin!

February 26th, 1942

JAVA - Bill has moved his forces inland, relying on mountain hexes. Batavia is left with only token force left. Auxiliary landing to the east is expected to take place next turn, with 4 fleet CV's escorting. No contact with the enemy has been made so far - land or sea. Some Dutch planes tried to interrupt the landings, but they were destroyed.

CHINA - SOME OPPOSITION AT LAST - hordes of Chinese occupy Sian (approx 3300 AV) and Chihkiang (2500 av). The latter was shock attacked last turn by my 3 divs and some tanks. Since it's a forest, Chinese are very competent there. My attack was crushed, and I have MANY disabled squads. 6th division is a 61 AV regiment now. I'll wait there and recover. In Sian I have ~3300 av also, but this is an open terrain - I'll try to attack in a few turns to estimate my chances.

BURMA - Lashio is taken by a guards regiment. Shwebo is defended by 1st Burmese division and some Hindu division. My wo attacks achieved net 1:1 results, so next turn it's time for a shock attack to end this little campaign. On the other side of the country, Akyab is defended by only one unit - I'll bomb tomorrow to determine what is it, but dice are already thrown - invasion force left Singapore to quickly grab the Akyab prize and to open a road for Chittagong.

AUSTRALIA - I'm moving 2 more divisions to Darwin, just to simulate a push southward. who knows, maybe I'll achieve something? Meanwhile, my Bieeties sorted few times to attack resources in Cairns and Townsville. Last turn they finally reached the opposition - a conglomerate of P-39's, Wildcats (VMF squadron) and some Kangaroo Kittyhawks. 3 of my bombers went down, so no more flights for now.

OTHER STUFF - I'm adding the Junyo carrier to Baby Kido. This should form the force able to contest even a 2 CV opposition, set to defend the outer perimeter.

Thank you very much, and lucky I sure am! It's 28th february 1942 and...

SIAN - ... is left empty for me! That 3K Chinese av I was afraid to attack turn 1st, just... left the city. My troops bombarded for 2 days (doh!), killing 3 old Chinese women, a wounded horse and a remarkable collection of trees! Way to go IJA! I'll take the city next turn of course.

JAVA The other landing proceeded as planned. A division + tanks + some engineers. 2 enemy subs heavily wounded in the process, an electric boat probably sunk. Kido whacked an airstrip in central Java where all enemy ground units are located, but no planes there to bomb...

BURMA - Shwebo is taken by force, and Burma Corps' defensive position is broken. They will be chased and destroyed. In other news - the unit in Akyab is some minor battalion, the invasion is crossing the Malakka Strait now.

BABY KIDO - Junyo is about to join those guys at Kwaj next turn. That makes a force of 2 CV's (Kaga, Junyo) and all CVL's and CVE's Excluding Hosho at my disposal in central Pacific. i'll plan a raid south next few turns - Pago Pago looks promising, my sub torpedoed an xAK there last day

It seems that I didn't update this AAR for too long - not that MANY turns were swapped, but a few actually, yes...

It's 8th march 1942

CHINA - Empty city of Sian was seized by my mighty army, which split into 2 forces, trying to pursue and catch fleeing Chinese. The main body is 1800 AV, another corps is about 600AV. Well, it was 600 - after crossing a river it was faced by Chinese daredevils, achieved 1:2 net result and took some bloody nose. No matter, my LBA will temper those senseless defenders. Don't they know the Japanese Empire means only good for them? probably they don't, so it's my job to teach them so.

BURMA - Allied forces leaving Shwebo are a subject of intensive care provided by beautiful duo: Betty and Sally. Those 2 nurses make war comfortable for 5 - 10 enemy squads every day. After all, a grave in warm, wet place like Burma is a comfortable one, isn't it? News from this theater is, that my Akyab invasion took place and will take the base next turn. Only one battalion, 6/18th Royal Garwal is defending the place. I don't know these troops, as I'm not that familiar with allied OOB, but my forces overwhelm them either way. I just lack air support there to begin immediate air operations, but this will come later. No rush.

JAVA - Batavia is taken, as only Roodenburg Battalion and ABDA HQ were defending the place. All allied forces gather in Bandoeng, but this will end soon. I think. Some Dutch air forces were trying to bomb my troops in transit, but they were decimated by zeroes already on CAP at Semarang. Java will be mine soon!

SUMATRA - my infantry regiment chased the Dutch off Padang, and my tanks are now pursuing. That means organized resistance on the island has ended.

INDIA - lot's gonna happen next turn there - or at least so I think. 4 of my fleet CV's will commence a raid on shipping near Ceylon, and if no targets are found the planes are ordered to strike on Colombo port. There were 5 CV's bound for the endeavor, but I've detached Akagi and some surface raiders to catch enemy mysterious ships, recently seen on in the ocean N-NW off Sabang. Those may be AMc's and some other tiny stuff - but those can be tankers as well! Can't resist finding out which. My guess is that 4 CV's will do the job. if not, the fault for splitting Kido is on me.

OTHER AREAS - My troops landed in Luganville unmolested. This is the part of my plan of confusing Bill - to project an expansion in every direction, and then invade OZ to trigger the greatest battle of our times! Or something like that.

10th march 1942

BURMA - Finally, we've got some air activity over Burma... from the allied side, that is. 3-plane section of some AVG squadron attacked my Sallys downing 3 of them, and Hurricanes over Akyab killed 2 Betties. Precautions needed, as I've been lulled to the moment too much by Bill's passive Burma behavior. Oh yes, Akyab is taken, and it's already well supplied. Only AV support is needed to make this base a thorn stuck into His Majesty Royal Ass in Calcutta. AV support is scarce in Burma now, but I'm working on it. In other news: A sound detector arrived in port Blair, strengthening this base as a forward observation depot and a fighter nest. Or at least I hope so.

INDIAN OCEAN RAID - Failed I think. Due to weather and die rolls only small part of my predators managed to get airborne, and despite having lots of targets in the area, Vals only managed to put a 250kg SAP bomb into DD Nestor, leaving it "on fire, heavy damage". It probably won't sink. In the afternoon that turn more Vals attacked this DD TF, but with no result. I've lost 5 carrier planes on this, and this must be considered a failure. I'll try again tomorrow, but no tactical surprise there after last try.

DEI - My troops landed in force at Koepang, finding a mixture of garrison battalions and regional base forces. Japanese will attack tomorrow and should take the base.

AUSTRALIA - Bill put some Airacobras and Kittyhawks on constant patrol over Aussie coast, making it harder to bomb by unescorted LBA. My probing attack was unlucky, as 2 of my Betties were shot down.

CHINA - I'm killing many Chinese squads now, those are the happy days. Significant part of enemy army leaving Sian was surrounded and is slowly digested by my divisions. They're even surrendering now and then. I'm not afraid their respawn in Chungking - I think Chinese supply situation is grim already, and more mouths to feed in their capital - all the better. And VP's are VP's still.

GENERAL PLAN - I'm still executing a plan to create a feeling of danger in every theater. Akyab, Koepang, Luganville - and building up Aleutians should confuse Bill and make him split his forces. And after that - Oz. Hope it's a good plan, not too transparent, and not too complicated one.

12 march 1942

INDIAN OCEAN - Ouch! My planes from 4 fleet CV's attacked Colombo, trying to get some ships. Indeed, they got SOME ships in the harbor with their pants down, but - oh! - at so much cost! I've just fallen into flak trap, and 35 (!!!) of my Vals and 15 of my Kates did not come back. My squadrons are reduced to 4 - 5 vals. here's the recapitulation:

Afternoon Air attack on Colombo , at 29,48

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid detected at 111 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 41 minutes

B5N2 Kate: 24 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 8 destroyed by flak
D3A1 Val: 13 damaged
D3A1 Val: 20 destroyed by flak

Allied aircraft losses

SS KXIV, Bomb hits 1
HDML Panji, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
AS Lucia, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAP Sarpen, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAP Haiyang, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Port hits 3
Port fuel hits 1

Did thunderstorms help the allies in shooting my ducks out of the sky? I don't know, my impression is that weather is not functioning at all, or is functioning in a very strange way.The tanker was fuel - laden, so it'll probably sink. or just my wishful thinking. My carriers will return to Singers now to lick their air groups' wounds - and trying to squeeze every good bomber pilot out of Japan.

MEANWHILE, MANY MILES DOWN SOUTH - at the very end of the world, my Teenage Kido found some troop convoy unloading at Suva. Here's the report:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Suva at 132,160

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 143 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 53 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 30
B5N1 Kate x 22
B5N2 Kate x 46
D3A1 Val x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 2 damaged
D3A1 Val: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
xAP Idomeneus, Torpedo hits 4, and is sunk
DD Blue
xAK Steel Navigator, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Benham, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Ellet
AP Zeilin, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AMC Westralia, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
xAK Steel Seafarer, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

Allied ground losses:
2962 casualties reported
Squads: 72 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 75 destroyed, 104 disabled
Engineers: 14 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 34 (29 destroyed, 5 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

As you can see, transported unit was kind of universal - and that's encouraging, because that means many assault points in the sea! Enemy units were also confirmed at Canton Island (won't go there) and Noumea (some AP's - will come after them).

BURMA A base force in enroute to Akyab, and JAAF battalion is being transported via air. 2 turns form now and Akyab will be a major air base, yay! 3 sally units are in Rangoon already, helping the burmese in leaving the country.

CHINA Chihkiang is left empty for me. Another Chinese army leaves - and I don't know where! Chinese are pushed onward north the Sian road.

DEI - Koepang falls!

14th march 1942

CHINA - Chihkiang is taken by auto-occupation. Chinese are retreating westward (mapwise) in order, being bombed by my planes. Since they are in deep woods, thoe strikes do them no real harm. My troops landed at Pakhoi and should take this last Chinese port next turn. Northern campaign is moving smoothly, as more and more planes bombard leaving Chinese every day. 2 weeks from now there should be no Chinese below the Sian line.

BURMA - My garrison in Akyab is roughly set by now. 36 aviation support is present there, and first fighters will fly sweeps this turn to score some kills (hopefully) over Calcutta. My tanks found some marauders from Indian division in the jungle trail - despite the odds my vehicles managed to kill some of the Hindu, not losing a single tank themselves. Infantry is in place now and I'll shock attack tomorrow.

AUSTRALIA - Exmouth invasions lands next turn. No sings of detection, so I'm eager to take the place and build a decent float plane and fighter base there. 12th division is now full unloaded at Darwin, and it will march south to create a deception - I want to make Bill think my thrust is trough land, not by sea.

SOPAC - Teenage Kido found a convoy still unloading at Noumea, sinking one xAP and one xAK, and damaging another xAP. Ships were empty, no troops reported dead. That's enough for now, my carriers will head to Rabaul for some R&R. I had a huge amount of luck this turn, SS Cachalot shot 2 torps at Kaga, but they were duds. You could hear the sound of my relief sigh two blocks away...

16th march 1942

BURMA - I had a convoy unloading 1st base force at Akyab to add so much needed AV support and engineer squads to base OOB. Suddenly, some allied bombers - a mix of blenheims, hudsons and swordfish TB's attacked my ships - there were some zeroes on CAP, downing 2 blenheims and 3 Hudsons, but my 22 point xAP went under, hit by 2 SAP 500lb bombs carried by those pesky stringbags. by the time they've arrived, my CAP was saturated by twin engine bombers. Thankfully, all my troops and supplies are offshore. Fighter cover strengthened! In other news - there seem to be 12 units in Katha! 33 Inf Div with elements of Imperial Guards Division follows the fleeing enemy to the base. My Sallys based at Rangoon drop tons of bombs every day, making the Allied force soft and willing to join the Empire. No enemy CAP from Imphal yet, and after few sweeps Hurricanes were moved out from Chittagong also. B-17 bombers showed themselves up over Akyab, but they were repelled by A6M2 fighters, scoring one zero kill, 3 runway hits and 1 airbase hit only.

SOPAC - heavy cruiser Maya with one DD as an escort tangled with DD Downes and DD Stuart at Noumea. Fight was indecisive, as only one shell hit DD Stuart, no sing of critical damage to the ship. Maya was a part of Baby Kido screen. Carriers themselves moved to Rabaul for some much needed R&R. Garrisions at Shortlands, Efate and Ndeni is reinforced with AV support and engineer squads, to ensure a chain of strongpoints needed for further operations.

AUSTRALIA - Exmouth landings were unopposed. Next turn the construction will start. Amphibious convoys left Darwin with some SNLF troops to claim ex-Dutch islands nearby, rich in natural resources.

CHINA - enemy is fleeing the Sian area, I hope to kill as many Chinese squads as I manage. Subsequent airstrikes on Yenan airport facilities set the Chinese on the run also - base should be mine in a month, given the time to march there!

20th march 1942

BURMA - finally, lots of air activity here. I say finally, because it's always good to know the enemy engages in an area that has limited strategical priority. Such is Burma to me. Anyway, AVG and Brit Hurricane units swept Akyab, finding many Zeroes on CAP. 23 zero fighters downed to 19 allied H81-A3's and Hurris. Not bad, my pools are full with A6M2 model, and only few pilots are dead today, since this was my turf. 8 B-17 got trough, bombing the airstrip fairly well, though. I hope that more pre-bombardment sweeps are difficult for Bill to organize now, and my CAP will stop the heavies. Not many of them, but they will appear soon in Burma. Where's the Tojo when you need one? I'm moving my Nicks to the area, ETA 2 days.

CHINA - my regiment took empty Tuyun. All forces are moving, and destruction of the Chinese is set in motion. My guys pushed the fleeing Chinese back into Yenan, and soon this base will be mine, No more Mao!

JAVA - Bandoeng, an only serious enemy fortress is bombed everyday and I imagine the are getting short in supply. Surabaya is left with only 3 units, my corps - sized force will attack tomorrow.

CARRIERS - Kido Buitai's dive bomber force is rebuilt, and my Val reserves and DB pilots reserves are somewhat empty due to this. But Kido is now again a sword in the hand of the Emperor. Baby Kido rests at Rabaul, waiting for Kaga to achieve readiness.

Thanks. PaxMondo. I have this funny feeling, that my initial developments bring me closer to my ultimate doom. But enough of foul talk! Time for a grand - strategy update! With screenies! Arrows depict my thrusts, lines are my recent achievements or defensive positions. Red circles are.. encirclements - or at least heavy fighting.

BURMA - air situation over recently taken Akyab has stabilized already. Allies tried to overwhelm me with their hurricane gunships, but they achieved net 1:1 loss ratio, which favors me. Additionally, 6 Hudsons (long range ones) were shot down in an attempt to bomb my AMC delivering goods to the base. Well done! My ground forces still approach Katha - main infantry body is only 6 miles from the dot base.

NOTHERN CHINA - now the area is a mix-up of troops going to random directions, killing any Chinese they can find, lacking supplies and overall strategic plan! But I've managed to take Yenan this turn (gooooodbye comrade Mao!), killing a HQ in the process, and leaving two inf units in the open terrain, where they will be bombed to death. Or left to starve, no matter. My army noth of Sian tries to stabilize some kind of front line, but whole area is full of fleeing Chinese.

SOUTHERN CHINA - after chasing approx 80000 Chinese out of the forest, my brave troops approach Kweiyang now, that campaign should end enemy resistance in this area, and complete the HUGE encirclement done by my north and south armies, meeting up in Chungking I hope.

JAVA - Soerabaja is taken, and now my two regiments will cahse down the remnants. Enemy force stays strong in their mountain forts, but they will be starved out to death. Very soon!

AUSTRALIA - Holy sh....! 22 units in alice springs, not good. Well, maybe Bill is mustering an offensive already... But I think otherwise. It's a massive roadblock, intended to stop me if I want to move inland. Good, because I'll come by the sea!

A QUICK ONE - nothing much happening. Remember that AMC which was bravely defended from air bombardment? Well, dutch sub got it with pants down, sinking the ship. It was Awata Maru, not the first class Q-ship in my arsenal, but still 25 VP's. After that, only APD's and fast DD's resupplied the city. Another medium sized convoy is going to deliver engineers, av support and much needed supplies to Akyab. CAP over the base stiffens every turn, as oscars, nicks and zero pilots are in their high 80's now. Even some of the B-17 bombers were shot by nicks, wee!

In other news - I'm recombining divisions, readying them to strike Australia. I should be ready in a month. Meanwhile, significant force is going to land at Koumac in a few days. Escorts are 1 BB, 2 CA's, 2 CL's and several destroyers. Baby Kido will see to the operation, after CV Hiyo joins the group, which should take place in 2 turns.

My economy runs smoothly, net HI rises despite the painful beginning of every month. But I think I've overcharged my naval shipyards, accelerating too many DD's and 2 CL's. Hope everything will get back on track in accumulating points after YAMATO rolls out. 2 months to that!

Oh, and one more thing: my subs sunk one DD (Blue) and one xAK in the Pago-Pago - Fiji region, while heavily damaging AP Wharton (a huge beast!) - I hope it hit the bottom also. Bill reinforces those 2 bases heavily since the beginning of the game. I'll bypass them, and ready myself to withstand counterattacks operating from there

14 th april 1942

BURMA - my forces overrun Katha at last, the Allied retreated toward Mytkina, being chased by my infantry. NW of Katha my tank regiment, a Panzerspitze of sort, run into 2 Brit armour units and reached a stalemate after an unsuccessful attack on those. Enemy pressure on Akyab is over, after losing few B-17 to Nicks, Bill decided to rest his low-morale bomber pilots (last few turns they were running on sight if any CAP was present).

CHINA - this turns to be more difficult than I thought. Bill accumulated 5000 assault at Kweiyang [!!!] and 3000 assault in the mountain hex north of Sian. The latter is not that much of a problem, but a fortified base with 5000 assault is more problematic. Bombings take place every turn, but it may take a while before my forces will gain momentum again and start to chase Chinese across the map, like in the old days.

NEW CALEDONIA - it's my main area of interest now. Landings at Koumac were completely unopposed (barring the KXV sub torpedoing one of supply-laden xAK's), so one of Guards' regiments meant to augment the landing if the opposition would appear to heavy - turned south and landed in empty La Foa, on the outskirts of Noumea. My recon flights didn't see ANYTHING in Noumea, but that would be too beautiful. We'll see some enemy units next turn probably. Or is it Sir Robin fleeing to his farthest castle?

SOUTH PACIFIC - meanwhile my wolfpack (2 oceanic subs + 1 RO) made my day last turn Sinking 1 large xAK and heavily damaging 3 xAK's at Pago - Pago. Cool! My heavy cruisers (Kumano, Haguro and Maya) visited Kandavu island (where Bill built up some ports and airfields recently) and Nadi. One enemy CD unit armed with WWI 155mm guns reported on Kandavu, and CA Kumano is lightly damaged in this mission. Nadi seems to be empty in terms of planes and docked ships, or at least my planes and ship spotters didn't see anything.

INDIAN OCEAN - no unusual movement - Bill builds up the base at Cocos Island. Don't know what his plans are, but to counter them I took Christmas Island [IO] last turn, and my SCTF slammed one little xAK, trying to reach Java.

<edit. Got those 2 islands in the Indian Ocean mixed up, DOH! </edit>

Much is happening in certain areas, while other theatres remain dull and calm.

BURMA - meine Pixeltruppen FINALLY have reached Mytkina and we see the Allies fleeing again. Good, because I need my 4 regiment sized force elsewhere. The enemy flies his B-17 bombers sporadically only, leaving the skies to me. My sallys and bettys are night - bombing various bases in eastern India, but to no immediate success. Akyab is supply-secure now, and I'm concerning some kind of raid in the area to lure the Eye_Of_The_Roosevelt very, very far away from land of OZ.

CHINA - My grand pincer offensive stalls. The nemy holds Kweiyang with 5K assault. I have 3,5K and reinforcements coming. I'm night bombing the strip every night with nells (AVG showed in China for a day!) and bombard with artillery. Soon I'll be able to attack the base. Heavy fighting in the northern mountains, with Chinese fleeing north of Sian and massing west of it (mapwise)

ALEUTIANS - I've recently taken Adak Island. CS Nisshin struck a mine there, but it's in Tokio already, repairing vigorously. next target: Umnak! Bill is building up Kodiak, so he's probably defensive only in the theater.

So Pac update will follow later, as things are already in motion there.

Hi Durbik,

It looks like you are in good shape in China. Once you get Northern China figured out you'll have the Chinese supply situation in dire straits. You'd have to think the Chinese combat effectiveness can only weaken over time as all those units get compressed and fight for what little supply remains. Do you plan any offensive into Western China from Burma? I see you still have a lot of LCU's moving, what kind of reserves do you have yet to deploy?

SqzMyLemon - indeed, a limited offensive from Burma came to my mind some time ago, and I'm now holding Myitkina (left empty) with one regiment planning for first chinese base across the border. I'll add some infantry, artillery and tanks to the mixup - and after few turns to rest my brave troops, I'll go all the way across the hump. About reserves in China - while Quisling Chinese begin to appear in force, some of my combat units are relieved to more war rather than peacekeeping duties. Additionally, I'm buying out Regiments in Kwantung area. It takes a lot, because I find gamey to buy the command and get the low price for it's divisions right after. So men keep pouring in China constantly, but not in great numbers. And yes, my bombardment results tell me, that Bill's Chinese troops are more and more undersupplied.

STORIES OF THE SUB-INFESTED WATERS - Bill is massing his subs in SoPac area. That caused rather unpleasant events recently. First, one of my subs got hammered by DD's near Sydney. Much to my surprise and dismay, my AMC TF (Hokoku and Aikoku Marus) patrolling nearby, looking for Lord Howe Island supply runners, "moved to cover" the crippled sub. DOH! They stranded into Bill's devastator range (Lady Lex's orphans?) and got hammered. One of them could even run from the scene, but it was torpedoed by US sub! Ouch! A day later, 2 torps from S-35 damaged another AMC unloading at Noumea (which is mine... mine!). I ordered it to unload and then disband, but after unloading it was struck again, and that was too much for the AMC. Ouch x2!! Finally, BB Mutsu trying to peacefully bombard that island S of Noumea was struck by 2 21 inch crappy mk 14 torps from crappy S boat. O U C H!!!!!! Thank God Mutsu will be fine, it has only floating damage in significant numbers, no explosions, no nothing.

Baby kido takes revenge - it's Grand Australian Loop has begun near Lord Howe Island, sinkin a troop laden APD, with more to come next day!

Much has happened few last turns, and all of it is brought to you by target - hungry Kido Buitai! I was undertaking 3 major carrier operations simultaneously:

1. covering Cocos Island invasion (3 fleet CV's);

2. a raid along OZ coastline near Geraldton and Perth, investigating heavy traffic reported there by glen subs (2 fleet CV's - Shokaku and Zuikaku);

3. Chasing a troop convoy fleeing Lord Howe Island - aka The Great Australian Loop (3 fleet CV's: Kaga, Hiyo and Junyo + CVL's and faster CVE's).

To depict what actually happened, we must use some combat reports! It all begun with JFB's wet dream near Cocos:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Cocos Islands at 33,101, Range 17,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo
CA Furutaka
CL Natori
DD Kagero
DD Oyashio
DD Hayashio

Allied Ships
xAK Delawarean, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
xAK Floridian, Shell hits 11, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Indianan, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Montanan, Shell hits 12, and is sunk
xAK Oregonian, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Santa Elisa, Shell hits 12, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK Montgomery City, Shell hits 6, and is sunk
xAK Edgar Luckenbach, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
xAK F.J.Luckenbach, Shell hits 11, and is sunk

An unescorted convoy felt the wrath of IJN, suckingmmany lances (haw haw)! It made my day for few minutes. After that Kongo used all it's remaining ammunition to nuke-bomb Cocos Island, uncovering suspiciously high number of coastal guns firing... Unfortunately...

Ground combat at Cocos Islands (33,101)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 1790 troops, 16 guns, 26 vehicles, Assault Value = 92

Defending force 12075 troops, 222 guns, 41 vehicles, Assault Value = 349

Japanese adjusted assault: 0

Allied adjusted defense: 174

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 99 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers

Japanese ground losses:

Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:

- it is obvious that I was proper fu.ked by Bill. Saw SOME build up of that base, but never thought my esteemed opponent would invest so much effort in defending it. All Dutch BF's were transported there, some Brit commando units, even some Aussie Engineers! 2nd recon regiment is my first unit to be destroyed by the enemy. I bought it out of course. Kido sunk TK Buccinum fleeing the area, but no more targets arose. My carriers bombed the port afterwards, sinking many auxiliaries, but losing several vals. Flak is heavy over that base. I hope the starve to death! I'm going to watch it happening with satisfaction. Day after that more of my troops unloaded on this dreaded island (2 day turns, no chance to stop them). They died. I've evacuated their fragment to rebuild them in Surabaja.

Meanwhile, at the Birdcave... I mean, OZ coast!

Baby Kido catches up with Lord Howe losers, wrecking havoc:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Sydney at 90,167

Allied ground losses:
331 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 8 destroyed, 17 disabled
Engineers: 20 destroyed, 34 disabled

... all troop carrying vessels are down. Clearly it was an engineer unit, which is even better to destroy than regular grunts. Baby Kido countinued the loop, but no more targets found - they're now returning to Noumea for refueling. The enemy retaliated only with 6 B-17 and 5 hudsons naval bombing, but they were easily scattered by 42 zero CAP.

Next day my raiding force approached Perth. They have stumbled on ASW TF first:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Perth at 46,147

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 17 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 7

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 1

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
AM Colac, Bomb hits 3, and is sunk
AM Latrobe
AM Jan van Amstel, Bomb hits 3, and is sunk

I thought then: "sheesh, what a crappy raid. But where the hell did that Wildcat came from? Maybe land based orphan..." - but later that night my sub attacked a surface group:

ASW attack near Perth at 49,147

Japanese Ships
SS I-32, hits 6, heavy damage

Allied Ships
BB Warspite
CA Minneapolis
CA New Orleans
CA Louisville
CL Nashville
DD Grayson

Sub made it, but I thought: "wohooo! A worthy prey at last!" - and there it appeared to be more than I thought! Eagles of the Empire found this to their delight!

Morning Air attack on TF, near Perth at 49,146

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid detected at 148 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 55 minutes

DD Hammann, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CV Hornet, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
CA Vincennes

BANZAI! BANZAI! BONSAI!!!! The Hornet won't sting anyone again! Other enemy carrier escaped, but another strike is ordered tommorow!

Enemy retaliation was pathetic and failed:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Perth at 45,146

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 93 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 37 minutes

SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak
TBD-1 Devastator: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
TBD-1 Devastator: 3 destroyed by flak

Bill did the same thing to me on Cocos island. Our game ended before I could pursue finishing the place off but I was shocked at what I found there. He wound up destroying the regiment I had landed there.

It became a focal point for a couple of months where he was trying to supply it and I was blockading it.

IT'S A HOT SEASON IN AUSTRALIA - now for the quick recapitulation of last 3 turns in Australian front (which is the most active one lately). Not all things went according to Japanese plan :( ...

1. I was the one to report to the Emperor, that we've lost Zuikaku. After Hornet sinking, I planned carefully, that my CV's would sail in a patrol zone 6 hexes minimum outside Perth, to prevent facing LBA and planes from Yorktown combined. I set react range to 0 and so on. But I forgot, that Jap commanders are eager to engage carriers even when they are strictly commanded otherwise. And I knew that. Result - few bombs hit, and fragile bamboo carrier had to be scuttled by DD Ushio after suffering magazine explosion. BB Kirishima was moderatley damaged in he same fight, not mentioning light damage on Shokaku :( :( :(

2. Well, it didn't went THAT bad - Eagles of the Empire sunk BB Warspite, and heavily damaged CV Yorktown (!) - the carrier was struck by 2 250 kg and 2 500 kg bombs, and left in ON FIRE, HEAVY DAMAGE state. It probably limped back to Perth, but it's marooned there for few days. And that brings us a chance to kill it there, because...

3. OPERATION ENCHANTED KATANA IS ON THE RUN! Amphibious TF's are 3-4 days from both Australian coasts:

- western part - covered by 3 CV's: 3 infantry divisions, 2 infantry regiments, 2 ind. eng. regiments, 6 arty units, 1 army and some av support. No tanks. Western invasion is going to land at Geraldton, and rush to Perth. After taking (hopefully) the base, bulk of the forces will be taken elsewhere.

- eastern part, covered by baby Kido: in the spearhead - 2 inf divisions, 1 armor division, 2 regiments and 1 army. In the follow up: 3 inf divisions, 1 regiment, 2 eng regiments, 3 tank regiments, 2 recon regiments, numerous arty units and engineer units. Plan is to land at Cairns, and deploy a Panzerspitze down the continent, eventually taking all that VP rich environment. There's a TF dispatched for Cooktown, too. Banzai!
