Finally assembling the Combined Fleet again after performing repairs and upgrades on most ship classes.
The Taiho takes lead of Car Div 1 and leads the Shokaku and Zuikaku. Ideally I would have liked to organize the carriers in Divisions of no more than 3 carriers but
this requires a lot of escorts and reduces our surface combat strength. 3-4 CVs + 1 CVL will most likely become the standard composition.

By the end of the year the Kido Butai will then field 4 Car Divs:

2 Taiho + Akagi + CVL (+11 escorts: 1 BB, 2 CA, 1 CL, 7 DD)
2 Shokaku + 2 Soryu (+11 escorts: 1 BB, 2 CA, 1 CL, 8 DD)
3 Katsuragi + 2 CVL (+10 escorts: 1 BB, 2 CA, 1 CL, 6 DD)
1 Junyo + 5 CVE (or deteached slower CVLs)(+escorts: 1 BB, 1 CA, 1 CL, 5-8 DD)

In total such an escort force will draw upon all 4 Kongo class fast battleships, 7 heavy and 4 light cruisers as well as 26-29 destroyers.
That's over 40 warships.

I will organize the heavy battleships in the Battleship Group: Yamato, Musashi and Nagato and Mutsu as well as 2 CAs, 1 CL and 8 destroyers.
A heavy cruiser group under Tanaka: 4 CA, 1 CL and 7 destroyers

The new Shimakaze class destroyers will be organized in 2 DESRONS with 2 CLs.

Can anyone tell me if there's an advantage to attaching ships to different Navy HQs?
In Soerabaja we have the South Seas Fleet while the Combined Fleet HQ is at Truk.

A look at the industry chart:

Looks fairly ok!
I've now installed a 64 bit Win7 client and have to boot from my old WinXP drive to access Tracker (32 bit).
Need to reinstall it on the new OS but not quite sure how to proceed if I want to take with me the old history!

Just install 32-bit Java and the 32-bit C++ library (vcredist). Ask the Tracker boys about it. It works fine for me on Vista 64.

You're right, not bad economy at all.  Particularly given your militry situation.  DEI still intact  You still hold Burma.  Allied offensive just starting ... almost one year later than history.  Looks really good actually.

Yes, you should fight for Northen Oz, cause having there strongholds is best way to prevent attacks (both bombing your resources and invasions) on SRA. You have naval superiority and KB intact so you could give Andy a real headache.

But, since im not familiar with Allied Edition, perhaps northen OZ is not that important as it was in normal game.

Btw, whats your plans with War in the East?

Allies actually lose ASW bonus in 1944, I wonder if this counterbalance better DC.

Really? Where did you get this info? Was it from a developer?

Nice, orderly, organization, but what is purpose of such composition? BBs will draw enemy planes, there are, like 2 CAs with slightly more FPs, but the rest? IIRC there is now possibility for some Japan CLs to convert into CLAAs.
Also, what with "Night Fighting Force"? Have you "upgraded" already those CLs with ridiculous number of torpedo tubes (like 2*12)? Put under Tanaka everything, which have many torpedo tubes. At night, and in bad weather, that should defeat anything, even pure super-duper-modern BB force.

Thx Mynok, will look into it!

Hi Kresimir, good to see you in here again!
Yes, true as you say; but what would happen if Combined Fleet got pulled into major fleet action in the Cent Pac just as Allies launched a major land offensive towards Darwin?
With Daily Waters and numerous other bases in Allied hands Darwin would get shut down and reinforcements-evacuations would be endangered and we would risk loosing the entire Northern Oz Army.
Not an easy one this, but as I said, the dice is cast!

The fleet composition is the first step in organizing the Combined Fleet into divisions and squadrons.
Need to find out exactly which ships I have, which ones I will sent to the Far East and which ones to be used in AA and ASW roles etc.
I am of course very flexible with how these groups of ships can be reorganized but the idea is that most sea battles will see the carrier as the main fleet assets.
So by organizing into Car Divs we will go into combat well organized in balanced fleets. As soon as the carrier battle is over we can easily combine 1+1 Car Divs and "create" 2 new powerful surface combat fleets.
- If you look at the escort composition <1 BB, 2 CA, 1 CL, 7 DD> this is a very well balanced force, just need a good commander and the surface fleet is ready for action.

The supporting surface combat TFs thus need to be commanded by the best naval combat commanders like Tanaka.

One of the Kitakami "torpedo cruisers" have been sunk, the Kitakami itself is being upgraded to a CLAA (50 days to completion) - it will join one of the Car Divs when completed.
The Shimakaze class destroyers is the basis for our torpedo squadrons now, either in formations of 6 + 1 CL or alternatively as 10 + 2 CLs or 4 CA, 2 CL and 6 DDs.

I would probably go with KB-old and KB-new. 5 CVs and a CVL in each along with 2 Kongo plus more DDs in each. Stationed each in Babeldoab and Marshalls area able to respond to any kind of threat with some force.

Hi 5th Guards and welcome to the thread

It's certainly many possible ways to put together the KB but remember that a TF will have max FLAK in a 15 ship TF.
Flak on additional ships isn't counted. This means you want to have 15 ships in each Car Div. Breaking the KB into smaller units would require more escorts and
more political points spent on appointing Air Fleet Admirals. I consider between 3-5 carriers including 1-2 CVLs to be ideal in 43-44

Hm well, splitting in two has both its advantage and disadvantage; You can react to threats but if you're up against the combined Allied carrier fleets half the KB won't be a match.

Enemy 4Es hit Darwin today; no opposition.
I evacuated Katherine as enemy troops moved in, don't want them to defeat a smaller unit and pursue it straight into Darwin.
- Do have a plan for Darwin and another week to prepare is required.

Enemy commando para's also landed at Corunna Downs; our garrison defeated the attackers.
I'm going to airlift in some reinforcements to ensure that an eventual follow up drop also fails.
- I want to force Andy to expend resources to take these bases and nothing would be better than if he has to send ships.

A quick look at the inventory reveals the following about the surface fleet. There are:
9 battleships: 2 x Yamato, 2 Nagato, 4 Kongo and Ise.
10 heavy cruisers - lost a few too many for my liking
17 light cruisers including the Katori (this somehow makes up for the CA shortage)
105 destroyers - out of these 25 are older types now used as escorts

In the Line Islands we have 3 light cruisers and 11 destroyers.
The SRA Fleet has 1 BB (Ise), 3 CA, 2 CL and 15 destroyers.

This leaves ca 54 destroyers (minus 5-10 always refitting or in different state of repairs) ready for action with the KB and Combined Fleet.
- Not a lot to face the storm with but we do receive quite a few new destroyers and another 4 CLs.

A few interesting events today;

Our combined attack on Horn Island; Army bombers from 2 large fields tried to coordinate an attack
but ALL bomber units came in dribs and drabs. Need to look at how to organize this better. All bombers were Helen IIs and
most escorts were Oscar IIbs set at the same altitude. Still Zero's at other bases and at other altitude settings also followed the bombers in.

In Darwin the 4Es came in again; this time 2x20 Thunderbolt from the little island 9 hexes away also came sweeping in.
Defending Darwin with fighters would therefore have been futile and the defenders would have become trapped when the fields were closed.

Katherine was captured by the Allies, a huge armored force took the place and met no resistance.
Let's see if the come rushing into Darwin!

The last charge by the paras at Corunna Downs also failed.

Can anyone tell me if there's an advantage to attaching ships to different Navy HQs?
In Soerabaja we have the South Seas Fleet while the Combined Fleet HQ is at Truk.

Naval HQ's are cosmetic. Or organizational helpers. No game effect.

Assumed as much, thx!

Enemy bombers hit Merauke and Buna today.
No doubt Merauke is high up on Andy's target list.

Over Buna we had 6 Nicks on CAP and they claimed almost 10 enemy bombers. Talk about B-25 kilelrs.
- The enemy's P38 sweepers first showed up when the fighting was over and got some revenge by shooting down 2 Nicks.

Enemy troops today entered Fenton in strength; our rear-guard will again fall back just in time.
It will then take the armor another 2 turns to enter Darwin, lanching an attack in 3.

We're quickly running out of July...In August the Frances goes into production.
Not so sure it's an improvement over the Betty and Nells; it got a relatively high service rating (3).
- Got armor though, so I guess I will start a production line and convert some squadrons.

Port Hedland will be 7 hexes from Exmouth vs 10 from Carnarvon. Thus, he will be able to use more of his 2e bombers. In addition, he will soon be able to get into SRA area quicker. Your days in northern Australia seem to be numbered.

Naval HQ's help with ship repair IIRC. And don't they also (in game code) spread around any naval support squads they have to nearby bases? Check your naval support numbers at bases near Naval HQ's and see if you can make them add up using only the naval support at the base - I bet the totals are off because they get credit for the nearby naval HQ.

I had thought that naval HQ's simply added naval support to the base they are in. I was not aware of any units with the ability to spread out support squads to separate bases automatically.

Q's question and my reply were in reference to assigning TFs to a naval HQ. Not about actual on-map naval HQ units. Just to clarify! In retrospect I see how my wording wasn't very precise.

AFAIK this is true! Assigning TF's (or ships?) was put in strictly to help players manage things, if they found it helpful.

Yes, I've decided not to decide Northern Oz in force - just with the forces necessary to delay the Allied advance.
All my efforts are going into fortyfing the SRA now and the defenses are becoming quite formidable.
- Allied troops didn't move out of Fenton today. Supply issues?

I'm preparing to pound Allied troops that move into Darwin; maybe our garrison can hang on for some time.

Not much else to report from the last turn; the Frances is now in production and I'm going for 40-50 ac per month.
What's your experience with the early Frances?

The armor does help. The relatively high SR hardly matters. The range hurts and helps. The Nell is such a great 2E patrol with its long range. The Betty just lights up, even escorted for me. The Frances range is matched for Zero escort (good), but I've never been able to get enough of them in range of an allied fleet to make a difference.

IJN LB is for attacking fleets, neh? Sending 90 Frances+escort against the allied CV's in mid-43 is just suicide, you would need +400 to get through. Besides building the a/c (at 50/month, about 1 years worth, so now you are into '44), the issue is where/how to base and support so many? You have few opportunities to do so.

So, yeah I've used them and they are ok. I just haven't been able to use them effectively to date. Hoping that you will be able to show me what I'm doing wrong!

Hm, the Frances with its unreliable Nakajima Homare engines need to be operated from large well supplied and serviced bases.
They should therefore be usefully if deployed with heavy fighter support in set-piece battles.
- I will equip some training units behind the lines with the Frances and see if I can find a use for them.

The Frances could have been used in many roles, just like the Ju-88.
Here's a very interesting tale: Franes on one way suicide mission against Ulithi hits carrier

A slightly interesting turn!

I finally managed to persuade 2 AMC's to return to the Frigate Shoals to deal with the enemy transports there.
- No idea what Andy is doing there.

As mentioned before, the AMCs lack aggressiveness despite being allocated aggrssive captains.
The Bangkok Maru was useless but the larger Gokoku Maru shot up all of the enemy transports.

3 subs continously failed at hitting the DMS's there.
- I thrive at opportunities to inflict numerous small hit and runs on the enemy.
Add em all up and they'll be worth a major battle by the end of the war.

In Oz enemy fighters swept Buna, PM and Darwin - empty air.
In return our medium bombers hit enemy armor near Darwin.
Low naval attack Helen's also attacked enemy shipping of Exmouth but dissappointed.

I also noticed how Andy bypassed Katherine without placing a garrison there!
So I dropped some para's and promptly recaptured the place, cutting of the enemy armor heading for Darwin.
That will cause some annoyance.

I finally managed to persuade 2 AMC's to return to the Frigate Shoals to deal with the enemy transports there.
- No idea what Andy is doing there.

He probably has enough SeaBees to throw 2 or 3 here plus a BF to use to build up the base as a steady stepping stone to get him to Midway. He can use those dot bases to get him close enough for LRCAP.

I would recommend bombing the armor that you have cut off from supplies. That way you might be able to slow their return to katherine down to a crawl. More turns without supply = good for you. An d you might trash some decent armor units + Darwin holds out longer = win win win!

Yes hit the cut off troops as hard as possible but watch out for LRCAP you will destroy some units and you will push them out of movement mode to combat mode which will slow them down.

Had a 1500 AV Armor blob moving to Wyndham a few weeks ago and my opponent just did low attacks with some fighters and pushed some of the units to combat mode. This lead to a split up of my army and i got a little careless and moved only a part to Wyndham as i wanted to race there as fast as possible. Almost did cost me 10 units as the enemy had 1500 AV there and hit my armored spearhead with a lot of naval bombardment. Barely was able to leave with my units to regroup them with the ones stuck in combat mode.

In addition it is quite funny as last turn in my PBEM which i did yesterday in the evening my units are leaving Katherine, and i set a bde to stay to to avoid exact a possible nasty paradrop by my opponent. I had to laugh when i saw that you did it.

Well, Frigate Shoals are out of fighter range to Midway...probably 16-18 hexes.
So not quite sure but it might be surplus material

I have ordered an all out bombing run against the 11 units in Darwin. Another 3-4 larger units are still outside the town.
Not sure if we can stall em, I've only left partial units with low prep and supplies as a rearguard. 200+ AV and 4 forts.
- It's only if the enemy armor is low on supply and disrupted we can hope to stall them for some time. Not convinced at all about how well inf units stand against armor in clear terrain. Would have been better to have placed the 4 Jap tank divisions in Darwin, that would have surprised Montgomery

Hehe, yeah I sent recons to Katherine and was surprised to see that Andy left it wide open.
Fenton is also open but I won't divide the para unit between multiple targets. Fying in parts of another unit for that job.

Actually, large parts of the KB is now hovering undetected near Timor.
I've been unsure whether to let them strike the enemy armor - this will most likely stop them dead in their tracks, but would it be worth
revealing the KB's position? Andy may kick of another invasion run against the Line Islands.

It will be another week before the last KB carrier completes her upgrades, 2 weeks until 2 CVLs complete their conversion a month until the first 2 Katsuragi's arrive.
These are such substantial reinforcements that I don't wish to sail the KB into combat before they arrive.

Also; I can't remember whether it is effective or possible to bombard enemy troops in a friendly hex like Darwin?
Do I have to wait until it's captured by the enemy before bombarding?

Next turn I've ordered a BB and 2 CA's to hit the island north of Mornington again to suppress the T-bolts there.

I'm 90% sure it works fine. I would have said 100%, but then just your mentioning it made me think, and I cannot recall exactly the last time it did it....

No, not KB... or what significant but a few days delays would you expect to come from that?  I would rather move it eastward in secrecy -- just in case as you indicate that Andy tries a simultaneous operation in OZ and CENTPAC.  Andy surely will have something in stock to force you to split your units.  How are things in the Indian Ocean?  Or Kuriles?  Silent?
