Status: offline 		Hey guys.

I recently started up a new game and I bought some info on an independent colony from some pirates. It was the same race as me, Human, but quite distant. At some point the AI suggested that I send a colony ship and I decided to agree, seeing as it's almost as developed as my home world and should be able to defend itself well enough. The colony ship got there and was destroyed by a load of pirates in the system which seem to be fighting over it or something .

I decided to leave it till later, but I noticed the AI had sent a frigate to refuel at the independent colony for some reason. It managed to destroy the pirates, mostly escorts. The AI then sent a destroyer there to refuel. It got destroyed by a newly arrived batch of pirates. Now I can't stop it trying to send frigates there to be destroyed. This is quite annoying seeing as I didn't actually colonise it and it's 5 or so sectors away.

Any way to stop this?

Status: offline 		hmm, you could eliminate the pirate base for one, this will solve the problem for good
since they are so present there this indicates that the base is very near, probably in the same system
or you could buy them off and this way they will protect the colony once it becomes yours....this has other benefits as well

or you could create a refueling point (a gas mining station for example) somewhere so that the ships go there instead of going to that colony

Status: offline 		AI can be annoying when controlling your ships. I usually lose about five escorts to some big group of kaltors or pirates before AI undestands to leave them be. AI should stop sending ship eventually, but it can take some time.

I don't try to be rude here, but try turning off all automation affecting ships. Designs you may keep automated but the best way to control your ships is to control all of them manually. It may sound annoying and hard but it pays to have your ships on thight leash. Having couple of manually controlled fleets is much better than having tons of ships running under AI control. I only have escorts automated; I use them as patrolling cutters/interceptors in my empire. All bigger ships are usually under my control.

The independent colony started an empire and the AI is keeping a destroyer there which is holding off attacks, which works pretty well for me, I'd rather have this independent grow and have a strong ally.

Status: offline 		Cheese, a tip for you.  Pirates will tell you of an independent colony, and its a trick, they guard the colony.  So, if they do give you this info, send a fleet of military ships while that colonyship is being built 

Or buy protection, I find it best to always kill the pirates first, and only if you are about to lose something (like a colony ship) open up the diplo window and pay them protection.

Another trick they play on you is to offer to sell you a map of an unexplored system. You buy it and find out its just a gas cloud, or a star with no planets. Don't trust 'em

Status: offline 		i still prefer to deal with them even when they sell me false info...an explored gas cloud is one less place for my explorers to go to; knowing how explorers operate it can be a plus

Status: offline 		Pirates are never worth the trouble, one day you get caught working with them and your rep nosedives faster than you can say "what mass driver? I only dropped troops down there". I only pay off pirates for the first 6 months if im unlucky enough to have some near me right at the beginning, once my economy can support at least 15-20 escorts and replace them quickly when lost i ignore everything from pirates and deal only in gun diplomacy.

As to above about controlling ships, I also only have escorts on auto, every other military ship is in a fleet of some kind and controlled manually. Not only does it save stress but also a fortune in replacements for them charging in on their own to an ambush.

Status: offline 		wow, my turn to say I didn't know that dealing with pirates can lower your rep....good thing you can get it higher by killing them
sort of uses them and dispose of them policy...if the rep gain is higher than the rep loss in this scenario it could still be worth to use them
there are certainly interesting options in using them to covertly attack someone

Status: offline 		I thought it only affected your rep if you were paying them to attack another empire and you were caught?

I usually try and buy colony locations whenever they're available, clear the pirates with my first fleet early on and colonize it before someone else does. 5,000 extra for an already populated planet, plus possible race bonuses, plus growing your own empire at the potential expense of another... it seems more than worth it. Hell it almost feels like cheating TBH.

Once any given pirate faction runs out of colony locations to sell me they are terminated.

Status: offline 		You don't lose Rep from buying info, only for paying them to attack another Empire or for having an Aliiance with them.

Also, has anyone else seen it when you get a message saying that our spies/listening post or something has intercepted information that Empire A is paying pirates to attack Empire B.  Shall we expose Empire A, this will hurt our relations with them but lower their rep, or something along those lines

Is it normal that there's a race about one or two years in that has Super Beam weapons? I can't even find that on the tech tree.

Status: offline 		when you'll find it would you like the AI asking you how come you have it?
explore, explore, explore and boldly go.....there is huuge number of goodies that exploration alone can reveal in this game. I might even try on a later game to ignore reasearching and I still feel I could do well enough with just exploration
