BTW, Intel will, predicted by them, loose 700 $ million us 1000 $ million... they found a error in hardware on "Sandy Bridge" new chipsets... they have to recall 8 million already made chipsets... engineering error during design... one transistor was wrongly designed and after prolonged use it would die (the 3 GB SATA ports are affected)...

I would like to know what happened.

Apparently one chip design engineer designed that transistor work with too high voltage (and told noone - it was not supposed to happen)... over time transistor would die and so wotld SATA port...

quote:

Yesterday Intel announced the largest stop shipment/recall I can remember it ever making (excluding FDIV). The product in question? All 6-series chipsets, a necessary part of any Sandy Bridge (aka 2nd generation Intel Core microprocessor, aka Intel Core i7/i5/i3 2xxx) system. The problem? A transistor with a thin gate oxide being driven by too high of a voltage. The aforementioned transistor is present in the clock tree circuitry of the 3Gbps SATA ports that branch off of all 6-series chipsets. The 6Gbps ports are unaffected. Over a period of 3 years, at least 5% of all these chipsets will have some failure on the 3Gbps SATA ports. The failure could start in the form of errors on the SATA link and ultimately result in an unusable SATA port. No damage to attached hardware should result.

Leo "Apollo11"

Wow. That is a systems failure of major proportions. I wonder how Intel's testing regime missed that. And I also wonder how many heads will roll for letting that happen !

Nik, it sounds like she is being very open with you and including you.  I seems that you are likely on good ground with her.  I'm sure she has the bigger problem of figuring out how to deal with this guy.  It's even harder that he is her manager.

Well in this day and age the company has a potential issue on their hands. Whenever you have a manager who put themselves in this sort of situation all parties need to proceed very carefully.

Well, that is an odd morning.

Did you guys have any hints about the layoffs ?

Nope. S.O.P.

Is the guy who is madly in love with her senior to her ? Does he bother her ? Do we need to help you take him out ?

Senior, yes.....a manager. Bother?.....the situation bothers her now that she realizes that he wasn't just being nice because they are "friends". She said she had no clue it was anything more.

well he bought her lunch yesterday.....and GFU later admitted that he probably doesn't do that for all his staff on a regular basis. I'm considering sending in the Dobbie and the Pitbull on a hit and fade mission. The Lab can watch out for coppers.

Other than that....all i can do is sit and watch where the cards fall.

Send the Dumb-bull to eat a few of his appliances as a warning first...

Did you see the movie Into the Night? Jeff Goldblum's character was an electrical engineer who suffered from insomnia for months. His work suffered too, as several months after a standards change on a project he had missed the change...

A fine movie, primarily because you see so much of Michelle Pfeiffer

well.....life is full of little lessons like this i suppose......

Yesterday was a lucky day....mostly. Normally on Tues i go straight from hell (otherwise known as "work") to my local pub for Hawaiian Tshirt day. Embarrasing oneself in such a manner scores you a free beer....so with book and magic spear, this is where i head to decompress. Yesterday however i decided to stop home first to let the Dobbie out given he'd recently demolished an entire rawhide bone and such an event often leads to dire gastric consequences.

On entry into home's back entrance (wash room) i immediately was assailed by a pungent, heavy smell.......not suprising, given we currently house 3 dogs and one stupid cat. On entry into house proper i was nearly bowled over by an even more concentrated blast of this odor......and quickly realized it wasn't a pet accident.....it was gas. With a headache already forming between my pointy temples, i evac'd the dogs immediately including kenneled Dobbie and ran outside. A minute of thought on possible courses of action yeilded only one smart move....had to call 911 and report a possible gas leak. Fortunately the fire dept is just down the street. I was told under no circumstances to re-enter the home.

Being stupid......i of course did.....to rescue the equally stupid cat whom i'd left in there in the rush to get the barking dogs out of the back door. I'm not afraid to admit to harboring melodramatic thoughts during this escapade as i had visions of sudden firely death from having watched too much NCIS. Grabbing scruffy stupid cat by the neck i ran outside and threw them all into the garage as the fire truck rolled up.

Long story short....good news was it wasn't a combustible gas leak but there were heavy concentrations of CO (Carbon Monoxide) in the air....enough to set off our Cabon Monoxide alarm. Fire dept concluded based on their tests that it was the stove. Had i not come home when i did, GFU might have come home to 4 dead animals as she was spending several hours after her workday at the barn. Amazingly, none of the animals seemed worse for wear despite the windows all having been closed.

Hero of the day right? wrong. I called the landlord, who is her dad and he later came over to check things out. His conclusion was that the fireplace was the culprit not the stove and proceeded to turn it back on and gave GFU a long lecture on keeping appliances clean. This put her in a foul mood and me in the doghouse when i came home from having calmed my nerves with a beer or two.....or three.

The addage is indeed true. No good deed goes unpunished.

This guy showed up in the backyard, not as big as the other one (i think his father) that we saw some years ago (and got captured). This one is about 4' long (Dad was about 5' long, and the dad rivaled the size of a small cougar):

Nice kitty

But it will eat your pets!

A couple of years ago a friend and I were on a bike ride when a rabbit darted across the rail trail we were on. Half a second later came a bobcat (much smaller than this one) in hot pursuit. They disappeared into the underbrush so I have no idea if he managed to catch his dinner that day.

In all honesty, not often. I think my last one was a couple of years ago. But a new HD means a new install.

it can be beneficial to do a clean install every so often.....to avoid what's quaintly called "Windows Rot"

One can also use Registry cleaners but it's a hit or miss affair.

Yeah, no kidding.

Weren't you thinking when you selflessly acted to save those animals? I mean, the embarassment on your GF father's handyman skills. You should have been a good BF and asyphxiated without complaining about it.

And don't think being a hero and immolating yourself in a gas fire is going to help. She'll just bitch about the nasty smell from your singed hair.

Can you tell I've been married 15 years in June?

Given the chance, it might try... we generally are on the lookout for menaces like this before letting the dogs out... so far the big predators have steered clear of the fenced in yard...

Well....honestly, i imagined coming home, if not to a hero's welcome to at least a very appreciative audience (from the dad and the GF). Wasn't expecting to get blasted with laser beams and a relayed rant about how we are slobs and don't take care of things.

I've read too many hero books. The real world just doesn't work that way. Also was annoyed that the "handyman" thinks he not only knows better than us. (already established) but now this includes the local Fire Dept.

Well, they started rolling blackouts across the state, supposedly 15 minutes at a time. Except they forgot to turn ours on, and i couldn't get through to the power company for ~4 hours... it got pretty chilly in here. The power is finally on (very shortly after reaching the power company).

Still....i'll admit to smiling hugely when i found the Trojan on GF's macbook. "Oh but Mac's are IMMUNE to viruses!"
GF still doesn't quite believe me when i tell her that since switching to Intel architecture...."Mac's" are in effect, "PC's" only with a different O/S. My only beef with them is that they are overpriced for what you get yet everyone thinks Bill gates is evil while Steve Jobs is the king of Cool. He must be a genius to have pulled that one off.

Well, the only product from the fruit company I have is my phone, and I have (knock on wood) had none of the problems that were trumpeted so loudly at the beginning.

I've dropped it on the floor five times so far, and it's developed no malfunctions, the glass hasn't been scratched, the battery hasn't exploded...

Got both of you beat. I don't own an Apple product, probably won't for the forseeable future. I do, however, own some of their stock for the last 1.5 years.

That's the smart money-banking on their cache and PR product spin cycle.

Would have been nice of them to remember a bit sooner. Was wondering why the power went off earlier this morning. Now I know.
