This guy gets FULL HONORS:

Lone Nepali Soldier Defends Potential Rape Victim Against 40 Men

quote:

A 35 year-old Gurkha soldier named Bishnu Shrestha was riding a train when he suddenly found himself in the middle of a massive robbery. 40 men armed with knives, swords and guns stormed the train and began robbing the passengers.

Bishnu kept his peace while the gang snatched cell phones, jewelry and cash from other riders. But then, the thugs grabbed the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him and forcefully stripped her naked. Before the bandits could rape the poor girl in front of her helpless parents, Bishnu decided he had enough.

That is one tough dude !

BTW, I made the mistake of scrolling down and reading some of the user comments on that article. Good Thread, people are idiots.

Yes, very many seem to be. Sometimes I despair.

Well, they started rolling blackouts across the state, supposedly 15 minutes at a time. Except they forgot to turn ours on, and i couldn't get through to the power company for ~4 hours... it got pretty chilly in here. The power is finally on (very shortly after reaching the power company).

Read about that in a work email. We use several server systems based in Austin for daily build activities. They are all currently shut down to prevent damage when a blackout hits.

Two of our clients have offices in Sugar Land which were not open. Then again, their offices in DC and Chicago wernt open either.

Are the blackouts because ice is taking down some of the power lines ?

The blackouts were because 3 power plants went down - (again, the reasons for this are not clear)... there was insufficient capacity to supply everyone, so - rolling blackouts.

They stopped them yesterday afternoon. Presumably the power plants are back up and running.

i've also experienced this is Washington DC around 2002 or 2003 when there was a cold spell. Rolling "blackouts" of gas supply as well as electricity. That was because they had blocked all power plant development and transmission tower construction, then the Potomac froze and they couldn't get coal barges to a critical power plant - as well as vastly increased demand for power when it got really cold.

There isn't the transmission tower problem here, but apparently there is a critical balance of power generation capacity (3 plants is enough to crash the system, i guess.)

Hi all,

How are thread brothers "Over the Big Pond" holding on?

Is this severe winter weather seriously affecting you (my aunt and cousins are all in the South)?

Well, Leo, it was 70 degrees here yesterday.

It is colder today, and will only be in the 40's, but no bad weather for us. It's all staying west and north of us.

Leo "Apollo11"

Good morning, Leo.

The real unfortunates of these winter storms this year are the folks in the midwest-midatlantic states. They've really been walloped with snow in Chicago, DC, Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia, moreso than usual.

Here, it's cold and we've had a bit more snow than usual (particularly for December). We're a bit more accustomed to it than some of our East Coast bretheren though. No sign of the CHUDs yet here, but I'm still keeping my rock salt loads chambered.

Rolling blackouts ???

I guess I'm about to give offense, but are you sure you aren't in a third world country?

We had them in LA too. I think both CA and TX have bigger economies than Sweden.

Sure they do. I still have never experienced that. I actually had to google it to see if it meant the same thing I thought it did.

Well, its a big deal in the news recently so it wont really be a political thing, but there was a recent engineering survey released which came down really hard on pretty much every aspect of American infrastructure (from roads and bridges through utility lines and sewers).

My first reaction to NY was, why bother repairing it? The way it looks, I'd level the place and start from scratch.

Give me a break.

Someone who thinks our roads poor on balance has never been across the border into Mexico, anywhere in central Asia, South or Central America or Africa. For the staggering miles of paved roadway in this country, we do pretty darn well. If by infrastructure, you also include electrical generation, oil refineries, seaports, rail, mail and parcel delivery again we're fine.

Yeah, we've some bridges that need attention (COUGH) Minneapolis bridge Collapse (COUGH) and some sewers and water treatment facilities that are in dire need of upgrading. We ain't third world and we don't need to adopt a scorched earth policy in our (misplaced) envy of others overstated societal improvements, Comrade Red Mouse.

I'm not structural engineer. In fact, I wasnt even trying to have an argument. I just thought that it was a valid thing to point out to Per.

Point taken, and sorry if I pissed you off Andre. I know from personal experience that your infrastructure is good. That's why I got so surprised about that rolling blackout.

No, not you, Per. My comments were somewhat pissy and cranky and were directed at Comrade Red Mouse. No worries.

Heh, "Windows Rot" aka "Planned Obsolesence"...

Honestly i don't see any real difference between Win7 and OS-X. Both have their quirks. For OS-X, my favorite is the Pinwheel of death....or as i've begun calling it...."The girl with Kalidoscope eyes"

And to hear Apple Fanbois talk, it has no problems whatSOever... I'm so confused now...

He claims a lot more problems than I've ever had. Seems like the difference there might be the user......

Havent had any issue either. In fact, when I completely bungled a Bootcamp install, the recovery was not only quick and painless but I also lost absolutely no data.

On the other hand, I received my new PC at work. Its a Core Duo 4gRAM Windows 7 machine. While I've had 7 on my Bootcamp install, I've never really done anything with it aside from launching games. In a work environment it will take some getting used to. But it does have a few very nice features.

Just lucky i guess. Have had a couple major issues and several minor problems with apple machines in our stable of 7+ computers.....

The big ones were:

1) failed install on 17inch Macbook of purchased OS-X (the orig install was erased). This was my first taste of "apple-itus" in that the O/S came with a two dozen+ page manual........but i soon discovered that the "technical" aspect only took up one page....the rest was spiel on how great OS-X was. The technical section contained only two instructions: Insert disk......press install!

yeah........ well maybe in Steve Jobs world it all works that well....so well that users need not bother with technobabble of any kind. Ended up getting the puppy installed after an hour+ research on the net. Turns out Leopard didn't like the hard drive for some reason.

2) Bootcamp Blues: My 2nd attempt to utilize BC ended up corrupting the entire disk on GFU's Imac.......that did not make her happy. Fortunately i was able to recover all her files before wiping the drive and doing a full reinstall. She has to this day forbidden even the hint of using BC again on her main machine.

Minor annoyances have included the Netgear issue with Apple airport devices requiring a firmware patch on the netgear side.....(sans patch, my Win computers had zero internet issues while all the apple machines kept getting page not displayed and/or super slow connection speeds. Various "pinwheel of death" lockups (Apple's equiv to the Blue screen of death) and the occasional virus since GFU still insists she doesn't need to spend $$$$ for an AV suite.

Windows machines:

Far be it from me from being fair and objective......in the world of Windoze.....i found out last nite what's up with my main Core2 machine. It failed again last nite, same symptoms......can't get past POST. Took 12 resets before it finally got past it. An hour's worth of digging revealed that it's the dreaded COMP INT bug and it's a known ASUS issue with certain high end motherboards. Then spent another hour half updating the BIOS and checking voltage settings for my RAM. Hopefully that fixes it. I'm not too enamored of ASUS at this point.......will probably go back to MSI....never had a problem with my old MSI board in the 8 years i had it.........till it caught fire.

GFU's original preapple Vista laptop was a frisbee wannabe......biggest Gates inspired issue with it was Microsoft's decision to modify how Vista handles DNS requests on Microsoft based servers vs. the rest of the world. Resulted in WIFI issues where my XP laptops never had an issue connecting while the Frisbee couldn't connect. Modifying the registry solved that problem....and GFU's retirement of Gates produces for Jobs products settled the matter further!

overwhelming.

Have only had time to take a quick peak at it thus far and admire the map. I remain dismayed that someone felt it necessary to list a seperate exp value for every ground device in a unit (and units on average have between 12-24 ground devices!)....despite the fact that on average, the values all fall within 5 point of each other. There is such a thing as too much detail!

Havn't even attempted to give an order yet. Such a thing would probably result in the collapse of the entire front. (what does this button do?.....oooo mass surrender......banzai attack........

GFU and i finished watching "The Pacific" the other nite. GFU asked a question during one fight scene showing the classic Banzai charge. "Why the hell do they do that?"

After explaining very....VERY briefly some of the factors.....her reply...."That's stupid.......lets go charge some guns"

Somewhere i thought......Mike Scholl is smiling.
