Hello all.
I started this game 4 days ago, spent 3 days reading the entire manual and going over the beginners guides on this forum, then finally this morning i made my first 2 day cycle move and i have some questions.
1) is the loss of the PHI inevitable?
I moved everything close to manila and am useing all my planes, subs, and the few DD's i had there to some pretty good success, especially the p-40's they are having spectacular success against jap bombers and would really hate to lose em,but all in all its lookin bad for PHI

2)Is wake gunna be lost?
I got lucky travelling back to Hawaii one of my CV TF's spotted the invasion force at wake and my plane did some nice damage to it but they are now on Dec 12th hammering wake with over 250 planes, i am so tempted to turn my TF back to wake and see if i can help out with it,,but the loss of that CV so soon would put a big hurt on me.

3) Malaya i beefed up the southern half but the japs are increasing there presence in the north,i feel strong there but once again am i fighting a futile battle there.

4) Dont know if i screwed up but i sent planes and supplies and goodies to midway via the USA hoping they will arrive before it gets hammered,,dont know if thats a mistake but its hard to see those guys out there all alone soon to be facing huge odds without help.

These are just a few of the questions i have,,if anyone has any feedback id like to hear it as i am new here and would love to here some success stories in these areas.
Thanks

1. You will most likely lose the Philippine Islands. It is very hard and usually very expensive to get supply and reinforcements in them.

2. Wake will probably fall, but don't worry too much about it.

3. Again, Malaya is hard to defend for ever. You can mess with your opponent( human or AI ) but he/she/it can bring way more force than you can and control the sea and air around Malaya.

4. I wouldn't put too much into Midway, it is hard to defend with only 6,000 troops. I tend to use it as historically, a small base use to patrol the sea in the area.

Maybe this is where I'm going wrong. I haven't spent time reading the entire manual. I've tried 3 times to play and each time I'm over whelmed.

I've never read the manual! I treat it as a buffet and pick away at it a little bit at a time. No disasters yet - well not many - well, hmm yes there was...... (censored by Allied HQ)

How I've been climbing the learning curve:

  • Tried the Coral Sea scenario.
  • Read the manual, cover to cover.
  • Played the Aleutians scenario twice.
  • Re-read the manual, cover to cover.
  • Tried more scenarios (Buccaneer to deepen my understanding of naval combat, Burma 2X to deepen my understanding of land & air combat).
  • Purchased WITP, tried the Guadalcanal scenario (to get a sense of perspective).
  • Dusted off my old copy of Uncommon Valor, tried the Papua-New Guinea scenario (again to gain a sense of perspective).
  • Reading interesting Forum posts all along the way, especially The War Room.
  • For background, reading book after Pacific War book from my local library.
  • Ready now to tackle WITP Tracker, Staff, and other play aids.
  • May start following AARs more closely.
  • Planning to re-read the entire manual again soon.
  • Waiting with bated breath for JWE & co.'s DEI scenario.

In short, a very systematic, thoughtful, well-planned, gradual upward climb. WITP:AE is IMO the best PC war game ever. I'll be playing this game (and any successor or spin-off) for years and years to come. I'm in no rush, feel no urgency to tackle the full-War scenarios. I'll take my time. And savor the journey and the good times awaiting me.

I liken learning WITP:AE to learning a new computer language (or, say, UNIX). Learn the basics, try something here, experiment there, read, reflect, take my time. If I want to be competent in the language (or operating system), Rome Wasn't Built in a Day. I aim for fluency, not to speak Pidgin. Slow and Steady Wins the Race.

That's how I do it anyway.

If 250 planes are hitting Wake it's because KB {six carriers} are there.  Not a place to take your precious carriers early in the war.

Midway makes a goog sub refueling base and a patrol plane base.  It is not a MUST HAVE location but nice to have.

Malaya will fall.  It may take a while, but it will fall.  Get as many supplies in that you can untill your enemy closes the door.  Same with Java and the Philippines.  Eventually you will run out of supplies and loose them.  Try to make them last by adding supplies but do not send reinforcements in {few will survive to get there and they will only eat supplies faster}.

yes i know thats to much time reading before making a move,, heck even my wife was like what are you doing just sitting there reading,,but this game is very complex and i like it,,it is like a PTOII on super doses of steroids. Bravo to Matrix games this one is a gem,,makes you think,,makes you work.

PHI forces are all in the triangle and fighting hard, got maybe 6-10 days left and it will be gone.

Malaya i had the suspision that i might lose it,,they are holding there own very well, but i did start moving vessels out of singapore.Hate losing combat ships, im sure they are expensive to replace.

Will say tho,, love this game, it makes you think which is really rare in the pc gaming world
