Per,

Riddle me this...

I can understand significantly greater hydroelectrical sources in your more mountainous North. For such a reliability though, what about during freezing weather? Don't these lakes freeze solid during the wintertime, thus making hydroelectric less feasible for several months of the year?

Something I hadn't really thought about...

The hydro plant dams fill up during spring (snow melt) and summer. These dams are so large that they never freeze solid, thus they run during winter as well.

Thread forgive me for keeping this going, but it's interesting...

OK. Understood. Even in the colder climes, there wouldn't be more than a few meters of ice thickness with underlying liquid water, right?

So, as the winter goes on, presumably the water level under the ice layer drops as water is released? Do you wind up with a 3-4 meter-thick 'shell' of ice overlying an air pocket and then the liquid water beneath that? If so, does this shell spontaneously fracture, break and fall back into the water or remain a mostly intact ice bridge for months on end?

Ice thickness on the dams vary from just a couple of decimeters up to ~1.5 meters depending on how harsh winter we have.

When they let the water out, most times the weight of the ice causes it to follow the water down and so just settles. In some conditions though, it happens that an air pocket is created in between the ice and the water. It usually fractures and fall down when the next major snowfall comes and put more weight on the ice.

One (very) common hobby for those living up north is to go on (family) day trips on snow scooters (pic below). Those who live close to these water dams usually keeps a very tight watch on how much water they let out of the dams to avoid running a scooter across unsafe ice. Additionally, you never venture closer than ~100m to the dam as the water turbulence from the turbine inlets makes the ice even more precarious.

How do you save a background from an existing presentation to use in a new one.

Never mind, why don't you just delete every slide but one of those with the background you want to use, and then copy/paste that one. Then edit the content on each individual slide?

Nice.

We have a fair number of snowmobile fans here too. Lakes are common transit points. We've got upwards of 12,000 lakes in this state, but I don't think we have any hydroelectric dams (we're a pretty flat state) just those that control for flooding. So, the ice thickness is more homogenous across a region of the state and less subject to some of the localized individual lake conditions on those lakes that are dammed.

I can appreciate the danger of an unsupported ice shell over open water. Bad news. Still...it must be quite beautiful and striking? An ice cavern of sorts under the ice? That is beaucoup cool.

There have been accidents when snow scooters have gone through the ice, and the person have found out that the ice is 0.5 meters above with no chance of getting up. They of course died Fortunately, those ice conditions rarely occur.

Well, the more correct way to do it would be like below. You'll have to excuse me , but my PP is in Swedish (2003 version);

As you can see in the pic below, if I wan't to set a slide background for use in all my slides, I go through the menu I believe is labeled "View" in the english version. Choose "Background" (?) and then "Slide background". Then you can edit the slide background as much as you wish, including copy/pasteing from the slide background of the presentation you want to use, to the new one.

You're welcome.

I haven't experienced the Mac version - you mean they've managed to make it even more complicated (than needed)?

No, I probably confused myself. I've already found several things in very easily accessed and common sense location after looking for them everywhere else.

The Mac versions are very similar to the Windows versions. The functionality is the same.

Texas powerplants aren't winterized as well as our northern neighbors mostly because Texas (except for the panhandle area) rarely experiences subfreezing temperatures for any significant time nor (especially in this case) over such a large area. I also doubt how well powerplant staff are trained for operation in subfreezing weather.

Turns out I wasn't hit by a blackout yesterday, just a building snafu.

Yep - the "official" explanation of the power plant failures is "improper winterization".

No idea if it's true or not . . . mostly because I have only a vague idea how a power plant works. Just assuming that pipes freezing are not necessarily to the advantage of steam production.

Now I'm worried that I see so many electricians wandering around the building. They have a dazed and confused look, although that may be just their natural expression.

No, no, no, operator error.

A kindergartner was practicing spelling with magnetic letters on the refrigerator: cat, dog, dad, and mom have been proudly displayed for all to see. One morning while getting ready for the day, he bounded into the room with his arms outstretched. In his hands were three magnetic letters: G-O-D. "Look what I spelled, Mom!" with a proud smile on his face. "That's wonderful!" his mom praised him. "Now go put them on the fridge so Dad can see when he gets home tonight." The mom happily thought that the Catholic education is certainly having an impact. Just then, a little voice called from the kitchen. "Mom? How do you spell zilla?"

Two Swedes - Sven & Ole got a pilot to fly them to Canada to hunt moose. They bagged six. As they started loading the plane for the return trip, the pilot said the plane could take only four moose. The two lads objected strongly, 'Last year we shot six and the pilot let us put them all on board; he had the same type plane as yours.' Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded. However, even on full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down a few moments after take-off. Climbing out of the wreck Sven asked Ole, 'Any idea where we are?' 'Yaaah ai tink vi are pretty close to vere vi crashed last yer.'

A man absolutely hated his wife's cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway. The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat! He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there. Hours later the man calls home to his wife: 'Jen, is the cat there?' 'Yes', the wife answers, 'why do you ask?' Frustrated, the man answered, 'Put him on the phone, I'm lost and need directions to get back home!'

The parents were a little worried, as the son was still unable to decide about his future career. They decided to do a small test. They took a ten-dollar bill, a bible, and a bottle of whiskey, and put them on the front hall table, and hid, pretending they're not home. The father's plan was: 'If our son takes the money, he will be a businessman, if he takes the bible, he will be a priest - but if he takes the bottle of whiskey, I'm afraid our son will be a drunkard.' So, the parents waited nervously, hiding in the nearby closet. Peeping through the keyhole they saw their son arrive. The son saw the note they had left. Then, he took the 10-dollar bill, looked at it against the light, and slid it in his pocket. After that, he took the bible, flicked through it, and took it. Then, he grabbed the bottle, opened it and took a whiff, to get assured of the quality. Then he left for his room, carrying all the three items. The father slapped his forehead, and said: 'Darn. Our son is going to be a politician!'

If you are 40, or older, you might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways… yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of 60. I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 6 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car.. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no, what's the world coming to?!?!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-finks!

And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!
And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!

And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were luckily, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!
See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or any time before!

At the Henry Street Hebrew School, the rabbi finished the day's lesson. It was now time for the usual question period.

"Rabbi," asked little Melvin, "there's something I need to know."

"What's that, my child?" asked the rabbi.

"Well, according to the Scriptures, the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea, right?"

"Right."

"And the Children of Israel beat up the Philistines, right?"

"Uh--right."

"And the Children of Israel built the Temple, right?"

"Again you are correct."

"And the Children of Israel fought the Egyptians, and the Children of Israel fought the Romans, and the Children of Israel were always doing something important, right?"

"All that is correct," agreed the rabbi. "So what's your question?"

"What I need to know is this," demanded Melvin. "What were all the grown-ups doing?"

Hi all,

quote:

ORIGINAL: scott1964
