A new opponent in my pbem says he needs my password to start the game. He is Jap. I'm Alies. It's been a while since I started a new game and I don't recall having to send my password to my opponent. Is this how it's done and I don't remember ?

YES, it is "Jean". Thanks for the warning, I'll be staying away from him. He says that he is the comander of the French Aircaft Carrier fleet. So he is crazy. I thought he sounded a little "OFF".

lol
and I thought your "opponent´s" threads in the opponent wanted forum would be fun, but this now tops everything. Stay away from this guy, the mentioned threads are warning enough already.

Ok, I am Adolf Galland. In case you don´t believe me, yes, the 109 with Mickey Mouse painted next to the cockpit is mine...
But still sometimes it makes me wonder who on earth anybody could find it funny to cheat on a game like this. Psychologically at least interesting I think. Is that guy doing this out of a habit?

haven´t you read the "Helmut" threads in the opponent wanted subforum? Now it´s "Jean" and I more and more start to understand the reason for IP bans.

I'm thinking about starting a new game, but all these multinicks around... I dunno...
just go with a long term forum member
With all those strange personalities trying to find an opponent, I am againg fiddling with an idea to create some kind of "Hall of fame" under "Opponents wanted" section with "registered" "official" PBEM games (scenario/started/ended/result/timeframe etc.) and maybe comments from opponents.
As any PBEM is really a "serious long term affair" that would highly facilitate decisions, saving long term credible, trustworthy partners from madmen (and wasted time).

The problem with this is, if you require an opponent to have established their credibility before anyone accepts a PBEM with them, then how do the new guys, who are serious, ever get the chance to build a reliable reputation.

Ark,
I will gladly submit your name for nomination......but only if you send me some money..

A lot of people will play one of the short scenarios as PBEM and do an AAR of it. After that you have a lot more cred.

Not to steer people to go read the WitE forum, but I've seen one thread there concerning a massive PBEM scam artist already. Giles-something. Apparently, and I don't have the game or really understand the mechanics of this, WitE uses a new Slitherine server (Slitherine is the firm Matrix merged with recenlty) to expedite PBEM match-ups and turn delivery mechanics. Apparently though it also reduces the amount of interaction players have with each other outside of the turns themselves, unless they take measures to find each others' e-mail. Also apparently it is possible for one player to muck with the game settings in a very significant way and not be easily caught.
So this Giles-person made his Germans uber-powerful in reinforcements, fortification, morale, leadership etc.-type settings, and proceeded to kick his Soviet opponent around like a tin can. (Although he also suffered terrible losses despite his tricks, showing that he's really a poor player.) When his opponent went and looked at what he'd done he found that it's not easy to bail on a game without going through the moderators.
Anyway, you can read the saga yourself. I may have some details wrong. But I thought it was interesting since these types of centrally-managed servers are probably the future for Matrix PBEM games.
