Kinda semi-interesting!
Hyuga class helicopter destroyer

They probably chose Ise and Hyuga as names for their hybrid carrier destroyers in happy commemoration of the brilliant hybrid battleships of 44-45!
Guess Japan doesn't like the idea of China building a high seas fleet with carriers.

Bout time. We could have sold them a CVN, it carries more. Expensive but worth it.

Glad you posted this, first I heard of it. Unlike Terminus I don't have time to crawl thru every thread and post snippy little one liners everywhere.

The day the JMSDF buys a CVN is the day that Elvis comes back to play at the Tokyo Grand Prix with Jimmy Hendrix and Don Mclean as opening acts.

To the OP, thanks for posting the pic. I never knew the Japs had a carrier again.

They spent about a billion on that boat. Another 2 billion would have got them alot more capability. Wonder if SK wants one, we need the jobs.

Hehe, that would be the day but why not let Japan and SK be the frontline in the Far East
Sometimes such decisions and revolutions come back to haunt you though...if you had sold a CVN to the Shah in the late 70s for example!-)

It's not a carrier.

I mean it sort of looks like a carrier.......it carries aircraft.....but Like the name says, it's a "helicopter- destroyer"

a
Had the US sold the shah a CVN it would likely be in the same shape as the F-14s the US sold them; mostly junk and stripped for spare parts.

Helicopter destroyers? What for? ASW? Aren´t there enough other ship classes capable of doing this?

Much easier to get it through their consitutional limitations and political constraints. Very hard to convince a layman that a carrier with planes is only a self defence weapon platform. However a helicopter destroyer to protect the shipping routes to the Home Islands from enemy submarines, that is a much easier sell.

Aye, that's NOT a carrier, those are offensive weapons platforms.

On the other hand a DESTROYER with enhanced helicopter-handling facilities.... Well, that's something they can slip through.

F-35Js? No, honourable Diet member, they aren't for the Ise and Hyuga. Those are useful if airstrips get bombed. Their VTOL capacity is purely for land use.

What do you want to bet the hangar spaces in those "Helicopter-carrying destroyers" has been carefully calculated to hold VTOL F-35s?

Kinda reminds me of Germany in the 30s ( although I don't think Japan has a belligerent agenda )... Bomb bay doors? Not at all, those are merely rapid air mail unloading hatches, honest. Why make them so fast? TO avoid fighters? Absolutely not? The German people deserve the most rapid air mail service in the world

Indeed ironic news. They kind of look like an LHD or LHA, or whatever these things are called nowadays.

The Japanese probably wouldn't buy a CVN even if offered with a discount. It is not only the initial investment, but also the upkeep costs that may be a little to unattractive for most other countries. Besides, the USN has already plenty, and they are readily doing the important police work... Saves some money for the health and social systems, or infrastructure, or just the state museums... That's probably why Germany left the task of building two carriers for the European Forces simply to France and GB...

Of course the fact that GB and France actually know how to build and operate carriers (and Germany does not) has nothing to do with it...

Well France probably does - we forgot how to operate propers aircraft carriers years ago - and as for building them, there was even talk that the QE and PoW would need be built in France .

Frankly, if the Germans are relying on the British and French to cobble together an effective carrier arrangement between them...well they should think May 1940 and decide to dust down whatever's left of the Graf Zeppelin It can't be any worse.

Sorry - (very minor) - but definitely tongue in cheek - rant at the pitiful state of our navy...

Don't bet the house on this one. The Japanese are getting really antsy about the chinese military buildup and territory claims (which happen to include some of Japans most critical shipping routes). We could end up seeing the Japanese amend their constitution to begin rearming, and carriers could end up on the shopping list. I think the age of the super carrier is starting to come to an end as their vulnerability, expense, and cheaper options become available.

I doubt the US would have any political problem with the Japanese rearming either as they would be a valuable ally in containing any chinese expansionistic desires (along with the Indians, and eventually Russians).

We have the CVN Enterprise due to be removed from service soon. I would prefer to sell it to Japan or SK, or even Taiwan (just to piss off the Chinese) at a discount, than to see it sold for scrap to India or China (who would then probably refit it and put it to use themselves).

My 2 cents on the matter.

FWIW , the US had scheduled the sale of 4 Kidd Class Destroyers to the Shah that went to the USN shortly after he was overthrown.

I saw pictures of the Japanese vessel on another site last year, smart looking ship IMO.

I have thought the same thing. Both countries need to buy one from us !

And Germany too !

And we keep the maintenance contracts !

And constant upgrades !

Just like my IT vender does to me !

( I had to edit this, I actually like my IT vender )

Tongue in cheek aside, opposing arms sales to North Korea, Iran, Jemen, Libyen and half a dozen other states doesn't make me a pacifist.
Probably too close to politics; let's rest it at that.
