It seems that many of the European scenarios involve lots of armored units and I was wondering how most of you use your infantry in cases like these?

Combined forces wise employment is the key in this game IMO, at least in 90% of the cases.I think spwaw is really good at depictiong this. European theatre is no exception: try to move your armor without infantry support on bocage country, or through the hell of Hurtgen forest, or along the narrow paths in the Italian high hills ground, and see what happens ;)

Agree... Also, engineers and infantry are a fast way of clearing mines..
Also... infantry close assaults are your best friend.

I send infantry ahead of my armor to locate and fix the enemy, then bring up my tanks to finish them off.

I think spotting the enemy is indeed the most important role of infantry. I am currently playing a really long campaign, 124 battles from September '39 to December '49.

I'm also letting my infantry get as much combat experience as possible, to make them more effective for clearing enemies out of towns and forests. I usually let infantry spot the enemy, pound him with tanks and artillery and then move in with the infantry to finish him off. You have to be careful, so that they don't disperse due to much fire (I just finished the 6th battle, most of my squads are still pretty green).

I've given myself 3500 battle points and the computer 7000. That makes it more interesting, you face huge amounts of everything, especially infantry. That way you really learn to appreciate how dangerous enemy infantry can be if you blithely charge ahead with your tanks. Close coordination of your different units becomes an abolute necessity.

By the way, you should try some battles where the AI has much more battle points. It occasionally becomes downright creative if it has that much points to play with.

If you want to read up on the role of infantry, here's some interesting material and discussions:

While you are there, check out the rest of the site. It's well worth the trouble.

Infantry is very important when your tanks are inferior. T-34 and KV-1 are bad news during 1941. My kills against those (as German) distributes 50-50 between tanks and infantry.
Victory locations are also lot easier to hold when you dismount platoon of infantry into them.

Cheers,

M.S.

If you want to play in a way that is faithful to the historical events you have to outmanoveur those Soviet tanks and take them then out from behind.

On what kind of maps are you playing? Plains, forest or rough?

in this game this can be really hard to do, if you dont get em with the first shot, then often times ive seen the whole tank turn around to shoot at you (on your turn!)

tho sometimes you can surround them ;)

I know this is probably a silly question but how does infantry take out a tank?

Infantry can take out tanks in many ways.

Integral AT weapons, such as Anti Tank Rifles, or later in the war, the various rocket launchers.

Sometime, infantry with a large MG can take out an armored car, or very lightly armored tank with MG fire, and I've seen immobilization results from rifle fire.

And, of course, there are infantry close assaults.

Armoured units can be the queens of the battlefield, artillery may be the god, but infantry is the backbone of the God.

Warfare in cities, rough terrain, forests, jungle or swamps is practically impossible without infantry. Infantry moves along the tanks, protects them from hostile infantry, sweeps the hotspots, is usually regarded more lethal to enemy infantry than tanks (ok, not the Sturmtiger...) and can perform any task given.

Never, never underestimate the infantry. Try to move your tank near an unsuppressed enemy infantry squad and see what happens. From early 1944 onwards infantry with Panzerfausts, bazookas and RPG's become real tank killers.

There are, however, some areas of warfare where tanks reign supreme. Desert warfare is usually ruled by tanks (large fields and good vision), and also tanks are faster. But I usually buy more infantry than tanks, since tanks are quite prone to draw fire. Infantry can sneak up near an enemy and open fire with terrible results.
