I guess I should amend that to "up way too late last night."

The good news is that it's my Friday and a half day at that.  Looking at a 4.5 day weekend starting around lunch today.

Now, if only I had a turn to keep me out of trouble.

I didn't get the job I interviewed for last week. Apparently they changed the job spec after they interviewed me to more closely suit an internal candidate. So that was nice.

Well that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

I was talking to someone from a large , multinational package moving company just this weekend about that very issue. He was complaining about how difficult it was at times to promote certain people from within. He said that they would often end up with very narrowly drawn job descriptions in order to do so.

Ah yes, the "internal candidate" paper-over faux 'process'. Sorry about that, mate. Well, was it at least a nice hotel they put you up in?

I thought I'd acknowledge your posting within the needed 30 minute interval, lest it be deleted.

So, you've managed maintenance problems with that metal thing that sticks out the side of the aircraft then?

It was a day trip. I didn't know they were interviewing an internal candidate until after my interview. Oh well.

A 'large, multinational package moving company' located in Tennessee, stu? Gee, who could possibly have a major hub around there?

BTW, Simon, is that new job was also in vicinity of home (you wanted work closer to home IIRC)?

All I did last week was manage maintenance problems with metal things on the side of aircraft, and those belong to the airframe technicians

The vids are maybe biased, but it sums up the air force for me

That was rather sucky. If they wanted to promote the guy, why didn't they just do that? Is there some law which says that they're required to give the rest of the world a shot at this position before they're allowed to do what they wanted to do in the first place?

Clarification; When I use the term "fruitcake", I use it in the "nutty/wacko/'one beer short of a six pack' meaning. Not the sexual one.

Yes, there frequently is. Many firms (and Universities) are obliged to have a 'search' process that invites external applicants to apply. When there's an internal candidate in mind, the process is-how shall we say-"expedited" somewhat in order to comply with the mandate for the search, but yet still conclude that the internal candidate is superior.

Part of the 'game' is to craft the job description so tightly as to really narrow down the search options to n=1. Usually this is done before the job announcement-after the fact is kind of 'cheating'.
