This is a small point but I landed a group of engineers on a
deserted island - they are now standing around somewhat red-faced as the are unable to do anything having no attack option.

OK - I learnt my lesson but I would have thought a thousand
men of any type on a deserted island should own the island regardless of combat ability. Surly the island should change
ownership automatically in a case like this.

I've never used engies for this type of mission so bear with me here. Normally engineering units have an assault strength of zero IIRC but I don't know if that's important on a desert island with nobody contesting you. Have you used these types of units this way before? I always use some kind of infantry unit for these types of operations.

I'm assuming that the rock they are on is identified as being "enemy" controlled by having a red or green dot on it.

How is the unit's disruption? If the unit is too far away from their HQ it might take a while to recover after they have landed so they can assault the enemy "base". How long have they been sitting there with the "attack" orders options grayed out?

This is documented in the Manual. Since even unoccupied beaches need to be "assulted" to change ownership, Engineering units with no Assault Value can't be used to take ownership.

I don't really have a problem with the assault mechanism -- seems a reasonably good model of the difference between moving through or sitting in one small spot in a hex (not taking control of the hex) and spreading out and "beating the bushes" to verify there is no enemy presence to actually secure the hex.

However, in this particular type of situation, it is a bit gamey.

I concur about the gameyness. How much assaulting does an abandoned hut need afterall? But with the value and shortage of engineering units I usually have other things for them to do that are more important than weekend junkets to deserted beaches.

In my defence it was a little more then a junket - it was quite a big rock - Russell Island. It cost me 2 DD's and an AP to put them there as well :(

The problem is that bases are Allied or Japanese. I'd argue that a level 0 "base" with no troops, planes, or ships should be able to be captured by any unit.

In the grand scheme of things, its really minor though.

Send in an APD on a fast transport mission with a Marine Raider unit or if Japanese an SNLF unit and attack. You don't need much to take the island. I use the Raiders unit to capture un-ocupied islands and then leave them for future use.

You can also use your subs to go around and capture dots. After takeing the dot I pick up my men and move on to the next dot.
