Sadly it appears that this is the only active AAR in the WITP forum. It does take up lots of time and effort to put something together. This is now running 3 months behind the game and at times it gets a little confusing not to mix the 2 up.

Combat

Myitkyina was hit by 38 X Liberators in the mid morning and there was little opposition. Damage was estimated to have been light and 2 planes were damaged.

Near Koumac the 65th Brigade was hit again by Allied aircraft and casualties were thought to have been moderate while no planes were damaged.

Nobody in VMF-222 knew when the orders came for the unit to move to San Francisco that they would marry up with their new planes there. 2LT Robert Irvine of VMF-222 walks the flight line and inspects his new Corsair. His unit now is awaiting transport so they may be deployed to some far flung Pacific base. He can't wait to get his bird into the skies against the Japanese. He rushes off to see the flight surgeon in an attempt to be cleared for flying again. He leaves the hospital in a dejected mood as he was told to return tomorrow afternoon to see the doctor. In the meantime some Corsairs roar by overhead. That night in the mess a couple of the pilots excitedly tell of their first flight in the Corsairs. “That bird is sheer power. Man are they fast! Acceleration galore! The trick on the taxiway is you have to zigzag to see where you're going, but once in the air...”

“Have you seen Lucky? I've looked everywhere for him and nothing,” says a distraught Red.

Cookie shakes his head and replies, “That beast hasn't even come around the galley yet today.”

Palawan's crew organizes a search for the dog and sure enough they find him. It seems that Lucky found a nest of rats and proceeded to dine on the babies after chasing off the adults.

Slim hates to admit it, but he's bored and wonders when the 2nd Marines will get their next task. The new men have been drilled and they can function well at their tasks, but under fire who knows only time will tell.

A letter is delivered to Dave by a messenger from the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal) informing him that his monthly allotment of gasoline will be reduced by 40% effective April 1, 1943. He's more than a little upset because he knows that there's no shortage of gasoline, just rubber. Sandy comes into the garage and sees the look on his face and he just hands her the notice. She reads it and mutters, “damned company.”

The Pentagon has decided to let things proceed along the planned lines and they're taking a wait and see attitude pending what happens over the next couple of months as supplies are moved forward and units refit.

Yes -- everyone else has gone over to AE. But we appreciate your sticking with this AAR; even the legendary Cuttlefish has run into problems keeping his latest game posted.

The amount of time for maintaining an AAR is really something... while play continues (well, at least in my case), the AAR hasn't...

My admiration for continuing with your effort!!!

It isn't easy keeping this going between the work on the house and the lightning hit we took recently. Tonight I'm going to beg off and sack out without an installment. With any luck I'll do an entry in the morning before my trip to the doctor for a lower region exploration.

The IJA 65th Brigade in the jungles near Koumac was hit for suspected moderate loses by Allied planes, none of which were damaged. The 1St Marines then attacked the Japanese and gained a little ground. It was thought to have caused heavy casualties among the Japanese troops while the Marines had light losses. The Marines need a rest and refit so they'll be moving to Noumea soon while the Army gets the honor of mopping up.

Kweiyang was hit by Japanese planes for a change and they inflicted moderate damage and light casualties. A lone Helen was seen trailing smoke as it departed. There are to many fighters flying escort for these attacks to be opposed.

A Betty attacked the SS Hake about 140 miles SW of Kagoshima, but the sub managed to avoid being hit thanks to the warning provided by it's radar unit.

As they approach French Frigate Shoals Bill begins to relax a little. They convoy has executed it's mission and so far all is well. Soon they'll arrive at Pearl and then who knows what comes next. Sitting in his cabin Bill writes to Sandy telling her of his loneliness and how much he misses her.

Benham swings lazily at anchor and her crew is itching for something to do. Before any liberty is granted her skipper wants certain tasks performed. The men aren't happy about this, but go about their jobs efficiently. Phil is in command of the ship as LCDR Worthington is ashore handling administrative things at HQs.

Ed will continue to attend planning sessions for Operation Revenge while his old gals get some needed work. A couple of them make ready to sail for the yards in the US for refits.

Stick is still not cleared for flight duty and he's going nuts watching and hearing about the training flights. One of the other pilots jokingly said that Stick would be lucky to ship out with the squadron, given his current condition. Though he doesn't believe that he did have troubles sleeping last night. One thing is certain, VMF-222 has lethal birds now and the pilots are loving it.

The crew of Palawan watch as AKs begin the process of loading. They have no orders so taking it easy is what they'll do. Captain Demesa is surprised that so many of the crew are still on the Palawan as he gave permission for them to come and go as they see fit. What they miss in the darkness is an Allied naval force departed Noumea to shell the Japanese troops outside of Koumac.

The Russians took Rzhev today.

173 Londoners were killed today when in a panic they were crushed to death at the Bethnal Green tube station. The panic was caused by the noise made by a new AAA weapon that was heard for the first time.

The 65th Brigade continued to get hammered by Allied air and it was reported to have suffered moderate casualties. No Allied planes were damage. A couple of hours later the ground beneath the feet of the men of the 65th Brigade shook as 96 X B-17E and 115 X B-24D rained death down from above. Japanese loses were thought to have been heavy. A naval bombardment of the Japanese troops outside of Koumac hit in the afternoon causing what was thought to have been light casualties.

SS Hake was attacked by 2 X ML 125 miles SW of Kagoshima. No damage to the sub was done.

Kweiyang was attacked and sustained light damage and casualties. No Japanese planes were damaged.

O'Bannon's convoy continues towards Pearl at a steady 8 knots. There was a near collision between 2 AKs last night, but no damage was done. Frank and Bill are talking in the wardroom while having a sandwich. The topic of discussion is the Navy's program of taking veteran sailors from ships, replacing them with newly trained (green) men so that new ships will have some veterans on board to insure their smooth operation. “I wonder who we'll be losing this time around,” says Frank.

The Tarpon arrived in Noumea and promptly tied up at a dock. Her crew was granted liberty, though it's being done in shifts.

Cookie, Red and Lucky are spending the day ashore and as they walk along they suddenly hear, “Hey Red, how are ya?” They have stumbled into some of Tarpon's crew and after a brief argument with the bar's owner they join the submariners for a drink, with Lucky. The dog is always a big hit wherever he goes and today is no exception as the barmaid pays more attention to the dog than the sailors. She feeds him some scraps of meat and gives him water. She doesn't know it yet, but she's made a friend for life. The men share tales of what they've been going through and toast to victory and long life.

Dave savors his morning cup of coffee and says, “If there's one thing to get me going and pave the way for a good day it's some hot coffee. I'm going to really try and conserve a bit to make it last through the month this time.” Sandy smiles and hands him a plate of flapjacks, eggs and maple syrup. He continues with, “Life is good. This is a meal fit for a king. What did I ever do to deserve such a wonderful daughter? No, don't answer that because we both know that the stork didn't bring you,” he laughs.

Stick is suffering more from depression than any injury he had from the crash. All of his pals are getting to know their Corsairs while he just cools his heels. The squadron commander actually gave him some administrative duties to attend to “Since you can't do anything else for a while.” He complained that he's a pilot, not a clerk to no avail.

The man known to Pete and Sylvia only as John Doe left yesterday and still hasn't returned. They both discuss this and wonder what he's up to. “Syl we better forget about it as his type don't want you to know about them.”

Meanwhile John Doe and CDR Eric Feldt are meeting in Cooktown and trying to work something out to their mutual benefit. Eric has the Special Ops working under his command and John needs information. It isn't long before they agree on a course of action to try and obtain information about the Japanese in Australia.

The Japanese troops outside of Koumac were subjected to another naval bombardment. It was thought that they suffered moderate casualties. The 65th Brigade was hit again by Allied air power and the Japanese had moderate loses. No Allied planes were damaged. Another air attack on the 65th Brigade by Flying Fortresses and Liberators caused additional moderate casualties later in the day.

Gili Gili's defenses were tested by 69 X B-17E and the Japanese put up 14 X Zero, 3 X Jack and 15 X Tony. 11 X Zero were destroyed (3 damaged), 3 X Tony were downed (9 damaged), 3 X Jack destroyed with another burning on the airfield and a Mavis was destroyed on the ground. The airbase was reported to have sustained moderate damage and troops were thought to have had light casualties while 6 X B-17E were shot down and another 42 were damaged.

Kweiyang was attacked by Helens escorted by Tojos and the base sustained moderate damage and the troops had light casualties. No Japanese planes were hit.

SS Amberjack was attacked by DDs about 40 miles NE of Aparri and suffered minor damage. The Amberjack was attacked again in the afternoon by DDs and she suffered additional light damage.

SS Scorpion tried to attack some Japanese ships, but she was attacked by IJN ASW forces about 33 miles NE of Batan Island and suffered minor damage.

SS Hake was attacked by ASW forces about 129 miles SE of Nagasaki, but she made good her escape unharmed.

The crew of the O'Bannon is steadily becoming more and more excited at the prospect of reaching Pearl Harbor the day after tomorrow. It's increasingly hard for the crew to stay focused as the natural tendency to relax when you are in “safe” waters takes over. To combat this potential for laxness the officers have stepped up the frequency of drills to keep the men sharp. O'Bannon's record hasn't gone unnoticed.

Benham has received her orders and will be sailing with the next outbound convoy for points south and west. Phil hides his disappointment and goes about his duties in the manner expected of a naval officer. His skipper has submitted reports on all of the officers on the Benham and their performance. Phil hopes for a ship of his own and from what he sees with the rapid expansion of the USN unless he screws up his dreams should become a reality.

The orders for the 1st Marine Division to stand down have been issued and other than patrols the men try to relax while the Army troops start to filter into the front lines in the Koumac area. Major Smith is busily holding meetings with his Army counterparts so that they hit the ground running and hopefully mop up the remaining Japanese troops quickly with minimal casualties.

A letter appeared today for Sandy from Bill. It's another old one, but she doesn't care as it's something from him.

Red and Cookie have plans to meet with more of Tarpon's crew this evening for a bite to eat and a nip or two. Captain Demesa reminds them to keep an eye on Lucky as him straying off would be a huge hit to the crew's morale and a certain barmaid would be happy to adopt him. The three of them share a laugh about it.

CDR Wallace of the SS Tarpon has a little talk with the crew about staying out of trouble as Shore Patrol brought 2 men back this morning after they sobered up in the brig.

Bomber Command reported their first effective attack on Essen using “Oboe.”

The 65th Brigade, outside of Koumac, got hit for moderate loses in the early morning and all planes left the area undamaged. The 1st Marines attacked the Japanese near Koumac and inflicted moderate loses while they sustained light casualties. The Japanese are in a hopeless situation, but they refuse to surrender. The Marines wonder what kind of men they're fighting that seem to welcome death. The Army was supposed to take over for the Marines, but the Marine commanders want to finish the job that they started and the Army troops need a rest after their travels.

Kweiyang took moderate damage and light casualties from the Japanese air raid which left undamaged.

SS Amberjack was attacked by IJN DDs 38 miles NE of Aparri. If it hadn't been for her radar the sub would've sailed right into the Japanese ships on the surface. Now with moderate damage to her systems from the viscous depth charge attack she will make for port and be repaired.

The SS Scorpion attacked an IJN ASW TF, but scored no hits 12 miles NW of Batan Island. She then slipped away undetected.

A huge convoy left Hawaiian water bound for the USA tonight.

Sylvia gets home and is visibly upset. Pete asks her what's going on and she tells him about the patient who lost both legs in the fighting with the Japanese. He committed suicide today and she was the one who discovered him. Pete knows that there's little he can do to comfort her, but tries anyway.

Stick continues to fume as all of the other pilots are getting in flight time and he just cools his heels. What really galled him today was that one plane was down for maintenance so the pilot used his plane.

O'Bannon and her convoy arrived tonight in Pearl Harbor. The mission was accomplished without the loss of a single scrap of cargo, much to the relief of Bill. Once Frank had brought the ship to her berth Bill was off to check in at HQs. Frank dispatched some men to retrieve the ship's mail and he then turns his attentions to a liberty schedule. Upon Bill's return he tells Frank that there's nothing new since they left. Frank hands Bill a stack of letters and says that it must be nice to have somebody miss you that much.

Benham swings at her anchorage and Phil is itching to get back to sea, but no orders yet. Maybe tomorrow.

45 X P-38G swept Wyndham and were greeted by 11 X Oscar, 15 X Tojo and 20 X Tony. The Allied pilots did well considering that they got their baptism of fire today and they are still at bit green. 7 X Oscars went down and 3 X Tony died also at the cost of 10 X P-38G shot down and 8 others damaged.

The 65th Brigade was hit again from the air and casualties were thought to have been heavy. All Allied planes departed after expending their ordinance unharmed.

At Makin 18 X Betty appeared and attacked the unloading AKs. They were unescorted and challenged by 16 X F4U-1 so the ensuing fight was a lopsided victory for the new Allied planes. 6 X Betty were destroyed and another 6 were damaged while 4 X F4U-1 were damaged. No ships were harmed in the attack. This was the first taste of combat for the Corsairs and they did well, especially considering that their pilots had very limited experience. Not to much later another 6 X Betty appeared and 12 X F4U-1 and 12 X P-38G were on station. A lone Betty was destroyed and one Allied plane of each type was damaged. The Bettys ran and never got within sight of their intended targets.

Kweiyang underwent it's daily dose of bombs that caused moderate damage and light casualties. A Helen was reportedly hit by ground fire.

A sub attack on two USN DMs was attempted about 189 miles NE of Tarawa. No hits were scored and the sub wasn't located by it's intended targets.

The SS Flying Fish attacked a small convoy 68 miles NW of Kwajalein and put 2 torpedoes into an AP. The escorts never located their tormentor.

At a meeting there are merchant ship captains and DD skippers assembled. Benham will sail as part of the escort. The mission is to resupply islands in SOPAC and SWPAC. Departure is scheduled for tomorrow in the early morning as soon as loading is done. The further they get from Pearl the smaller the convoy will become and the more vulnerable to attack as there will also be fewer escorts. The logistics of fighting a war spread out over thousands of miles of ocean is a daunting task and Phil realizes that not only replenishment of base's stocks are needed as stockpiles are built up with an eye towards future needs.

The Australian Ambassador leaves the White House with promises of additional support by the United States, something that London refused to do.

Stalin has instructed his people to contact Washington and inform them that not only are they willing to extend basing rights to the Americans, they will even allow combat troops on Russian soil.

Dave is in a grumpy mood as he wonders how he can make a living with no tires, few parts and little gas to sell. “The large companies are making huge profits on this war and the little guy gets kicked in the teeth for a change,” he says to Sandy over dinner.

A naval bombardment of the Koumac area wakened the Japanese troops just before dawn. Casualties were thought to have been moderate. The 65th Brigade was then attacked by Allied aircraft after the naval bombardment ended and it was estimated that Japanese troops suffered additional moderate casualties. No Allied planes were damaged in the raid. The 84th Naval Guard Unit outside of Koumac was targeted by 196 heavy bombers and once they were done hitting the Japanese positions the casualties were thought to have been very heavy. No planes were damaged. The USA 25th Division, which has finally relieved the 1st Marines, who are heading back to Noumea, attacked Japanese positions outside of Koumac. They took lots of ground and caused heavy casualties while sustaining light loses of their own. Still the Japanese refuse to surrender.

Mandalay was attacked by 24 X Blenheim, 12 X Wellington, 36 X Liberator, 62 X B-25C and 77 X P-38G. The Japanese countered this force with 42 X Zero and 22 X Jack. The loses on both sides were reportedly heavy as the debriefing summary at Imphal gave the following results in the official report. 32 X Zero destroyed, 19 X Jack destroyed, 2 X Dinah destroyed on the ground and moderate damage was done to the base. Japanese troop casualties were thought to have been moderately light. Allied loses were 3 X Blenheim shot down, 2 X Wellington damaged, 7 X Liberator damaged, a B-25C lost (2 damaged) and 22 X P-38G downed (10 damaged). A bloody affair, but one that in the long run will hopefully favor the Allied cause.

The SS Flying Fish tracked a small Japanese convoy all night and as it was approaching the anchorage at Kwajalein she hit an AP with a torpedo. Despite the counter made by the escorts the sub slipped away to resume her patrol as the depth charges never were dropped close enough to the sub to do any damage. The torpedoes have been improved and with radar the USN subs are rapidly turning into killers instead of targets.

Kweiyang was again bombed and again the base had moderate damage and the Chinese casualties were light. The ground fire damaged 2 X Nick and a Helen.

As the convoy sails to the southwest BPhil leaves the bridge and heads for his quarters. Planes buzz overhead searching for subs. Suddenly the klaxon sounds and he drops everything a takes off for the bridge. Upon his arrival he's informed that it appears to have been a false sonar contact, but they'll keep searching just to be sure. Phil heads back to his cabin and stops for a little something to eat on the way. They are in a trailing position at the moment and are checking a possible sub contact when suddenly the sonar goes dead. The men scramble to fix the unit and Phil can do nothing except to wait and let them do their jobs.

Ed reads the readiness reports for his old battle line and sees that the ships are getting the needed attention so they'll be ready for the next operation. He's been buried with administrative duties and is itching to be back at sea. He stretches and heads for his temporary office where an orderly hands him a letter from his niece, Elaine. She asks how he's doing and if he knows where Bill is. He sighs and thinks that the girl, though trivial, never gives up. He sits at his desk, puts his feet up and almost immediately falls asleep.

“You know that the downside of owning your own business is being able to get away from it,” says Pete. “I knew a man who always said that people with money didn't have the time for vacations and the people with the time had no money.” Sylvia playfully hits him on the top of his head and tells him not to worry about such things until after the war. “I haven't seen our friendly spy around lately, have you Mrs. Myers?” He playfully adds, “Maybe they're just trying to find a job daunting enough that they'll need me to do it.”

“Don't even joke about that,” she answers.

The SS Drum attacked some IJN MSWs and a DD 141 miles from Wyndham. She managed to torpedo an MSW, which sank almost immediately. After reloading her torpedo tubes the Drum tried to attack again, but couldn't manage to get into a decent position to launch her fish.

An air attack on Mandalay by 15 X Blenheim, 12 X Wellington, 29 X Liberator, 56 X B-25C and 52 P-38G was challenged by 34 X Zero and 9 X Jack. In the chaos that followed 29 X Zero were downed, 11 X Jack were destroyed (2 on the ground) and 3 X Dinah were burning on the ground. Damage to the base was heavy and ground casualties were thought to have been moderate. This was done at a cost of 4 X Liberator damaged, 2 X B-25C damaged and 8 X P-38G destroyed (6 damaged). Allied commanders are pleased with having a fighter that not only can mix it up with the Japanese and win, but also has the range to escort the bombers.

The 65th Brigade was bombed in the morning and sustained light casualties. Another air attack on the 65th Brigade a little later inflicted additional moderate loses. Allied troops then attacked in the continuing effort to clean out the last remaining Japanese defenders in the Koumac area. Japanese loses were placed at moderate and the Americans had very light casualties.

An air raid on Kweiyang caused light damage to the base, casualties were very light and a Nick was damaged.

Benham is in a trailing position and vigilantly probes the depths, air and surface for any possible contacts. Phil issued a well done to the men who repaired the sonar system as it took them the entire night to get it done. He thinks of the sonar operator that they had that knew the set inside and out, who was rotated to a new ship. These men will be fine and they are blending in well.

Bill managed to read just 2 of Sandy's letters last night before he dropped off to sleep. He reads another while having his breakfast and then it's off to attend to the myriad of things that command demands.

Palawan just sits at Noumea doing nothing but rusting away. Her crew doesn't mind a bit as they get to hit the bars and brothels. Cookie takes Lucky for a long walk every afternoon and he's decided that he and Red should explore the possibilities of buying land here too. Red isn't to keen on the idea, but as usual he listens to what Cookie has to say.

Stalin informs the Japanese government that it is his intention to strengthen the garrison of Sunwu. The justification given is the large number of IJA units in the area. He doesn't inform them of the plans being jointly developed with the Americans. Stalin firmly believes that the Allies will win the war and that he can influence and possibly control Roosevelt, not that pain Churchill though. With the Germans reeling since their crushing defeat at Stalingrad the Russians have kept up the pressure and only logistics are holding them back now. Stalin mulls his situation facing the Japanese and decides that for now the status quo will hold and once the air groups get new plane types and the Americans are in position to support him he'll attack.

Men in uniform everywhere are thinking more of home today than usual as it's Mother's Day. Mothers across the USA long for their sons to return home safely. Mrs. Orsini just sits in her living room silently staring at the wall that holds a picture of her deceased son.

U-510 torpedoes 8 ships in 3 hours off the coast of Brazil.

Due to issues with my desktop, where my AAR entries reside, there will be a delay or an undetermined amount of time before the story can continue.  I hope to make the delay as short as possible.

Yes I do back up, but that too has been struck down and my laptop doesn't have up to date files.

The IJA 65th Brigade, which has been abandoned by their country, underwent an awful hammering administered by 86 X B-17E and 83 X B-24D. Reports indicated that the Japanese sustained heavy casualties and no planes were damaged. The USA 25th Division attacked the Japanese troops in the Koumac area and losses to both sides were light.

The Gull Force Battalion was attacked by 6 X Betty just outside of the main Allied blocking positions that protect Alice Sprigs and Townsville and neither side had any loses.

It was a peaceful day at Sian until 25 X Oscar, 31 X Tojo and 12 X Tony appeared looking for trouble. The Chinese troops watched the Japanese planes milling around in the sky and then they left because there was no opposition offered by the Chinese.

At Kweiyang it was a different story as 31 X Nick, 19 X Jack and 2 X Tojo attacked the base doing moderate damage. A Dinah that was snooping around got shot up a bit by the ground forces.

“It's jungle and to far from a nice beach, forget it. Let's go this guy is just wasting our time,” says Red to Cookie. “Mister we told you what we were interested in and you take us here? This is nothing that we indicated and we've got better things to do than look at anything else you have.” Red turns and walks away with Cookie and Lucky.

“Come on Doc I'm fit as a fiddle,” say Stick to the doctor who is examining him. Somehow Stick has managed to see a different doctor and this does clear him for flight status. Stick practically flies out of the base hospital and returns to his squadron area more exited than he can ever remember being. Now he has to wait for the paperwork to arrive so than he may return to flight status.

Slim relaxes as he listens to Gunny talking to the other sergeants of the platoon. It seems that something is in the air and it's more than scuttlebutt. Well whatever it is he can wait as that's what Marines do best.

Sandy got another letter today and again it's an old one that somehow got misdirected. She reads it and thinks of how a gentle soul like Bill could fight a war. She has a discussion with Dave and his response was that Bill is a warrior through and through. “He's got a good head on his shoulders and he deals well with other people. He's the kind of officer who cares for his men more than how to get himself promoted.”

A naval bombardment of the the Japanese troops around Koumac was executed in the predawn hours inflicting light casualties. The USA 25th Division again attacked the Japanese after the ships retired with both sides taking light casualties.

The Gull Force Battalion was attacked by 11 X Oscar and 39 X Helen. The Aussies suffered moderate casualties and reportedly claimed to have damaged 8 X Helen.

Benham and her charges continue on course to deliver the goods that they carry. So far there has been nothing to upset the routine save for an occasional sonar contact (that ends up being lost). Phil is learning to relax on these missions. Not the kind of relaxation that could be considered laxness, but rather a peaceful feeling. Benham is in her usual trailing position and Phil is in the wardroom playing cards with another officer who's off duty. They talk about pre war days and their hopes and plans for after the fighting ends.

Slim is driving an orderly crazy as he constantly hovers waiting for his paper work to arrive. Finally the man says, “Look sir, you might as well get some chow. Even if the papers arrive now the schedule for today's flights are posted and final. I can't change the schedule and the skipper won't either.” With that Slim finally leaves HQs and wanders off with a forlorn look on his face. He knows that tomorrow's flights will be planned this afternoon and if his clearance hasn't arrived another day will be lost.

The 1st Marines are moving through LaFoa on their way back to an area outside of Noumea that has been set aside for them. Major Smith has managed transport and is sitting in his jeep watching the weary Marines go by. He will suggest to his CO that the unit needs time to refit before further action.

Pete has arranged for Milt to tend to the pub for him as Sylvia has the day off from the hospital and Pete has planned a day for them to be together. They stroll through the park and talk about things. He thinks that life has been as unpredictable as one could imagine as far as he's concerned. He never would've thought that the Pirates would end up leading to his being married. Sylvia is also lost in thought as she enjoys being with Pete so much. She feels that no harm can come to her when he's around. The whole world has gone crazy and they have this peaceful day together.

North Atlantic convoy ONS-169 was attacked by a wolf pack. Over the course of 2 days 17 ships will be sunk and 2 U-boats will pay the price.

Mandalay was attacked by 23 X Blenheim, 39 X Liberator, 56 X B-25C and 62 X P-38G. The Japanese put up 32 X Zero, 9 X Jack and 4 X Tony to oppose the raid which tore through them. Total Japanese plane loses in the air and on the ground were placed at 32 X Zero, 12 X Jack, 6 X Tony and 2 X Dinah. The base had heavy damage and ground troops sustained heavy casualties. Allied loses were a Blenheim, a Liberator and 17 P-38G destroyed while a Blenheim, a Liberator, a B-25C and 9 X P-38G were damaged. These are the kind of results which will enable the Allies to gain supremacy in the air in this area.

Gull Force Battalion was hit from the air again and it sustained light casualties and damaged a Helen. Later some Bettys appeared are dumped their bombs wide of the target, causing no casualties and getting 2 planes damaged.

The USA 25th Division attacked the Japanese troops in the jungles near Koumac, inflicting very heavy casualties while American loses were extremely light. In his report MGen CL Mullins, CO of the 25th, states that Japanese resistance is light, scattered and futile. He goes on to say that they will not give up the fight and when the Japanese run out of ammo they use the bayonet.

Kweiyang sustained it's daily dose of Japanese bombs and had moderate damage and very light casualties. No Japanese planes were damaged. The Nationalists are complaining to Washington that they need to have better planes if they are to continue to fight against the Japanese. The outdated Russian plane types are no match for what they face and lack the range needed to do battle. Washington has provided some B-25Js and informs the Chinese that fighters are in tight supply at the moment and as soon as possible planes will be sent to help them. This answer does little to placate the Chinese, but they know better than to bite the hand that feeds them.

Passing through the Line Islands the convoy has so far had a quiet journey with only false sonar contacts. Phil would be much more relaxed if there was some air cover and ASW aircraft with them, but the USN has other priorities. Later Phil is speaking to the Chief and they are discussing how Benham is holding up. Their ship is scheduled to undergo a refit upon returning to Pearl, but they know that the demands of the service come first.

Still idling away at Noumea the men of the Palawan are both happy to have time ashore and restless to get to sea again. Some of them talk of the aborted Japanese attempt to take the island and they want to get out before a second try is made. They've heard rumors about fighting around Koumac and they've seen some of the men of the 1st Marines. The Marines aren't talking, but they look like hell.

Dave is busy fixing a master cylinder so that the brakes on the car that he's fixing will work. Normally he'd order a new part, but if and when it would arrive make it an option that is out of the question. Dave wonders how farmers and other businesses that are important to the war effort manage to keep things running when the military gets dibs on everything.

The commander of VMF-222 is the exited recipient of news that they will be embarking on the next convoy bound for Pearl Harbor. It's expected that they will leave within the next 2 weeks. The men are granted weekend passes and are reminded to behave themselves and to keep their noses clean. They will be informed of their departure once they return. Stick is glad to be able to leave the base, but not happy at all that he's still the only pilot in the squadron not to have logged any time in a Corsair. As the men pile on a bus bound for San Francisco one of them yells, “Watch out for our fragile deck bound lad. Stick are you sure that it's OK for you to join us?” The men roar with laughter and tease him mercilessly as the bus departs the main gate of the base.

The Germans evacuated Vyazma today.

Allied planes struck at the 65th Brigade again inflicting moderate loses and all of the planes departed unscathed. A mere 19 minutes later another air raid on the 65th Brigade took a toll thought to have been moderate. Once again the 25th Division attacked the Japanese with both sides having light casualties.

Gull Force Battalion was attacked by 6 X Betty and sustained moderate casualties. The Japanese retired without being damaged.

Stick wobbles his way back into the bar after spending time hugging the porcelain queen in a less than clean men's room. “Here he is,” says one of the pilots, “Our poor Stick has no luck with planes or drinking. I wonder how he is with the ladies?” The 4 other men of VMF-222 there share the laugh.

Stick slurs his response, “I can out fly most of you and it wasn’t my fault that a worn out engine quit on me. As to drinking,” he doesn't finish as re staggers back to the bathroom.

No contacts of any kind were reported today and Phil is busy reading signals from Pearl. No activity of any kind is expected in the area of his convoy. That's not very comforting, he thinks. Benham's crew isn't happy with their trailing position on the convoy as it's a known fact that those at the end of the line are the ones to get picked off. Phil overhears a couple of the lookouts discussing this and the one says, “I'll bet ya that we get hit before this mission is over if we don't get away from being back here.”

“I'll take that bet,” says Phil. “If you lose and we die I won't have to pay up so what the hell.” The men share a smile and Phil continues, “We have a radar set that'll spot things before you do and sonar can pick up subs miles away so things aren't as bad as you'd think. Besides who would want to bag a tin can when there are juicy AKs and TKs plodding along?” As Phil leaves he hears the men cheerfully saying that he's right and they they don't sound nearly as grim as before.

Slim and his machine gun crew are now a well oiled machine. The division is almost back up to full strength, though so many of the faces are new. The men can't help but wonder where they will go next. Gunny stops by and asks Slim if there's anything that they need. As Slim starts to answer Gunny cuts him off saying, “I'd say by the grin on your face you're about to ask for something that the Corps can't provide for you. When we get off this island you can hunt it down yourself.” He claps Slim on the back, winks and walks off.

The 65th Brigade was attacked by Allied planes and casualties were moderate. All aircraft departed unharmed. Ten minutes later 202 Allied heavy bombers dumped their loads on the hapless Japanese causing very heavy loses. All of the planes headed back to their base without taking any damage.

The base commander at Kweiyang is fuming after yet another unopposed raid on his installation did moderate damage. Though casualties were negligible and a few Nicks were damaged by ground fire he is demanding fighter protection. The response is that there are no planes to send that can stand up to his attackers.

Ichang was raided by 26 X B-25J flown by Chinese pilots. They were opposed by 6 X Tony and though the raid did light damage to the base itself the Japanese had 2 X Helen, and 2 X Jack destroyed on the ground while 2 X Tony were damaged. The bombers departed without being damaged. This is sure to be a morale builder for the Chinese pilots. Now it remains to be seen what the Japanese response will be to this raid.

VMF-222 is loading onto an AK. Destination Pearl Harbor. The excitement of the men of the squadron is high and 2LT Robert Irvine is no exception, though he's got what he knows is the world's worst hangover. One of the ship's crew asks him if he's ever been to sea before and when Stick answers no the response is quick, “You'll feel much worse when you're hanging over the rail. A word to the wise is get into an upwind position from all the other men.” The sailor walks off with a chuckle.

Palawan still sits idly in Noumea's harbor awaiting orders. The crew seems intent on drinking the island dry, but so far have managed to stay out of trouble. Red is still resisting the idea of sinking any money into land here. “Cookie, we decided to buy land in Hawaii and we've done that. Why can't we just buy more there when we return? I'd rather keep my investment in areas where Uncle Sam is in control, not some foreign government. I just don't trust them and besides the treatment we've gotten so far here has not been good. I don't like their give me your money and go attitude.” Cookie nods and agrees as it's hard to argue with Red when he's right.

Stalin in in a rage as the Germans have shifted over to the offensive and have thrown back his army. Nobody dares to say anything to him when he gets like this.

“OK, then it's settled that we move the troops in June, with or without heavy USN participation,” says FDR and then he hangs up the phone. The die has been cast and there'll be no going back.

Today the Germans retook Kharkov and the Ghetto there was liquidated.

Combat

The 25th Division attacked the Japanese near Koumac in an effort to secure the area. They inflicted moderate loses on the Japanese and sustained light casualties themselves, but still the enemy stubbornly manages to find the will to fight on.

At Palembang a TK ran into a mine and was observed to have been on fire as a result.

Kweiyang was hit for light damage and no casualties. The Japanese planes departed unharmed.

The convoy that is forming in SF harbor is amazing to the men of VMF-222. Most of them had never even seen an ocean except for in the movies before and now there are so many ships. Stick is feeling fine, but he still is dying to get to fly his new bird.

Dave is beginning to surprise himself as he has just finished rebuilding a starter for a Hudson. He admires his work, the car itself and wonders if he'll ever own a vehicle other than his truck. Sandy brings him his lunch and comments on how handy he's getting.

Phil stands on Benham's bridge sweeping the horizon with his binoculars. It's an old habit that's hard to be rid of. He has radar and men straining their eyes while on lookout duty and yet he just is compelled to add 2 more eyes. The convoy is making good time as it continues to slowly eat up the great distances of the Pacific.

Ed is getting antsy and he wants to get back into action, but the shipyards are overloaded with work and he'd swear that the Pentagon is changing plans for the next operation. He doesn't miss the Pentagon or the White House, just knowing what's going on.

“You wouldn't believe how deadly he is,” says a man in Gunny's platoon. “Slim with a machine gun is like the angel of death. I'm just glad he's one of us and not them.” The men have to much time on their hands and nothing to do.

“Yes sir, Mr. President. I certainly will.” George C Marshall turns back to the other officers in the room and informs them that it's all but done. “The Soviets are opening up a few of their bases for us to use. The secret will be in getting into position before the Japanese discover what's afoot.” Everybody is pleased with this as it's a commonly held view that the Japanese forces are already stretched about as far as they can go. Now they go back to the planning for a reshuffling of the troops in Australia and seeing what they can afford to add there.

Interesting. The allies gained only one VP -- but the Japanese actually lost a few.

VP for bases depends on supply to the bases... they can vary several hundred VP in a day sometimes.

I have also noticed the strange fluctuations in the VPs. I do have plans that will cause a large swing in my favor if all goes well.

The game continues to run approximately 3 months ahead of this tale.

Combat

An IJN PC located mines at Palembang.

Allied ground forces attacked the Japanese troops near Koumac and took a little more ground while inflicting light loses and suffering very light casualties of their own. Allied commanders are wondering what it takes to eliminate the stubborn Japanese resistance.

The expected response against Chungking happened today as 78 X Helen, 17 X Jack, 33 X Tojo, 12 X Tony and 5 X Dinah came calling. 21 Chinese pilots bravely challenged the Japanese in their I-16c aircraft. The battle was a brutal affair and the outcome was 14 X Helen damaged, a Jack downed, 3 X Tojo destroyed with another damaged, a Tony was shot down and another was damaged while a Dinah was also shot up. The Chinese lost 17 X I-16c and 6 X B-25J destroyed on the ground while the base suffered moderate damage and ground troops sustained light casualties. The Nationalist Chinese are now screaming for better fighters with which to protect themselves.

Kweiyang was hit again from the air and sustained light damage and no casualties. Reports claim that a couple of Helens were damaged by ground fire.

Benham's charges near the first of their destinations where supplies will be delivered, Upolu and Pago Pago. A tranquil night was spent and the day brought no unwanted surprises. Phil is well rested and his paper work is up to date. He's managed to find time to work on fitness reports for the ship's officers and decides to take a tour of the ship. The crew members greet him as he enters their areas. Phil has managed to be a well liked exec of the Benham. He's been firm, but fair, consistent and even handed. The thing the men most like about him is that he brings them home safely. Convoy duty is a truly dull assignment and yet with so many helpless ships relying on their escorts he'd have it no other way.

Red has been cornered by a new crew member who insists that he be told the tale of the Capillo's sole survivor. Red doesn't like thinking of the sinking, let alone talking about it, but the man is persistent. With a sigh Red tells him that they were fleeing the Japanese and hadn't gotten far from Manila when the ship was torpedoed. “Before I knew what had happened I was in the water. Luckily for me the Tarpon, a USN sub, spotted and picked me up and here I am.” The man expected more, but that's it as Red calls Lucky and says, “See ya later,” as he leaves to take the dog for a walk.

The 1st Marines are getting much needed rest, hot meals, new weapons and new uniforms. The old ones were rotting right off of the troops as the jungle is proving to be as deadly an adversary as the Japanese or even worse.

Convoy HX-229 was attacked by a wolf pack. Over the next 3 days it will lose 12 ships.

Convoy SC-122 was attacked by U-boats and over the next 4 days it will lose 11 ships while sinking 1 U-boat.

Combat

The 65th Brigade was attacked by planes and sustained moderate loses. All of the Allied craft left unharmed. At the same time the 25th Division's artillery shelled the Japanese troops near Koumac inflicting what were believed to have been moderate casualties.

The Japanese conducted a bombardment attack on Sian inflicting moderate loses on the Chinese defenders.

The SS Pike attacked and hit a PC with 2 torpedoes 43 miles off of Gili Gili, immediately sinking the small vessel. The other escorts dropped depth charges on the Pike doing light systems damage and a few sprung valves were leaking. The sub will continue on her mission of mining the approaches to Gili Gili.

IJN MSWs were busy sweeping a mine field at Palembang.

With pressure being exerted on Sian the Chinese began shifting troops. The cities of Kungchang, Lanchow and Sining are watching a large Japanese force advance their way. The Chinese commanders never expected to put up more than a token fight for these cities and now it appears that they will be lost in the very near future. Sian, on the other hand will be reinforced and is expected to hold.

Phil expects his convoy to begin delivery of supplies in two days at Pago-Pago and Upolu before moving on to other ports of call. There have been a few problems with the AKs keeping station, but other than that it's been an uneventful cruise. He spots another DD appearing on the horizon as it sprints back into position after chasing down a false contact. Phil wonders how Bill is doing and if he's in line for a command of his own soon.

San Francisco's harbor is choked with ships preparing to depart with the tools of war. Warships begin to appear and the men of VMF-222 start a pool as to where they'll end up. Slim takes Lunganville and says it'll be a long time before they get to stretch their legs again.

Pete is having a cup of tea when the mystery man from Allied Intel appears and asks if they can talk. The two men discuss the war and the need for information and finally Pete is asked if he'd be willing to accept an assignment that would take him away from home for an “extended period of time.”

“What the hell does extended mean?” asks Pete.

“If I knew I'd tell you, but I don't and I won't lie to you about it,” says the man. “The only thing I can suggest is that you come with me tomorrow to HQs and we'll try to learn more about this together. Deal?”

Pete says OK and they leave it at that and start to discuss the impending baseball season and the various teams chances minus so many of their better know players, who are in the military now. Pete tells himself that Sylvia isn't going to like this at all and he decides not to tell her anything until he knows what's going on.

The SS Steelhead attacked and hit a TK with a torpedo 193 miles SW of Dadjangas despite the escort of 4 X DD. The sub silently glided away without being detected, leaving the TK burning. The Steelhead tried, but failed hours later to finish off the TK.

The SS Hake attacked and torpedoed a TK 247 miles SW Takao. The sub escaped without detection. Hake shadowed the TK while she reloaded and slipped into a favorable attack position. A surface attack yielded 2 torpedo hits and 3 shell hits on the TK which had been abandoned by the escorts.

Kweiyang was subjected to an air raid today that inflicted moderate damage and light casualties. A Nick was damaged as was a Helen with another one going down in flames.

Chungking was raided again by Japanese planes which did no damage. A Jack was downed and a Dinah damaged at the cost of a I-16c destroyed.

36 X Helen appeared over Kungchang and did light damage to the base. Six of the bombers were reportedly damaged.

49 X Liberator VI, 47 X B-24D and 21 X P-38D hit Pagan's resource center for moderate damage. The CAP of 14 X Tony bravely tried to defend against the attack and lost 10 planes for their efforts while no Allied aircraft were damaged in the attack.

SS Trigger attacked a couple of AKs 41 miles from Osaka, but failed to score a hit.

The 65th Brigade was attacked by 16 X SBD, 36 X A-20G, 40 X B-17E, 79 X F4F-4 and 6 X P-40E. Casualties were thought to have been heavy and all of the planes departed safely.

The Japanese shelling of Sian continued today causing light casualties. The Chinese high command doesn't believe that the Japanese forces at Sian are strong enough to do anything other than occupy the defender's attentions.

Milt is taking care of the pub while Pete is silently sitting and listening to why his navigation skills are needed. Finally the man finishes and Pete just shakes his head and says, “You mean to tell me that I'm the only navigator that you can find? I know there are plenty of good ones out there and that my skills are nothing special.”

“Quite the contrary,” the man behind the desk replies, “You come very highly spoken of. Will you do it?”

“I'll think about it and once I've decided I'll speak with my wife,” says Pete.

“No, you must not speak to anyone about this. We'll give you a story that will cover you being away,” the man replies.

“Half way through a month and the coffee supply is dwindling to fast again,” moans Dave as they eat breakfast. Sandy is heading into town today as one of her friends parents will be giving her a ride. She hopes to pick up some letters from Bill and a few other items that they need.

“Dad I'll start drinking tea if it'll make you happy,” she says to Dave. He smiles at her and shakes his head.

The convoy nears the first of it's destinations and the activity level among the escorts increases as it's believed that IJN subs lurk near the bases, not the open ocean. Phil has completed some paper work and is relaxing after a long day.

The word has been passed that they will depart on the 20th. The men of VMF-222 are already antsy and the ship won't even depart for another 2 days. A few complain as to why they were boarded so long before departure and one of the crew gives them their answer, “Security, the powers that be don't trust your big mouths.”

Combat

IJN PGs encountered a mine field at Fergusson Island

Another day, another attack on Kweiyang that caused very light damage and no casualties. A Dinah was thought to have been damaged.

An air attack on Chungking by 15 X Jack, 9 X Tony and a Dinah was met by 6 X I-16c. The Dinah was damaged and 3 X I-16c were also damaged.

Wyndham was hit by 60 X P-38G and 15 X B-24D and they were met by 6 X Zero, 20 X Tojo and 30 X Tony. It was reported that a Zero was observed to have gone down, 9 X Tojo were destroyed and 10 X Tony were shot down with another one damaged. 16 X P-38G were lost and 5 others damaged and 2 B-24D were downed while 11 others were damaged. The base sustained light damage.

The 65th Brigade was hit by 75 X F4F-4, 14 X SBD, 18 X P-40E, 36 X A-20G and 40 X B-17E who collectively inflicted heavy loses on the Japanese while sustaining no damage to any of the planes. The American infantry launched yet another attack on the Japanese who had moderate loses to none for the men of the 25th . Still the Japanese manage to cling to the ever shrinking amount of real estate that they control despite the overwhelming odds and starvation.

Japanese fighters lazily circled over Kungchang and departed after a while of not being challenged.

Stick and a couple of the others have decided that to make the time go and to stay in reasonable shape they will jog around the deck of the ship as long as it's allowed. They work up a sweat and as they go they look out at the assembled convoy that is scheduled to depart soon. One of the says, “With all of this how can we lose the war?”

The more Pete thinks about the job as a navigator the more he becomes afraid of telling Sylvia about it. That evening she asks him what's bothering him and when he says nothing she doesn't accept that. She told him that it's obvious that there's something on his mind and she wants to know. He finally relents and says, “I have been requested to join an intelligence gathering group as a navigator. I don't know what to do or say to you or them. On the one hand I don't feel that I want to be apart from you while on the other I have a need to fight the Japanese. I can't just sit and watch others fighting for us and besides I owe them for this.” He points to his missing arm and slumps down in his chair. “I love you more than anything or anyone, but I need to do this. If I don't do this I don't know if I'll be able to live with myself in the future. In spite of all of this I will not do it if you say no.” With that he sits and silently stares at Sylvia.

“In that case I guess that I'll just have to be like so many other wives who have husbands fighting in this war.” Tears well up in her eyes and she sits on his lap and hold him tightly. She hates herself for what she's done, but knows that there could be no other answer. “I love you too,” she says.

In a strongly worded note Stalin has expressed his dismay at the Japanese advance on Communist Chinese held areas. A military response and basing rights for the Americans have been mentioned to Tokyo as possible responses to this aggression on Moscow's friend, Mao.

FDR was notified by the Soviets of their communication with Tokyo regards the new Japanese offensive in China. Washington views this as another small step in getting the Russians involved against Japan. “At the very least let's get those basing rights and put some heavy bombers in there and paste the Japanese on their home turf,” says an Army Air Corps general.

The British 8th Army attacked the Mareth line today.

Combat

Chungking was hit by Japanese aircraft, but there was no opposition offered so the Japanese fighters departed. A lone Dinah was shot down.

Japanese fighters appeared over Lanchow, but they departed after a while when it was clear that there would be no Chinese aircraft foolhardy enough to engage them.

Akyab was attacked by 35 X Zero, 34 X Jack, 12 X Tojo, 13 X Tony and a lone Dinah. 14 X Spitfire met them and destroyed a Zero, 4 X Jack, a Tojo and 2 X Tony (1 other damaged) in return for 7 X Spits going down.

The artillery shells rained down on Chinese positions around Sian inflicting heavy casualties.

The Japanese forces near Koumac were hit again today and they lost more ground and had light loses while the American troops had negligible casualties.

The reply from Tokyo was swift and not to Stalin's liking. The Soviets were told to make no further demands as the Japanese will no longer bow to them. Tokyo also suggested that Stalin maintain his focus on Europe and not to meddle where he has no right. The Japanese further stated that if the Soviets wanted a war the Japanese were ready to fight. The effect is immediately felt as Stalin explodes, “Contact Washington immediately and tell them whatever basing they require we will be more than happy to assist them with. In return we still want the second front and more aircraft from them. If the Japanese want a fight we will give it to them, but not at this moment. Continue to build up our formations and prepare for a war in the east.”

A huge convoy departs San Francisco and VMF-222 is aboard a ship that is part of it. The men of the squadron are excited that they are going overseas to fight the Japanese. They are even more exited to know where they will be based as everybody wants to be the one to win the pool. They can not manage to get even a hint as to where they are going other than “Pearl Harbor.”

A smaller, yet vital convoy busily disgorges the tools of war as quickly as possible. The escorts run search patterns in the area to insure the safety of the AKs as there isn't a harbor to shelter them. Phil calmly stands a watch on the bridge.

Pete sits down across from the man and says, “OK, I'm in.” He gets assurances that Sylvia and their business will be taken care of in his absence. The where and when is something that he will be informed of.

The 2nd Marines continue to cool their heels waiting for the Corps to decide what to do with them. In the meantime it's R&R when not training. Gunny is pleased with the platoon and Slim is good with his mg section.

The planning is done and now all Ed needs are his sailing orders. His old gals are ready to deal with the Japanese and he wants another crack at Wake. This will be no raid and the US forces will be there to stay. The question is when will the IJN decide that it must contest an attack.

Plans are being finalized in the Pentagon for troops to move to their first base that the Soviets have Oked for the USA to use. The operation will be a 2 stage affair, but once the 2nd stage has been accomplished life for the Japanese will take on new complications.

Meanwhile in the Kremlin Stalin questions his generals about how to deal with the expected Japanese response.

Combat

A Japanese AK hit a mine at Goodenough Island and was seen to be burning in the predawn hours.

Kweiyang was hit by 30 X Tojo, 23 X Tony, 32 X Helen and 3 X Dinah. 2 X Helen were reported damaged and the base had light damage and casualties were also light.

Mandalay was attacked by 20 X Blenheim, 51 X Liberator, 29 X P-38G and 5 X F-5A and were pounced on by 27 X Zero, 28 X Jack, 6 X Tojo and 6 X Tony. The wild fight in the air resulted in 10 X Zero downed (4 damaged), 10 X Jack destroyed (9 damaged), 6 X Tojo shot down, a Tony damaged and a Dinah damaged on the ground while the Allies suffered 2 X Blenheim damaged, 2 X Liberator destroyed (7 damaged) and 18 X P-38G downed. The damage to the base was thought to have been moderate and ground loses were moderate also.

An air raid on Akyab by 21 X Zero, 53 X Betty, 73 X Tony and 24 X Helen was opposed by 15 X Spitfire. A Zero was destroyed, 4 X Betty were damaged, 5 X Tony downed (1 damaged) and a Helen was shot down (3 more were damaged). None of the Spits returned to base and the damage inflicted was moderate with light loses to the troops.

An air attack on Tulagi by 97 X B-17E and 129 X B-24D was greeted by 18 X Zero and 24 X Jack. 2 Zero were destroyed (10 damaged) and 6 X Jack were downed (12 damaged) while the Allied loses were 21 X B-17E shot down (30 damaged) and 17 X B-24D destroyed (29 damaged). The port was lightly damaged.

The 65th Brigade was hammered by Allied planes for moderate loses with all of the planes departing safely. The Allied troops attacked and again took more territory and inflicted moderate loses on the Japanese while Allied loses were very light. Will these Japanese never fold?

At Sian the Japanese continued to lob artillery shells at the Chinese defenders and inflicted heavy loses on them.

Stick has spent the better part of the cruise at the rail. He can't ever remember being this sick. He wants to die and what's worse is that he has plenty of company. The ship's crew enjoys seeing the cocky Marines humbled like this.

Phil's charges continue on their way to yet another stop to disgorge the stuff wars are fought with. Benham prosecuted a couple of sonar contacts today, but they both were either false or they were given the slip.

Sylvia and Pete enjoy one of their walks in the park and around town together. Today there is little banter between them as they're both lost in thought. Both of them are preoccupied with the same thing and neither of them wants to talk about it.

Ed and his ship captains hold a meeting in which he tells them that whatever their vessels need get or do it now as Operation Revenge is almost upon them. The meeting then turns to the tactics that will be used in prosecuting their primary mission of flattening the defenses. They are ready to go, but the orders aren't issued yet. One of the captains grumbles, “If this is going to be the pace of the war I figure that we'll win when my grandson gets to Tokyo.” The other skippers share the laugh.

Two big events are rapidly approaching. It's almost time for Carnival here in Brazil. It's the world's biggest party and to say that the country shuts down for it is an understatement. The other event is that the AAR, thanks to you guys, is almost up to 20K hits. To celebrate both of these I think that you should grab your passports, get a visa and join me for a beer or two.

Combat

The mine field at Fergusson Island was reportedly being swept by 4 X MSWs.

Kweiyang was attacked again and had moderate damage and light casualties. A Nick, 4 X Helen and a Dinah were supposed to have been damaged by ground fire.

Over Port Moresby 4 X Jack, 19 X Zero and 16 X Tony opposed 48 X B-17E and 64 X B-24D. 3 X Jack, 11 X Zero and 4 X Tony were destroyed while 9 more Tonys were damaged. The large bombers sustained 5 X B-17E damaged and 6 X B-24D destroyed with another 25 damaged. The base was reported to have been heavily damaged and ground troops were thought to have sustained moderated casualties.

The 8th Ind. Brigade, 47 miles N of Kungchang was attacked by 9 X SB-2c and sustained very light casualties while all of the Chinese planes departed with no damage.

The 65th Brigade was attacked from the air and had heavy loses, no Allied planes were damaged. Another Allied attack at Koumac witnessed the Japanese sustain heavy loses while the Americans had two wounded soldiers. The Japanese still stubbornly cling to their hopeless defense.

SS Snook attacked and hit an APD with a fish doing heavy damage and setting it afire 51 miles NE of Aparri. The TF's other two APDs countered and the Snook sustained damage.

About 46 miles N of Kungchang the IJA attacked the Chinese positions forcing them to retreat with heavy loses. It was reported that the Japanese sustained heavy casualties also.

At Sian the Japanese artillery bombardment continued causing moderate Chinese loses.

The Tarpon loads mines and will proceed to sow her cargo at Kiriwina Island and then she'll go to Auckland for a refit.

The convoy heads for Midway to unload returning to Pearl and Bill wonders if command makes others feel the way he does in direct proportion to the responsibility involved. I'd never want to be the president, he thinks.

Phil is lying in his bunk reading an old magazine as sleep just won't come to him. He knows that this far out the possibility of a marauding IJN force is a very real possibility.

Sandy is looking forward to the spring thaw. She's had enough of the winter and wants to resume her hikes. More than anything else though she wants to see Bill.

“Why do we just hang around here instead of doing something?” asks one of the men of the Palawan. Nobody has told them that they'll be needed for the biggest operation of the PTO soon enough.

After Tokyo's response upset Stalin another note from the Japanese made him even angrier. The Japanese citing increased tensions stated that their fighters would now be flying CAPs over their bases. “So that's the game they want to play?” sneers Stalin, “Remind them of our agreement that after their mistaken attack on us they agreed to allow our recon flights. Inform them that we have all intentions of standing by our agreements and that the shooting down of an unarmed recon plane would be an act of aggression that we could not ignore.”

The Germans retook Belgorod today.

Combat

The SS Snook attacked 2 X APD about 63 miles NE of Aparri and hit one of them with a torpedo that set it on fire. It didn't take long before the vessel went turtle and then slipped beneath the waves. The Snook quietly moved away unharmed and reloaded her bow torpedo tubes while continuing to stalk the undamaged APD. Finally she managed to achieve a firing solution and attacked, but to no avail. As the Snook was departing the area an ASW TF appeared and subjected her to a ferocious depth charge attack that lasted for hours. When the attack finally ended and the damage control reports came into the control room it was determined that they had sustained moderately heavy damage to the systems and the aft torpedo room was flooded and sealed off.

The SS Hake attacked a small convoy in the middle of the South China Sea and managed to hit an AK with a torpedo that caused fires to rage.

At Mandalay 16 X Blenheim, 24 X Liberator VI and 16 X B-24D appeared, but the escorts never joined them as planned. The Japanese had 26 X Zero, 32 X Jack, 4 X Tojo and 6 X Tony aloft to oppose the bombers. The Allied gunners accounted for a Zero shot down (10 damaged), 2 X Jack destroyed (15 damaged), a Tojo damaged and 3 X Tony damaged. At the cost of 13 X Blenheim destroyed, 11 X Liberator VI shot down (2 damaged) and 6 X B-24D downed (4 damaged) they managed to inflict light damage on the base and light casualties to the ground troops. Somebody's head will roll for this mess.

An air attack on Port Moresby by 39 X B-17E, 31 X B-24D and 4 X Catalina I was met by 12 X Zero, 3 X Jack, 9 X Tony. The bombers fought their way through the fighters managing to down 3 X Zero (6 damaged), 2 X Tony (5 damaged) and damaging 3 X Jack while they suffered 2 X B-17E destroyed (11 damaged), 2 X B-24D shot down (15 damaged) and a Catalina was also damaged. Damage to the base was thought to have been moderate and casualties to the troops thee were also moderate.

At Sian the IJA big guns continued to pound the Chinese causing heavy casualties. The Chinese are beginning to think that Sian might be in trouble and orders are given to troops formations in the Chungking area to prepare to move.

At Koumac another attack by the 25th Division's troops inflicted heavy loses on the Japanese, but still they stubbornly cling to a small area and continue the fight. The Americans had very light casualties.

The boys of VMF-222 are finally finding their sea legs and the brave one are eating and holding it down. Stick is scared to tempt fate and decides to wait until tomorrow. For now he's content just to lie in his bunk in this weakened condition.

Plodding along towards Suva Phil stands on the Benham's bridge wondering how Phil is doing aboard the O'Bannon. Later Phil is busily handling a problem between two of the crew that erupted into a fistfight. Both men have been put on report and have been warned that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. “Are the two of you crazy?” asks Phil, “The Japs could pop up at any time and you want to fight each other? If I see or hear of the slightest discord between the two of you between now and the end of this cruise so help me I'll make sure that you wish you'd never been born. Now get back to your duties.” Phil then speaks with their section chief and tells him exactly what he expects in the future. Benham's skipper makes a mental note that it's time for Phil to have his own command and he promises himself that he'll push for that to happen the first chance he gets.

Operation Sunshine is on again and the planners dust it off and make a few changes to it. The question is where will the shipping come from and can a fast one be pulled on the Japanese.

Combat

Mandalay was visited by 49 X P-38G, but no Japanese fighters were aloft to challenge them.

Akyab was hit by 30 X Zero, 32 X Jack, 5 X Tojo, 11 X Tony and a Dinah. 13 X Spitfire challenged them and the Allies lost 6 of the Spits while accounting for a downed Zero, 3 X Tojo destroyed and 2 X Tony shot down. Despite the overwhelming odds against them the pilots of the Spits acquitted themselves well.

The 65th Brigade was attacked by 46 X F4F-4, 16 X SBD, 17 X P-40E, 45 X A-20G and 31 X B-17E. The Japanese troops sustained moderate loses while the Allied planes left their favorite milk run unharmed. The Allied artillery bombardment, later in the day in the Koumac area, resulted in moderate Japanese loses.

The continuing bombardment of Sian caused moderate Chinese casualties. This is starting to look more and more like a test of wills as the Japanese continue to pound the defenders and the Chinese leadership decides to send more troops.

Dave stares at the jar that holds the remaining coffee, knowing that it'll never make it to the end of the month. “Damned war,” he mutters. Sandy heard him and nods in agreement, but she feels this way for different reasons.

“Mr. Doe hasn't been around lately? I wonder what he's up to,” says Sylvia as she works on the books. Pete sits on the other side of the desk sipping on a hot cup of tea and just shrugs his shoulders. “I'm actually in no hurry to see him return as I'm afraid he'll be taking you away from me,” she says. Pete just looks at her and gives her a smile.

The convoy carrying VMF-222 to Pearl Harbor continues unmolested on it's way. The men are dying to know where the Corps is going to send them, but the only answer they ever get is that they'll find out when the time is right.

At a briefing FDR is told that if all goes well Operation King will jump off in early July, about the same time Operation Sunshine will be in full swing.

The Allies are feeling the squeeze when it comes to APs for amphibious operations. All other types of ships are in abundance or are going to be soon.

Stalin is having misgivings about granting the Americans basing rights since the Germans have managed to turn the table on him lately. His generals assure him that the Red Army will be on the move again soon enough and the Germans will be sent reeling all the way back to Berlin. This cheers Uncle Joe up and he asks about the new plane types and if any can be spared to face the Japanese. He's convinced that when the Japanese find out what he's done there will be another front for the Soviet Army to fight on.
