Could someone explain to me why a person, even drunk as a skunk, is arrested for being a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone else.

apparently, those that we hire to "protect and serve" are also there to save us from ourselves..."arrest" seems like the wrong term, but may be legally correct...

'Aguilera was arrested because she appeared too drunk to care for herself and had no driver to take her home, McSweeney said.

The law allows deputies to detain intoxicated people for their own welfare until they sober up but there is no intention to prosecute them, he said.

"You're sitting in a car drunk. You have every legal right to be there but when we come across you we say you can't drive and we're not going to put you on the sidewalk," he explained.'

Surely they can call a cab?

The city might be liable if she's abducted, raped, murdered or parcelled out for parts. By calling a cab the cop is basically deputizing an unknown individual to provide care and transport for an individual without capacity.

I didnt realize that US police provided that "service". In Russia they have these "cooling off" facilities especially dedicated to hosing down violent or unruly drunks and letting the rest sleep it off until their wives come and get 'em. This is a new one on me, however.

it appears that moscow has "gone to the dogs"...

There've always been strays in Russian cities. Until very recently, Russians had treated dogs like dogs, not like Paris Hilton's pampered Chihuahua. There are stories that during the Leningrad blockade stray dogs and cats provided supplemental calories but I'm sure they didnt last very long. This new "liberalism" is a bit new however, especially since I dont recall hearing any widespread campaigns that urged dog owners to spay or neuter.

Oh dear.....

no comment...

I used to work there and was suprized that they chose Demarest of all places for the pilot program. It is the last place I would expect students of opposite sexes to live together if you get my drift. It was full of artists and hippie types and you old time Threadians know my love of hippies.

There were quite a few girls in my school I would have loved to bunk with.

Extra Monday tithe......

I've done some research on this subject and held a five-hour seminar to discuss my findings. I've found no evidence that today is, as you call it, an "Extra Monday". All evidence points towards a normal Tuesday. Next Monday will, if higher powers so admit and we have no alien invasions, occur not earlier than 7th of March.

Your research is based on appeals to a higher power? Not terribly academic.

Oh yes it is. I swung my rubber chicken three times around my head. If that isn't academic surety, I don't know what is.

There's your problem right there. You have to swing the bleeding headless corpse of a real chicken for it to work. And it does....the blood on my walls clearly indicate that it is an Extra Monday.

Meh ... not you too ... guess I have to let go of my innate tactfulness () to tell both you and the Chickendude that using live chickens is soooo 20th century - you have to keep yourself a jour with the technological development.

So, rubber chicken says no Extra Monday.

Socialist!

i guess the lack of widespread campaigns explains where the millions went that were supposedly to be used for the problem...but there's no graft in moscow, is there?

Nope. Especially not where the former mayor was involved. Nope. None. No sir.

Sorry to hear you have Gout Nik. I've pretty much had to give up all alcohol plus take a pill everyday. When I feel that achy tingle start in my toe I drink about six ounces 100% Black Cherry Juice. The juice might just work because I think it does. Still, I and many other Gout sufferers swear by it. Best of luck.

Morning guys.

I wish you a very fine morning, including the sun+so on!

My knee hurt somewhat, maybe the turn-around after Kiri Kaeschi yesterday is the reason.

They have me on Indeomethacin for the inflammation. My Uric Acid levels are just over the high-normal. I'm hoping that with a minor diet change i can avoid a future incident. It does not run in my family so i'm guessing that means at least i don't have a pre-disposition to it. I"m hoping to be one of those one time sufferers.

One of the five secretaries in my department is currently on maternity leave and set to "go" in two weeks. Today, she came by to visit; can we guess how quickly I found an excuse to be somewhere away from the office, once those five women got together?

Make no mistake, I like babies. But five women chattering on and on and on and on and on and on about pregnancy and childbirth? No.
