When logic, reward and self-interest fail as teaching tools the Catholic school trifecta of fear, shame and guilt comes to the fore.

none of this would have occurred if cell phones weren't involved...if i was in charge, cell phones would be banned from the classroom...and all the students would be required to refer to me as "your highness" or "your eminence"...and i would refer to myself in the third person...wait...sometimes i already do that...

It carries on into the business world where the overwhelming trend in HR is 'check boxes' for degrees, certifications, etc. regardless of the individuals skills. I recall an HR rep telling me that a job applicant 'had unix' because they had completed a course in unix (the job was for a unix systems manager at a level requiring advanced knowledge to tune for performance and so on).

All that brain-dead rules succeed in giving us is brain-dead people. "Got stupid?"

Lets be fair. Most HR personnel I've met have not been the brightest bulbs. Most of them were certainly not qualified to judge me on my merits for the position in question. All they actually knew how to do was check boxes and pretend to comply with the bazzilion idiotic rules they had foisted on them.

Ah, but I am referring to idiots who seek to enforce their check box upon the hiring process. In others words, the foisters themselves.

It would be me or the kid at that point. I would not last long as a teacher at any level in a public school, as I would not put up with crap from the brats or their loser parents.

I was browsing government jobs and came across this gem.....

http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.aspx?JobID=96686228&JobTitle=Club+Manager&q=analysis&where=&x=0&y=0&brd=3876&vw=b&FedEmp=N&FedPub=Y&pg=12&re=3&AVSDM=2011-02-09+02%3a34%3a00

BTW, am I missing something or does the US Government seem to think that there are PhDs lying on every corner (or does GS-11 mean something other than that)?

Gs-11 refers to pay scale not education requirements.

That post doesn't require any formal schooling.

In the USA there is a push to use very strong words in job postings and resumes. It resembles the post on unix as with all the external applicants it has become common to claim "experience" in anything you have seen or someone else on a project did.... Being honest handicapps you (but I and some others do it anyway). I have a rule of thumb that if you are not significantly more attractive in an interview when you answer my specific questions than you are on paper then it is probably a lie.

It is great to see the look in peoples eyes during interviews when you ask specifically what they did on a project not what the project accomplished...

I can tell ya right now that that is a tried and true formula for getting kids to turn out decent. Sure, it can be abused by unjust auhorities, and has been.

But in the majority of cases:

1) Kids do need to fear the consequences of their actions
2) They oughta feel shame for the **** they pull
3) They ARE freaking guilty, and they'd better learn why

This makes me angry.

Just par for the course, Dude. Golly, just watch anything on TV and you're inundated with "Have you been annoyed? Then call our attorneys and get Money!".

As a society, we're not only in the pooper, but somebody already pulled the flush cord. So don't get mad, it only raises your blood pressure to no purpose. There's nothing you can do no matter how you feel about it. It's a simple matter of mathematics. The social inertia of 290 million cretins, following the latest judas goat demagogue (who just promises crap to get the power so he/she can get that Beemer and a house on the beach) vs, what? few million thoughtful folks? Hah!

Sanity ain't gonna happen in a Democracy Mouse. The Greeks knew that 3000 years ago. Critias the Elder (or maybe the Younger, I forget) described what is happening now, book, chapter and verse. There is absolutely nothing that can be done except to bunker down and let nature take it's course.

Thanks, that makes my outlook on life much brighter, especially considering how highly I value your opinion on things.

I don't need to need this at 2 am. I am slipping into depression here.

I agree. I do the interviewing for our firm and it is amazing what you can find out when meeting with people face to face.

Then I dont understand why they would require that a GS-11 or private sector equivalent be a minimum requirement for applying. Maybe the coffee hasnt kicked in yet.

I have a busy few days ahead of me.  Leaving in a couple hours for Maryland and my Poppy's funeral.  Tomorrow afternoon I'll leave directly from the cemetery, drive home to pick up Alex and switch bags, and immediately drive down to Wilmington for his hockey league championship tournament.  We're staying at a hotel right on the beach.

I'll probably get a chance to check in from time to time, but in case I don't, have a great weekend, Brothers.
