To all IJN surface combat commanders:

If you are escorting an invasion fleet and you recieve the order "Do not retire" that means you "DO NOT FREAKING RETIRE".

Under any circumstances.

I don't care if you have expended all of the ammunition for your main batteries. I don't care if all you have to face the enemy TF is cold gyoza and empty Kirin bottles, you will place yourself between the enemy and the unarmed transports.

I expect any officer or seaman who hears a TF commander give a retirement order under these circumstances to immediately terminate that officer's command by any means neccessary. Failure to do so will result in immediate execution.

I dunno man. That screening TF kept retiring after every engagement. I know that the 3rd time I sent them back they were out of everything but torpedoes but they certainly could absorb what little the Allies had left a lot better than the APs could.

A surface combat TF even got into my carriers and the DDs threw themselves in front of the carriers while i was trying to "convince" the 4 BBs and their escorts to get back into the fight.

Issue Nambus and swords, grapple with them buggers and "Away boarding party!"

There's going to be hell to pay when that TF gets back to port. The commander is going to be put in charge of a one AG task force that I'm sending to assault Brisbane;)

If I may suggest :

Keep your carrier TF one hex away from target base but have LRCAP over invasion TFs; thus avoiding your Carrier TF being mualed by enemy SA TF. Simultaneously, have a replenishment TF along with the Transport and Surface Action TFs (perhaps 2 SA TFs) all hitting the beaches at the same time. Maybe have a cautious Surface Action TF leader?

Good luck!

With LR CAP over transports, what's flying CAP over your carriers?:)

I forgot to add that you would need to have LRCAP over your carries too - basically 2 LRCAP groups over your carrier TF & invasion fleet hexes. Of course they would be very tired over a few days- you would need plenty of squadrons - leave the TBD & TBFs behind at Lae and pack more fighters on the carriers.

IMHO.

I find it hard to believe than any commander would stay on station if he was out of ammo. They wouldn't turn back after one battle "just because" though.

They certainly didn't have enough ammo but they hadn't gone to "slide lock" yet because even the third time I sent them back they still mauled the remnants of the Allied surface TFs. The first 2 engagements sent the BBs and CAs down. The last time was just a few DDs and a CL or CLAA or two.

Besides I've seen ship captains do a lot stupider things in this game than stay on station when they're short on ammo for their main guns;)
