I see in one of the new AARs that people have figured out how to capture Riga on Turn 1, port bomb Kuressare, and naval move infantry divisions into Riga.

It is an interesting question whether the Germans could physically have done so IRL in the time alloted, but I have a question as to whether they would have even tried.

Specifically, I think they would have been flying out of range of their air cover (especially around the entrance to the Gulf of Riga), and into an area with siginificant SU air assets. Does the game engine provide for interdiction attacks of naval transport? If not, I think naval transport into forward areas is a little too powerful of a tool. Moreover, at the very least, the German player would be forced to move some fighter bases up into the Baltics and use those fighters to provide CAP for the convoy (which would prevent their use for other missions).

What do you all think?

Writing special rules to cover things that might happen 2-3 times in a 200+ turn game does not seem worth the effort.

If one player feels strongly enough that it ruins the game for him, then have a house rule before you start playing.

I would gladly drop it if an opponent thought it was unfair, but in reality it's not that big an advantage.

Turn 1, you can move 2 Infantry Divisions about 6-8 hexes further than they could walk. That is certainly nice, but it's not like they are in Talinin.

Turn 2, you can move 2 more just a couple hexs or s0 further than they could walk (since Riga is about 18 hexes from the border, and about 14 from what your railhead should be by then)

By the time Turn 4 comes, you probably have a RR to Riga, so it's irrelevant from that point forward

Guys-

Thanks for the responses. I agree that it is not a big issue in the scheme of things -- more just my curiosity. In any event, it think there is a BF110 squadron that wouldbe in range without moving any airbases.

The interdiction question got me thinking though. Can rail moves be interdicted? If not, why not? I know that rail interdiction was a huge factor in the West, but I haven't looked into it on the East front to have an opinion.
