I played the original games quite much and recently joined the new BTR.
My current campaign is the big one (full '43 700 turns) as German. I'm in late February '44 now.

I am very confident that the Ta 152C is the solution for all my worries in daylight (great against fighters and against bombers) and I have the success in battle to afford its research because I keep B-17/-24 losses near their replacement rate with an exchange rate of about 3:1 kills overall. Thousands of adequate to good day and night fighters are still in my pool.

Night defence is the area where I am rather clueless (but thankfully Bomber Command is not very active). I inflict quite random damage on bomber streams (sometimes 2 kills against a 1,000 bomber raid, sometimes 70!).

What's a good night defence tactic/technique?
Send them at bomber streams, set up patrols over cities in their path? Assign groups individually to bomber groups?

I am also not sure about JG 300/301/302. Will the JG30Xs be changed to daylight fighter wings in May '44 as they were historically?

What's the best night fighter (development path)?
So far I converted to 88C-6 (painfully slow cruise speed) and use some 219A-2/R1 as well (not enough endurance & range).
110G-4/R7 is under-gunned without Schräge Musik and other 110 versions have no substantial advantage over the 88C-6.

88G and even the 388J still have a very low cruise speed, I often observe my 88C-6 NF groups chasing a bomber group without them catching up. I don't want to micromanage their flight paths for better interception.

154 is outright mediocre and has no good radar in stock version. It's underwhelming in comparison with its late arrival date (save for the one test unit).

The 262B - although in reality a fascinating idea for a day+night bomber destroyer - appears to be too short-legged and most importantly, I won't afford four engines per NF!

The 335A-6 looks like a nice answer to Mosquitos, but it'll arrive too late and is strangely under-gunned.

I wonder how I'm supposed to smash incoming 1,000 bomber streams at night!

----------------

It's a pity that this game didn't get the huge sales it deserves and thus we don't get the patches we'd like to see. Many thumbnail images of aircraft types are terrible, some stats are wrong and the whole night fighter control system should be redesigned to match the historical procedures more closely, including setting up searchlight and radar zones.

OMG, the Ta 15C is as great as I hoped! I got it on 1st March 44.

On 1st day of action it downed 14 recons, and it downed 7-9 in the next days each.
I could easily intercept half the recon intruders and keep my backyard (east of Ruhr area) clean once I converted all day fighter units to it. The Allies only get about six recon replacements per day!

My Understanding is that they will convert automatically if you have never manually onverted them. If you have, then yes, you will have to wait for the patch to be able to manually convert them.

I converted some from 109 to 190, does this already mean they won't become daylight fighters?

Damn, I should have stored these useless groups somewhere in the east.

They might convert, but I doubt it,as they have been converted to another type of plane.

Maybe they convert as long as they're still equipped with either of the two Wilde Sau fighters?

Anyway, my strategy pays off. I score regularly like 15-50 : 100-320 now, with a factor ten in KIA+MIA.
The Ta 152C are so great that I was able to observe about 80 P-51B kills on one day, with less than 5 Ta 152C lost against them. I have fighter groups with 40% experience 99 pilots. Pilots with a lesser experience than 70 are very rare, mosty only 2-4 per fighter group.
Conversion to Ta 152C will be complete by mid or late April 44. All is well in daylight.

Btw, is it possible to edit databases to solve the JG 30x problem?

Nope. There is no access to the database.

We can nly hope that the patch that is in the workshop will solve the problem of the JG30x not converting.
