let's say that i shoot enemy tank with my tank and % for hitting is 86% or even bigger, but i miss... even with all 3 shots, is this just bad luck? =)

atleast i get enemy vehicle wrecked when percents are around 18-50,

i have even missed 99% hit few times,

i'm not veteran player but what you think do i have really bad luck,

Heh, sometimes I get the feel of the higher %, the more difficult it is to hit. I frequently miss +60% shots, while nailing a 25%-er is no problem. :p

The game gives you the best hit % for all the weapons you are using. Meaning if you have four weapons one might be at a hit % of 25 and another might be at 50 and another might be at 75 you will only see a hit % at 75. The best way to view this is to see what you want to hit with. Shut the other weapons off then go and see what the hit % is for that one weapon. You might be supprised on what you see as a % to hit.
Also the hit % does not take into account things like terrain, weather your opponent is in cover, on a slope, or entrenched. This will always adjust your hit % down.

Hope this helps

As the weapon is firing it will give you a "true" hit percentage, with all things factored in I believe, because it shows these after doing the calculations but just before deciding the outcome.

heh

The game cheats is all. I don't know how many times I have fired with high % probs and miss but the op fire always seems to hit, lol.

You can always bump up your hit percentage in prefs until it seems 'fair'.
:D

For me, the Japs seem to always hit with one of their LMG's with 2 - 3 % chance :)

The game doesn't cheat, the fact of the matter is this...

Computers are not trully random, they can get close, but they always follow patterns, this is one of the reasons why computerized gambling is so controversial, because it can be rigged so that the pattern seems random, but isn't, and never allows a player to win.

This isn't of course what's happening, the game is just getting stuck on numbers usually (The way it hits, I think it pulls a number from 1-100, and if the hit% is higher than that, it counts it as a hit, otherwise it's a miss.)

Just dumb luck and lack of good possibilities for random number generators.

in this discussion i like to use an expression from Glorious Leader Vebber who once said its "just a roll of the dice" whether you get hits or misses.;) :D

If its not 100% then its not 100%, 99% meens you can miss, I have seen people who should have died in Desert Storm, some how they kept right on running( they were glad to have the 1%).

There is alway a chance, its no big deal, sometimes it sucks, like when Rbrunsman is kicking your @ss  :D :D , but those are the fortuns( misfortuns) of battle

Yes, but not till I get this ouiji board computer of minr back on line completely.....I had it up and it went AWOL....I'm back up tempoarily and now I'm trying to figure out why my memory (computer that is) has been sucked way down....Had game, MCNA, and MCLV installed when we played last and had 400+megs available....Now I only have game and MCLV (updated) and have less than 250Megs, it doesn't make sense. So I intend to play against AI tonight to see if game is slowed down, very strange, very strange, how did I pick up 200+Megs going from first arrangement to second setup????????Any comments from the forum will be looked into and happpily recieved. Hey I only have 2 Gbs to begin with and my hardware is picked to the bones now. I already have thinned out some of the game files ie; Chandla and MGN etc......oh well.  :(

Did you reformat the HDD and scan it for errors Chief?

I suggest running Scandisk.

My HDD once upon a time told me I always had 2 gigs available.

When I installed WaW I found out I had less than 400 left.

G_X: I reformatted the hard drive....but a scan disk may be in order now so I'll throw that in the hopper, I,m begginning to suspect the stereo sounds download may have changed things a bit also. I now have 350+ Mbs showing and atest game is plugging right along. I appreciate reply and will keep you posted. Gracios (spelling?):) :D

Any % is only valid over a large number of attempts. That is 50% does not mean if you miss this time, you will hit the next. It takes about 30 tries to become statistically valid.

I have had cases where I the AIP had certain % chance of hitting me (~30% IIRC) but when I replayed the turn it always made the hit. This shows that there can be some problems with the resolution of random die rolls in the game.

Chief which program are you relying on to give you available HD space?? I understand you had to reformat recently, there was a windows update a little while back that fixed issues about scandisk miss reporting HD size and space available. I would open my computer then right click on your HD and select proporties, this will give you a much more accurate reading, and also tell you if you might of created a partition on the drive during th reformat that you didn't know about. As for the stereo sound double check you didn't get a nested directory of sounds which will chew up alot of HD space and the download itself is 200mb in size also if you still have it residing on the HD somewhere.

The percentage displayed while targetting an enemy unit only considers:

Targetting value
Stabilizer value
Range Finder value
Range to target
Target Size
Target Speed (?)

and that the final results after firing are further based on:

Target Stance (Advance, Defend)
Terrain in the target hex
Target Orientation (Slope, Hull down, Side, Rear, etc)

I'm not clear on when Target Speed effects are calculated. It would be good to know if the displayed hit percentage included that factor.

If, one the other hand, Target Speed is Not taken into account before firing, it could have a substantial affect on the final outcome.

Anybody know for sure? :)

Gmenfan: I always read HD capacity from Comp>drive>properties so thats not the problem. Thanks for the possibility. As far as my original setup prior to reformat, (MCNA and LV) I now assume that I may never of installed the new sounds. (No nested sounds either by-the-way) so with LV and sounds the loss of 200 megs is quite possible. The game is functioning fine with 325 mbs free space. Thank you for replies. :) :)

I'm involved (vaguely) in the TinyMUX programming community (an old text-based game server/engine). I'll tell you right away that finding the "perfect" random number generator is a Holy Grail of sorts. One can "seed" the generator from the timer (a rather common manner), or from a number of other things. The more things you use, the more random it gets (sort of), but it also takes more time. This increased time CAN improve randomness! I remember some old programming experiments where I could usually deduce the die rolls before they showed up... simply because the bloody computer was so old that I could guess about where in the timer it kept landing (basically it was picking a predictable series of numbers based on the regularity of the processing). The same program on a terribly faster computer would spit out all 30 random numbers the same or very close together... because it apparently was using the same time or clsoe times for many of them.

So basically yeah, the random numbers may be a bit less random than you think (though probably more than you think now :P). On the other hand, don't forget things like Warhead Value (or am I thinking splash damage?). Grenades almost always seem to kill at least one man, regardless of the hit %. Throw multiple units in the hex and you've got a bloodbath (which is why I always try to herd Bad Guys into one hex :D ).

In my experience, flame throwers seem to score kills a vast majority of the time, no matter what their 'to hit' %. Especially against 'soft' targets.

One unit that seems to be a 'hit' magnet is the German HT mounted 37 mm AA gun. Against the AI, most shots seem to score hits, in spite of 'to hit' % in the teens or below.
