Someone asked about the software tools that the team used to create things in PCO. There are several threads in the PCK forum about the tools used back then. There may be some helpful reading there but for now I will list the current preferred list.

Paint.Net freeware, graphic editing

Fragmotion low cost 3D modeling

audacity freeware, sound editing

The original work (PCOWS PCK) was done with 3DS MAX, then converted with Polytrans to Microsoft DirectX .x files and .dds graphic files. There are a whole bunch of numbers that you need to know to get things in the correct scale. Hopefully the other team members will chime in and post those numbers and the software that they work with.

The map maker, scenario editor, and random generators require Internet Explorer be installed. I comes with Windows. You do not have to use IE as your browser but the software uses bits that are installed by default with IE and the tools look for them in order to work.

.Net 4.0 will be required for PCO.

Map making is done in conjunction with google earth, you need to have it installed.

When the tools were made, it was IE7. Then people screamed that they still used IE6 and it was fixed. Then IE8 came along and broke things again. Again it was fixed.

I haven't tried IE9 yet.

Have you used the Map Editing software for PCO?

I've alway thought that the rubber bands were too big. I'm using Fragmotion, loaded up the green rubberband.x file, scaled it down 50%, but when I try to save it, it only allows .ugh format.

So how do I save it in the .x format for the game?

You must export it to the .x format, not save it, however the export function is present only in a licensed copy of fM.

I got it working w/the trial version. This is from the Kharkov release, not Ostfront.

I use The GIMP, it has a more step curve but it is more powerful.

Only tested w/the green ones! That's great; I always thought those damn rubber bands were too thick! And I have the free Fragmotion, because it keeps bugging me to purchase it!

In PCO there are actually more rubberbands. They use a barberpole setup now where the different stripings indicate the movement capability of the squads/tanks in the platoon.

So there will be more to mod!

Thanks

Yeah, I guess I should point out that I don't have Ostfront, so any pics I put up I will remind others that this isn't from the new game.

*edit-the Kharkov forum is pretty much ignored now that everyone waiting for PzC:O

Here's my idea for a mod when Ostfront comes out: varying sizes for the rubber bands that don't clutter up the whole screen. Again, this is from PCK not PCO.

Sounds like a good idea HintJ. I'll look forward to seeing these when PCO comes out!

thanks

I like those smaller rubber bands.

I used Fragmotion (for modelling and animation work) and Photoshop CS4/5 for the houses, infantry models, terrain and trees that I made.
