Hi all,

I'm just glad that when I served we knew who the bad guys were. Although reading this book the Soviets were always playing catch up and Mao really wanted a nuclear war.

Darn, ain't it the truth. Know quite a few people who wax nostalgic about the "old days". One knew what the threat was and its level of capability, and who were the generals, and how they normally thought, and how this, and who that, and what tfo.

Oh, but life was so much simpler then;
We're younger than that now.

Like the man says, war is an extension of politics. So what are the politics? Whatever one may think of Brother Quadafi, he has put Libyan crude on the world market according to its stats. Libyan crude is light/sweet, probably the lightest/sweetest that is available on the world market. This is significant way beyond the bbl production figures.

So, on the one hand, there's this serious jerk pimple who gets his backdoor people to bomb airliners, but who plays according to the rules for resource flow. On the other hand, there's the rebels, who may or may not be democratic, but who might have a skoosh of Shia in their mix. Neither side is likely to exhibit any sort of political/social thought or consequence. One must think about what a successful revolution will involve.

On a purely national interest scale, I'm for the guy who keeps the light/sweet flowing. The Libyan thing is between Lucifer and Beelzebub. Your choice of evils.

Looks like the Gadaffi forces haven't got things all their own way.....

From ABC News site: Video: Fighter jet shot down over Benghazi

Most likely a shoulder launched SAM....

It was weird: that Mirage was already in a spin when it caught fire, right after the pilot ejected. I'm not sure it was actually shot down.

It was not Mirage F1... it was MiG-23... believe me...

Leo "Apollo11"

That's what I saw in the video.

Libyan cease fire called.  This time they really, really mean it.  Honestly, no crossed fingers or take-backs.

Yep...

Leo "Apollo11"

P.S.
BTW, one tidbit... earlier this evening I was watching "Sky News HD" and they were reporting from Tripoli. They saw some AAA firing randomly into the sky (tracers over night sky) and concluded that Libya still has strong Air Defense system in place... oh my... who pays those reporters / commentators....

Civilians.

They have a different opinion of strong defences and heavy combat. I daresay that those of you out there with infantry training have a different opinion to mine of those things as well.

Well, if somebody is pointed a twin-barrel 23mm anti-aircraft gun at me, then I'd call that a pretty strong opponent...

Bah. Any calibre less than 40mm is for wimps.

ETA: I started my career in the Army Air Defense. Hence I've had a long love affair with ms. Bofors

I USED to like you Per!

Believe it or not the place I was was designed to defend from attack over Hungary by Soviet Union!

BTW, it was one of the very first placed that USA / NATO hit in 1999 in Serbia/Yugoslavia (back in the 1980's the Yugoslavia was still federal republic and it was mandatory to serve in non-birth republic - thus I got to serve in Serbia)... that time the aircraft did come from Hungary as predicted but they were not Russian...

Also I remember back in the 1980's that even high ranking officers in our base had no knowledge of "Wild Weasel" missions and anti-radiation missiles... I was appalled by the fact that schooled officers were so ignorant... it was like they never heard of Vietnam and Arab-Israeli wars...

No plans on redeployment (to Italy possibly) Martin?

Sorry mate, "no comment" is all I can say on the subject. Sure you'll understand. Although I can probably get away with showing one pic (from 120 or so) from my part in Operation Ellamy...

I know exactly where that is !

Luckily that you don't have GPS data written in EXIF in your JPEG (BTW, the original EXIF is not removed after photo editing)...

I have no idea what that means

All new photo cameras, mobile phones etc. save so called meta-data in JPG when picture is taken.

This data contains the name of camera, time, various timings of camera etc.

If device has GPS the GPS data is also written there.

When you edit picture (and you used Paint.NET) that original EXIF data is not erased - it is preserved and only editing data is added (in your case the name of pain program you used to shrink picture and write some stuff on it)!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif

Leo "Apollo11"

I did not know that . Very interesting, thanks.

We are currently in the market for a fulltime administrative assistant. I posted addvertisements in both Monster.com and Career Builders.com. Within a week we received almost 600 resumes ! And of course the vast majority of them did not match the job description. Oh well.

So are you saying I should not have submitted my resume, listing all of my software QA and customer support experience?

Should I have listed my measurements instead?

Well, I did kinda suppose that being that pasty white automatically disqualified one from a) having rhythm and b) being able to jump very well, but reggae?

DELL Computers (sales and service) SUCKS!!!

My employer buys Dells exclusively. Yes they suck.

Yeah, mine does too... after today, i am going to see if i can influence them not to. That should cost Dell a few hundred K/year if i can. Doubtful, but i'll give it a shot.

I've always had a dell and can't complain. My wife is an apple lover....She wants an all in one apple that we can run windows and her mac crap on....should I take the plunge?

You want a desktop, not a laptop, right? I'd get an iMac...starts at $1200. If you hunt around, you might find a refurbished one for less.

The alternative would be a Mac mini. Those are nice little machines too.
