2 enemy destroyers attempted to disrupt the loading of our assault force at Waingapoe today. A strange affair; We got a heavy cruiser TF there for protection, yet the transports retreated from enemy surface threat but no engagements took place. During daylight the 2 enemy destroyers were found and sunk by our LBA. Later on 52 enemy 4Es attacked shipping, but only 3 attacked the now exposed transports in the channel. The rest went after our cruiser TF and scored a single bomb hit that caused 3 sys damage. Enemy sweepers and bombers claimed some CAP fighters. I'm now in the process of re-distributing our Waingape troops and newly arrived reinforcements. The threat in Burma may be a diversion but a couple of reserve divisions will go to Rangoon. - A large force will go to Singapore and others have already unloaded at Medan. Most of the remaining will go to Soerabaja for R&R while the rest goes to defensive positions in the SRA. Despite having 5 AA Regiments enemy losses to flak are relatively small. Even 18 Hurries strafing gets away with it (16 damaged ac but none shot down). Not interested in engaging in air battles in Burma before we have rebuilt our fighter pools and replaced the now outdated Tojos with Franks and Tonys. Not a crack unit, actually performing training for some of the pilots. Performance was still sterling when facing enemy fighters in an escort role. I always try to have at least one elite pilot in my front line fighter wings but this is becoming more difficult as we loose pilots while receiving new air wings.
