In the world of Physics/Comsmology: someone has come up with an idea lining gravity to thermodynamics, as well as linking the whole thing to string theory and quantum mechanics.

According to this new theory, gravity is a special kind of entropy. Starting with the ideas of energy, entropy and tempature, the author (Verlinde) derives Newton's laws, and then extends them to further derive the General Theory of Relativity.

Several other physicists (Easson, Framton, and nobel laureate Smoot) have gotten on board and pointed out that the concept of entropic gravity also removes the need for "dark energy", the mysterious stuff that is said to cause accelerating expansion of the universe. "Their calculated acceleration macthes the observed acceleration as inferred by its effect on the relative brightness of supernova observations".

So, maybe a whole new unified theory of everything is in the offing...

Of course, this is all preliminary and still not accepted by most physicists yet.

Gratuitous to launch a missile that's probably worth more than the target but we seem to like doing that.

i am guessing it would more likely have been a Hellfire... taking a hit from a Harpoon probably would have done in a Libyan coast guard vessel pretty quickly without chances for "limping".

EDIT: a 12 meter patrol boat would probably be matchsticks had it taken a direct or even near hit from a Harpoon.

ANOTHER EDIT: P-3 can carry Mavericks - no mention of Hellfire capability in what i looked up... also can carry Zuni rockets.

I have in my mind a picture of a Libyan coast guard 12 meter patrol boat and I'm still thinking either a hellfire or maverick would be worth more than it. That it wasn't engaged until sunk is mindboggling.

Of course when y'all start talking about 12 meter boats, I picture something completely different:

Similar in length, anyway. And heck, for all we know the Libyans are using sails on their patrol boats!

One of the things that I love about nature is that our deeper understandings of today are just our shallower misunderstandings of tomorrow!

...hmmm...those were quite large...is this any better?

Where is that Kwik E ?
Looks like some sweet place in Mexico, except for the Belgian beer menu.

hyatt regency, aruba...guilty on the belgian beer pic...it was a nice little sidewalk place across the street from the hotel...the Corsendonk was my favorite, and of course, it took two or three tries to make that decision...the plan was to have one of each from the menu, but alas, my constitution is not up to snuff for european alcohol content in beers......<hic>

According to The Virginian Pilot

"A Navy P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, an Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and the guided-missile destroyer [Barry] engaged the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Vittoria and two smaller crafts after confirmed reports that the vessels were firing indiscriminately on merchant ships in the port.

The Orion fired at the Vittoria with AGM-65F Maverick missiles, forcing it to be beached. The Thunderbolt fired upon the smaller craft using its 30mm GAU-8/ Avenger cannon, destroying one and forcing the other to be abandoned."

12 meter boat? heck...why not just drop a stick of sonobouys on it? i can't confirm any of the ordnance...in my day, they only let us carry really big torps and depth charges......probably the reason the P-3 "missed" was because there was a HR against 4E naval attacks from less than 10k...

Are the Libyans flying American flags from their patrol craft too? That's got to be confusing for their adversaries!

So, maybe a whole new unified theory of everything is in the offing...

Of course, this is all preliminary and still not accepted by most physicists yet.

If most physicists disagree with it, wouldn't it be more appropriate to call it a "non-unifying" theory? Or just call a spade a spade: it's a new "divisive theory".

European alcohol content in general is not overly high. Higher than the horse piss we call mass-produced beer over here. Belgian beers tend to be much higher test however. The exception would be the mass-produced Stella and Hoegaarden ones, both of which are decent beers, though nothing like a real Belgian ale.

Man a Chimay Blue sure sounds good right now.......

Well, if it works out, it will eventually unify things... you usually have to wait for the "old guard" to die off, though.

To a point you often do. IIRC Einstein was uncomfortable with Quantum mechanics to some degree. Another of the early 20th century greats (forget which one) didn't buy it at all.

On the other side, today in the popular media Dark Energy is talked about as though those who have not bought into to it are quacks and (you guessed it!) deniers!

He was seemingly very uncomfortable with it... thus his quote "God does not play dice with the Universe"... (no religious discussion intended).

But, he did try to reconcile his theories with Quantum Mechanics (to his credit). Alas, he failed.

Love to see the source of that claim. Cats are desert creatures. Turkey has nothing similar.
