Here a simple mod i made for myself, wasnt too happy with cartoonish and music themes, so i made a different ones. The only things i did is change the music themes (note: some of them are from GalCivII and some from youtube). I have change the portaits for all races except one and included the Galactopedia as well. I also change the race to different family, but the ship sets still the samn as well race's name. They all look okay to me.

So if you install this, it will copy over your previous setups. If you dont like it, you would have to reinstall the game. Forgot you will need the expansion as well. Infact the expansion is much better and worth it.

Here the game files...
http://www.gamefront.com/files/20209867/Distant_Worlds_rar
unzip them under Matrix Games/Distant Worlds folder

Optional music themes...
http://www.gamefront.com/files/20209894/Music_rar
unzip them under Matrix Games/Distant Worlds/Sounds/Music folder

I will add some screenshots later on.

enjoy
Rising

Awesome, some of this is going straight in to my combined mod directory for playing with :)

Not sure if you might want to have any of these for options as I can see a lot of other cultural references.

Nice one, RS. I love some of those race images. Some of them, however, I can't get out of my head as their modern counterparts like the Predator and Queen Alien. I'd rather see these race names changed to suit, but that's just me. Good stuff though and it's a nice change from the cartoon images.

The ambient music is great. Wish there was more of it. You can add to this though.

Good job with the galactopedia files. It would be great if we could put them in the customization folder, so we don't have to overwrite the originals. I won't be using them because of this, which is a shame, but maybe soon we'll be able to add them to the mod file structure.

My advice for naming the mod, is keep it simple. Try going to thesaurus.com and typing in a word you feel describes the mod, then look at the synonyms and decide if one of them sounds suitable. For example, 'dark', 'ambient' might yield some interesting results.

I'm pretty sure that's how movie legend George Lucas came up with the name, 'The Phantom Menace'.

Anyway, good job. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks, well if you guys want me to change the famous alien or predator to original names i can do it. Want to see how others would like this game by improving it some more. Im sure the mod will get better some how down the roads, im gonna play it some, i havent had a chance to play it yet lol.

Enjoy the game and new ideas will come to you as you play.

Been having a lot of fun with this tonight, so much better atmosphere with these images. I've just stuck it in the customisation folder though rather than updating game files.

Troop images based on these would be pretty easy to do in the majority of cases.
Personally I'm happy imagining these aren't the races from the movies, the images are quite fitting in most cases and most films don't actually have a real name for them races anyway :)

Hi, very interesting mod! I too dont really like the cartoonish race pictures, it breaks a bit the imperial space empire immersion. I recommend you to look for famous scifi video game pictures, like halo, sw. Those kind of games usualy have high quality images, not too cartoonish and well designed alien faces.

Yeah, that guy on the bottom, that one that looks like a refugee from a horror movie about mutant bugs...
He looks like someone I really would want to meet with all the firepower I could bring to bare... You know howitzers, atom bombs, death stars.
Nice job... I like them all but the bottom one is creepy!

<== what I would meet him with first.

<== what I would do if the tank did not work!

That's a Xenomorph, TJ. Have you never seen the sci-fi classic Alien?

You are forgiven, TJ, as long as you promise to watch the movie at some point  :- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/

And after that, you must watch Aliens, its more action orentated sequel :- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/

But don't watch any of the others in the series, horrible butchery pieces on what was a masterpiece.

Tj you lucky thing! Genre defying excellence from Ridley Scott and James Cameron. You've heard of them right? :-)
Watch them when you get a chance, you will be pleased you did.

Sweet Savannah, has everyone heard about this movie?

Is this a horror movie? The Johnny Quest monsters give me the creeps... okay not really, but I am not much of a fan of horror movies, which is what this think looks like it came from...

It's probably the best horror movie that ever existed yes, at least the first one is. By todays standards it's not very gory, 1 scene is a little nasty but would be considered tame now. I imagine it's still scary for those who haven't watched before.

The sequel is an action movie with horror movie elements. The same difference as Terminator to Terminator 2 (not a coincidence James Cameron also). The second one, Aliens, has relatively few scares, it's more of a tense action film and could almost definitely be enjoyed without watching the horror movie original.

And to answer your question everyone my age (32) and above has seen these movies, not sure about younger :)

I've got The Thing on DVD and on bluray! I love it.

When you're watching Alien, TJ. Just imagine you're on a large freighter in the DW universe.
