Anyone ever seen an AAMG on a tank fire at a plane? I've just realised that I haven't. HTs, trucks, flak all do but not, seemingly, anything tank-like.

Is this an OOB issue or something more fundamental?

Thanks :)

Civilian q here; don't most AFV mounted AA MGs require the unit commander to come out in the open to fire them? Not exactly the place I'd want to be, if an enemy aircraft was firing at me with its own weapons!

You should really read the manual - 9/23/2002 12:18:59 AM

It provides so many answers to such a range of questions and gives you little secrets on how the game works. Things like a tank can only fire its AAMG if it is not buttoned, and a tank ussually buttons up as soon as an aircraft starts to fire on it. Since all the AAMG's are on the top of the tank and require someone to be half out of the tank to fire it. :)

Also things like which aircraft to purchase that do not have to make experience checks to keep coming back for another round of fireing after it drops its main ordenance. and how it is much easier for infantry to sneak up on tanks if they are buttoned versus ready. Little things like that that can make a whole lot of difference.

Where in the manual does it list the aircraft that are available for more than one strafe? I'd like that list!

Basically any aircraft that has ammo left after the first strafe can return if it's undamaged. Just that this is more likely to the 'dedicated ground attack aircraft'. And you can find them by looking at the 'top' armour box in the OOB editor..if there's a '1' then you just found one such plane :)

Also if you search via weapons encyclopedia...there's that top down pic of the plane at the lower right corner..there are two numbers in it's right..the latter in parenthesis will tell you the same.

I have seen Stuarts fire at attacking aircraft, but not at ones which are targetting them.

You gave my little secrete away. It was more fun to make them go searching. But I will tease a little more. Yes in the manual it does give a listing of specific aircraft that is "dedicated ground attack aircraft"

Well I have read the manual and am aware of the things mentioned. What I'm talking about is how I have never seen any un-targetted tank fire at a plane from any distance, ever. All other AA weaps will have a go from halfway across the map if they have LoS. Just seems strange.

Well...halftracks, recons jeeps and such usually have an AA weapon as their primary weapon while a tank has it as secondary weapon.
Now unless the target is 3 hexes away or closer the unit has to pass an experience check to see if it fires seconday weapon(s). This probably applies to aerial targets as well and might explain why tanks so rarely fire at aircrafts, as the target is often further away.

How experienced does a unit have to be to figure out that shooting more things at the enemy makes them go away faster?

Actually only experienced crew has time to perform weapons fire with all guns...Imagine a 4 man crew in a tank with 4 weapons. Who's gonna drive? And watch the surroundings..use the radio? Load the main gun? At close range it's assumed that enemy is already rushing at you so crew just blazes away in desperation, ignoring everything else.

Voriax

ps: also it's just about pointless to fire light weapons at long ranges..waste of ammo that you may need later on.

I've seen tank AAMG's fire at planes. The tanks were on the egress-end of the plane's run. They didn't do anything to the plane...

But the HQ unit armed only with some French SMG fired...

and hit...

and damaged the plane!! Elan indeed!!

When I was testing the Ju87g1 in the game to see how well it shot up tanks, I first tested it against 10 t34's clustered around a gold spot then 10 t70's again around the same gold spot (to allow the planes to attack turn after turn).

The tanks did shoot up the planes, they didn't shoot any down but did manage to wound a few.

From my testing I determined that the g1 model Ju87 was worthless vs medium or heavy armor. Against light armor it could take out more vehicles than planes commited, but 10 Ju87g could only kill 3 of 10 t34 when attacking from their front. They did a little better when strafing from the rear of the tank, but even then how often are they going to find tanks stationary at a gold spot waiting to be shot up.

Come to think of it, neither of those tanks has an aamg, so just what did they fire at the planes?
thanks, John.
