Hi all, I wanted to share some thoughts, about the private sector of the game, I just had while playing. These are reflections with game improvement .

Have you ever noticed that sometimes your automated escorts or frigates, escorts and protects private ships or bases? Why is that?? Logically those traders would buy defensive ships and hire pilots, no? Or even your obsolete ships could be transferred to the private sector, at a price ofc.

Now that the private sector is armed, then there should be the possibility of privateer-ing! yar yar yarg! Send out your "innocent" private militia against your enemies, if they strike back then they are the bad guys! Why do they kill civilians? Because they shot first! :D

Also what happened to the "strength in number" doctrine? All I see is lone traders wandering the galaxy for the best financial opportunity...

The private sector represents the traders and private ventures of your population, they should be able to order the construction of their own trading bases and their own mining/gas facility. I am sure a wealthy space capitalist would build a planetary space port if he sees enough cash potential. Now this brings up the possibility of property seizure, the takeover of private property like a space port from the state and theres the potential to give compensations or not!

Another thing very essential to the depiction of galactic trading is the inclusion of space smugglers! They are the ones who keep the trade lines open between enemy empires, but they only make profit to the private trading consortium. AND they are the ones who supply the pirate bases! (They should appear as independent traders for game purposes.) You could try to hunt them but then you get bad rep for being repressive on free trade.

Well there goes my thoughts for ya. Take it and use it as you like! :)

If this happened in real life, then we wouldn't have had to send all of those military ships off of the coast of Africa. Traders can not afford protection - it's too expensive for them.

And traders don't travel in large numbers. They are always just one ship going on it's route. Their trading schedules are too hectic to travel in numbers.

Interesting ideas. Not sure how it could be worked into the game, but interesting none-the-less

ofc they got "some" form of protection at the east coast of Africa due to heavy pirate activity, but no way you can say that the navy escorting trade ships all over the world.

Maybe because there is heavy pirate activity only there, while in DW, pirates can strike anywhere ? And even other civilisations can attack your ships, anytime they want.

Problem is that sea traders are now virtually extinct. What goes through suez and off the horn of africa are ships hired by big companies to make long transport jobs, the ships are in responsible of nothing in case of attack or something. And actually there ARE private defense companies operating in east africa, but just not enough to cover everything.
Also people who make trading ventures usually HAVE some starting money, you dont just go around with your rubber boat and hope to make $.

You are mistaking modern transports (or cargo) with traders!
Sure there are fixed trade routes for lone cargo for things like fuel supply lines, but the closest thing to depict space trading would be 16-18 century trading ventures: An European trader hire transport and escort ships, then they all go to the americas/africa/south east asia and then they all come back to sell his load in European ports. Thats how it should be in DW.

"We dont have iron here lets go over there its safe and cheap.. oh wait its cheaper there but theres enemies, ill just hire escort mercs!"
