I've seen most of the SciFi series and movies both TV, theatre etc.

There has got to be some more out there worth watching these days or older ones I've missed?

What's your favorites besides the most obvious, whatever that means?

I tend to like the series stuff as I can watch and hopefully follow it for awhile when I really get bored...

Seen all the Star Trek related stuff once or more at least. Star Wars, Aliens, IDD, Starship Troopers, Both BG series, B5 series, SG1 series.

Hmmm is SG Atlantis & Universe any good? Watched the first couple of both of these and they didn't real take off with me yet...

Any recommendations?

My "must see" Sci-Fi list goes something like this:

NOTE: They are not in any order so don't get any ideas.

- District 9
- 5th Element. Super Green! Also, one of the most epic intros what I've seen in movies.
Plus: You WILL love this scene: ZF-1
- Futurama
- Ghost in the Shell (the movie. Deus Ex owes a lot to this and the Matrix)
- Akira (the movie. May be getting the manga too at some point)
- Babylon 5 (No-brainer)
- The Last Starfighter. Cult-classic. Also, has one of the greatest ships in SciFi history: The mighty Gunstar!



Beat that!

- Close encounters of the third kind (Got nightmares of the "kid-abduction" scene. Still gives me the chills)
- Alien trilogy (3 is enjoyable but 4 is only bearable)
- Robocop (the original)
- Terminator 1&2 (3th was enjoyable. "You have been terminated" *BOOOOOOOOM* )
- Minority Report
- Starship Troopers (people who don't "get" this movie need to go to a doctor)
- Independence Day (The best B scfi-movie there is)
- Matrix (the original movie. Still one of the best cyperpunk movies)
- Star Wars (the original trilogy, but new ones are quite enjoyable too. Especially the second and third episode. Well, apart from emo-Anakin)
- Blade Runner
- Moon (really different SciFi movie)

I think these will do for now.

- Escape from New York
- The Thing
- Johnny Mnemonic
- eXistenZ
- Scanners

District 9 was one of the best sci-fi films of the decade - SEE IT!

I however disagree with the Alien franchise - #1 and #2 were good - but everything after that was rubbish.

Status: offline 		Havent seen Firefly mentioned yet, it is like a western in space. Cancelled after one season and a movie.

My favorite anime above all others including Macross, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed are the Gundam series (except SD) Unicorn is the latest. Just finished the 00 series which was excellent.

Status: offline 		If you want something to keep you busy for a while, find the fan-subtitled space opera anime Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Something like 100+ episodes, I've watched about 25 and it's phenomenal.

Firefly (already mentioned, outstanding series, awful loss when it was cancelled)
Farscape (Made for tv Sci-fi series, quite good and relatively unknown)
Babylon 5

Movies:

But damn, the Legend of the Galactic Heroes looks mighty interesting.

I've see there is like 10k episodes of "Dr. Who" on Netflicks, is it any good? A friend advised me a while back to not indulge here though as it's too much and not along my lines... I like my SciFi realistic and believable for the most part, which I know sounds a bit bizzare considering...

I did watch the Firefly stuff, thought that was pretty decent, sucked that it was so short lived!

Farscape, started to watch a while back and didn't get too far with it, does it get better?

BB5, saw the whole think and thought it was pretty good overall.

Equilibrium, have not seen it so will do on that one.

Postman, saw it thought it was fair.

Status: offline 		I just thought of one not mentioned, how about "Event Horizon"?

I saw that in the theatre when it came out, was not what I expected and it scared my kids!

Cool space ship scenes though not enough, cool idea for SciFi that turned more into a horror flick I guess...LOL!

I liked Atlantis. It wasn't perfect and had some poor character development. Ronon Dex should have been an awesome character, but they just didn't seem to have any ideas for him. In general though it was a good series. Not as good as SG-1 of course.

Universe, I watched the first season and part of season 2 before I lost interest. I found it pretty boring. It has the dark, gritiness of BSG as well as the imperfect/true to life characters, but it didn't have very good ideas to push the story along and keep me coming back each week. I might pick this up later if I feel like it.

Right now, I'm watching Star Trek: TOS season 3 (I'm always watching ST).

I've also started watching Dr Who from season 1. I'm onto season 2 now. It's got some great writing and stories. Very much enjoying this.

I've also just got my hands on the Firefly Bluray. I've now got this series on DVD, Bluray and I've got Serenity on Bluray. Awesome stuff. I still believe it'll be back one day.

here are some not so famous tv-shows I can recommend to you...

jericho... post apocalyptic setting, was cancelled early, but I really enjoyed it
space above and beyond... wing commander-esque, cancelled early, but definitely worth watching
roughnecks: starship troopers chronicles... cheesy CGI TV series, awful dialogues, but its watchable if you like the movie/book
aeon flux... great dystopian animated tv series
captain future... animated pulp series, not sure if it there is an english translation, but the hero of my childhood :)
hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy... great bbc series from the 80s
cowboy bebop... my all time favourite tv show
space battleship yamato... the japanese anime counterpart to star trek
earth 2... space colonization tv show, decent enough to watch
lexx the dark zone... like a dark version of hitchhikers guide, really great series
jeremiah... luke perry ist the main protagonist, hence it feels like beverly hills after the world went to hell :), but decent enough if you like post-apocalyptic stuff

and some newer movies you may have missed:

eden log
children of men
space odyssey: voyage to the planets, a docufiction where defying gravity stole its idea from
brave new world
the road
mutant chronicles
space truckers
dark city

and finally some must have seen classics, if you haven't already seen them:

stalker... one of my most favourite movies

Status: offline 		Whilst I love SG1 and the almost all the SG universe it does suffer from the same disease almost all sci-fi shows suffer from. It went on too long and had no clue where it was going, made new seasons just for the dollars.

All time favourite is B5 (although a couple of the movies were a little poor,) and it's so great because it had a defined story, someone with more than half a brain cell came up with real characters, and realistic events they care about. This meant you cared about the characters too, it also meant when you got to the end it didn't feel like just the next cliff hanger "oh I wonder if it's renewed for season XXXVII." Just a pity they dangled the carrot and got him to go ahead with crusade, the last B5 ep felt like the last chapter of any great novel, you still talked about it after reading but you always felt content the story was ended.

As for films someone mentioned "Moon" great film that shocked the hell out of me in the current market of "no plot fill with extra cgi" that comes out. Few others:
Dark City
Dune/Children of Dune (sci-fi tv versions only)
Mars Attacks (so many folk get their head vaporized its just unreal)
Monsters (think cloverfield with an actual plot)
Pitch black/Chronicles of Riddick
Splice (Species on acid)
Sunshine (still will argue with anyone to say its not amazing in everyway)
The Abyss
The Black Hole
The Fountain (up there with Sunshine)
Total Recall

For shame: I've got The Road in my shelf but haven't yet watched it!

Cowboy Bebob is one of those animes series I try to find from local netstores all the time. The funky theme is great stuff!

About the Firefly: I've never been a big fan of the series. My friend likes it a lot but I think it is decent.
To be honest, it's both underrated and overrated. Take your pick.

Farscape I watched for some time and liked it. It's kinda cheesy sometimes, but overall it's a great SciFI series.

ed wood is a legend, I don't know if there has ever been someone with more chuzpe than him!

space truckers, I think I just remember beacuse dennis hopper was in it, but iirc it's quite decent

oh, and be warned, the road is a very oppressive movie ;)

Status: offline 		I thought the 1984 Di Laurentis' Dune was a great film, but when asking some one who hasn't read the books, they don't get it. It had a terrible ending also that I prefer to think never happened.

I couldn't enjoy the TV miniseries, it was so badly done. Children of Dune, however, was great. If only they did the first one like that.

hal9000, good call on Cowboy Bebop. Brilliant series. Stalker, also, a film I loved.

Status: offline 		Not sure if anyone mentioned SG the initial movie (the one that started it all). That was a great one
If I wasn't a trekkie I might rate the SG series higher, I started to watch it because of Anderson...I totally loved MacGyver. All in all, the SG series is far better than many others and for me is second only to ST. Third is SW the clone wars

Don't get me wrong, I like good cartoons as much as anybody else. It's just funny that best Star Wars for a long time is a cartoon.

The last years are quite good, do not forget the spinoff Torchwood.
