How did device upgrading change in AE?

Is it true that squads are not removed from the pool when they upgrade?

To get devices to upgrade you must first have replacements on for the unit. Then it will check for supplies, not sure what the cap is exactly, but you'll need at least enough to pay for the upgrade (1 supply point per load cost of the new device*the number of devices upgraded).

You also need enough devices in the pool. This is 1.5 times the number of old devices that will upgrade for nearly everything except engineers and squads, these only need 1 time the number of old devices, the pools are lowered by the number of upgrading devices (squads as well). Old devices are returned to the pool, you only get 0.5 devices in the pool for every disabled device in the unit. Squad and engineer devices that are returned to the pool are upgraded first. The overall result of the returning/upgrading of squads is that it seems like no squads are taken from the pools. If you are upgrading a unit without any disabled squads the pools will indeed be the same before and after an upgrade of squads, however, if you have disabled squads upgrading, the pools will lower.
