I am going to be honest here, the whole production thing is pretty mysterious to me so my two questions:

- does more than one production/industry unit on a planet actually improve the production rate?

- does more than one shipyard increase the rate of ship production?

Thanks

If I understand your question correctly, then the answer is: not quite in the terms you're thinking of, no.

Having multiple industrial units on a colony (Colonial Workshop, Light Industry, etc.) allows you to build multiple buildings *simultaneously*. So, for instance, you could build both a shipyard and a research center at the same time.

However, having two industry units won't allow you to construct a building any *faster* (i.e., two Colonial Workshops will not allow you to build a Shipyard in just one turn).

Multiple shipyards works the same way as multiple industry units: You can build more ships at a time, but you can't build them any faster.

Thank you; that is complete clarification. Sadly, I very seldom have the money to build things/ships one at a time. Can see it being useful with shipyards late in the game.

You're welcome!

And if it makes you feel any better, I find it's generally not worth it to have more than one industry structure per colony in any case. Given the limited number of building slots, their cost (as you pointed out), and not to mention the pollution you get from even just a single industry unit, it's usually hard to justify having more than one of them per planet.

Yes indeed. Particularly on Rich/Very Rich colonies, it's often worth having multiple shipyards later on, especially if you're engaged in a major war.
