There was a certain man who said this:-

New troop icons for Ancients, Shakturi and robotics would be great too. Still, a must have "mod" for everybody.

In this thread http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2443210

So I thought I would have a go at creating the missing three racial troop icons.

I have included a picture of my work.

Optimus Prime from The Transformers is doubling as the kick-ass ground trooper for the Ancient Guardians. He's real dark in the colony detail window but it's the same with the Mortalen Conqueror and unavoidable when so much black is used.

The Shakturi is the Racial picture flipped horizontally.

The BattleBot is a find on the internet and the white background removed. He's a small but capable soldier, just as long as he doesn't meet the Shakturi!

If anybody likes them I will upload them here... If you all like them I will post and upload to the Racial troop icons mod proper.

Edit: The files have been uploaded in post 4 here http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=2789320

Shakturi and Battlebots look nice! I really don't want to be a jerk here, but I don't like the Michael Bays Transformer movies very much, so I have an "issue" with that Optimus Prime. Loved the War for Cybertron though.
Nothing personal Cookie Monster. I fully appreciate the effort. Will be using the Shakturis and Battlebots for sure.

Did you have something more like this in mind? See picture below.

Or are you not a Star Wars fan either?

Transformers was bad but Optimus Prime is about all I could find for kick-ass robots.

On a side note, maybe some images from the Iron Man series could be used? I kinda liked those couple of movies they made.

Good work, cookie monster.

I personally feel that the Mechanoids aren't really kick ass robots, but a bit more sophisticated and passive, so should have something that reflects that. It's hard to explain, but bare in mind that they present themselves as those holographic images encased with circuits. Therefore they wouldn't necessarily take on a bi-pedal form for their ground troops.

AHA! MR!

I have done my homework.

From the galactopedia

quote:

The Mechanoids are a very strange race – they exist as pure logic, living inside computer networks. They have no physical form, but they can project their presence on holographic displays or video screens.

They are assisted by small robots called Helpernoids, who build and maintain all of the machinery for the Mechanoid civilization.

No one seems to know where the Mechanoids came from – they certainly appear to be the product of an extremely advanced, but now vanished civilization. What happened to that parent civilization? Why did they make the Mechanoids? Not even the Zenox or the Quameno can answer those questions.

The Mechanoids are very reclusive. They describe themselves as guardians of the planet Utopia. This system is a forbidden zone that they fanatically defend. Their only communications are terse warnings to stay clear of their territory.

They have no interest in expansion or growth – they confine themselves to their planet Utopia in their home system. The Mechanoids appear to be very unfriendly and unwelcoming – perhaps it would be wise to stay clear of them.

So I guess the helpernoids are the ground troops, It's kinda a moot point anyway because all you will see of the icon is when you click on the Ancient Guardians homeworld. You cant play as them and it's unusual to be at war with them. How many decent robot pictures are there? Not that many.

You may be right, but there's nothing there that states that the helpernoids are the ground troops. I think you can excersise a bit of creative freedom when creating the mechanoid troops. Do they have the ability to create an army of robotic troops or do they do the fighting themselves? There is no correct answer as yet.

Think of a walker with the mechanoids face projected on a view screen. That's what I had in mind but I could be wrong.

Actually, when I'm thinking about very ancient and powerful Artificial Intelligence creating ground forces, something like these come to mind:

http://news.deviantart.com/article/55257/#/d1jala0

and

and

http://metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Helios

Also, I find it very unlikely that highly advanced AI would create troops representing humanoids. Weevils from A. Reynolds Prefect and Squids from Matrix feel like perfect overwhelming terror and assault weapons for advanced AI which doesn't need to worry about physical limitations that humanoid species run into.

Just my thoughts. If I had any skill with photo editing I'd probably try to whip out something myself. And then you could hate.

Also, just image google word "mech" or "battlemech". Great stuff.

So the robo troops for all races can have a troop image of their own? If so, I need to do some more modding... Bwuhahahahahahaha!

Yeah in the troop folder there are 21 troop icons (one for each race) and one RobotTroop icon. Of course in stock they are all the generic tank.

Well then, I will definately have to come up with something to put there.

And technically, its not a tank...its a Sturmgeschütz III...a mobile assault gun. Poor thing should have been retired years ago. Yeah yeah, I'm nitpicking.

I am subscribed to this thread. I just read my email and laughed about the Sturmgeschütz III. You grognards make me giggle and pull out my hair sometimes

Well I think they want you to think it's a tank cos a mobile assault gun on it's own would be vunerable to Infantry.

But right you are sir http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Sturmgesch%c3%bctz+III&FORM=BIFD#x0y0

Well, if you want a TRULY cool mechanical, here is one!
In the immortal words of General Mohc: Darktrooper: release!

The Imperial walker I saw above was an interesting take, boxy like an early German AFV with a MG34/42 cuppola... neat picture.
[I do not think even all those STuG III would do very well against that thing...]

The problem with any dark troop is they are gonna be barely visible in game at the tiny pixel size they are represented.

The only time you will see this guy is when you click on the Ancient Guardians home world, I guess then you will be barely able to make him out.

Use the Mortalen's troop as an example they are barely visible on my monitor at default brightness settings.

Edit. I took the picture opened it up in Gimp and zoomed out to in game size, you can't see the bloke just spots of white.

It's a big problem with the Mortalen troops, the only way you know there is something onboard a ship is because troops none is not written there.

The ships and bases screen does not show the exact amount of troops onboard a Mortalen ship? If you don't play the Mortalen then I think the editor can show it but indeed this is not desirable.

You may end up with some Mortalen troops due to war.

I have to count the black boxes to be sure of troop content.

If fleet troop unloading wasn't bugged in my game then it wouldn't be an issue. I have to select each ship manually to unload troops at the moment. I have bug reported this.

I was house keeping somehow I had 740 troops with some in less than ideal locations. So I disbanded and returned troops to the capital.

That is the issue with Infantry Battalion icons. They are really small (and unless they expand the infantry combat aspect of the game, there is not need to make them bigger). I have gone to just using different kinds of flags. You really cannot see any detail, so I have used unit patches and emblems and the like.
I have used the SAS pin, the IDF emblem -- stuff like that.

Not a bad idea, and something that could be easily done with PS or PSP in an afternoon. One could even make custom flags or emblems and not have to worry about copyright issues.

Yeah, the SAS and the Mossad... that is a bunch of dudes you do not want to anger. If they want you dead, it is a question of time.
