Andy, check in a previous save. Perhaps, as it was replacement sqn, you had filled it onto 54 warplanes, making the unit unable to fly.

Thank Castor - I will put it down to the pilots all being hungover as the escort was three 'wet' RN ships cest la vie bad luck seems to be hitting me a lot.
But as my old pappy used to say the more you screw up the more bad luck you get

Goin to need to stop posting for a little while I am so irritated

Read PZB's AAR to find out why.

2 turns from map edge in middle of nowhere far south off the perth to map edge PZB pops up with KB having waltzed past my sub and surface pickets undetected because of a pinpoint accurate sinking report for a BB that was undamaged led KB right to my TF.

PZB did nothing wrong I dont think I did anything wrong but it lost me 2 carriers and 3 BB's because the game pinpointed my location for PZB

Some things can be seen as bad play but this was a clear case of very bad luck. Hard to accept but sometimes the gods (or the engine) of war have their planning.

Andy;

Hats are off to you my partner-in-pain, he's giving me a nasty shallacking too. 4 allied CVs lost, NZ with bolstered land support lost. Fiji lost with 23 units on it - he landed with 145K men!!! Why did the allies wait so long for D-Day?? Japan could do it in late 42.

Anyway, the point is that it is painful playing him. He doesn't miss much, and seems to get a decent slice of luck with his endeavours. Despite the pain you are suffering I do admire your grit and it helps me continue to resist him. Keep on swinging.

Ouch

Generally he had no luck against me in last game in this one he has had lots but defacto I messed up as well

Burma Corps 4 small operations are possible in Arakan/Assam both sides of the Chindwin and out of China
DEI attack NW or NE out of Darwin/Port Hedland but not deep strikes
East Austrlia into PM/NG
SOPAC into Solomons
SOPAC into small islands north of Fiji
CENTPAC into Marquesas/Line Ilsands or Midway

So lots of options

You have options but given the tools in your tool box - what can you do?

What are the status of your tools?
CV force and pilots
CVE force and pilots
Fast Surface Forces - and I mean Fast Battleships and support ships
Bombardment Force - Slow Battleships and support ships
Assault lift
Supply / Fuel Lift to forward bases
Is your land base effective against naval units?

CV force and pilots

Pilots good - CV's about 800 carrier air at present mostly in dry dock

CVE force and pilots

Fast Surface Forces - and I mean Fast Battleships and support ships

4 - 5 BB's modern and good in working order, 1 old slow one left

Bombardment Force - Slow Battleships and support ships
Assault lift

No issues

Supply / Fuel Lift to forward bases

Burma and PH are very welll stocked - Australia and NZ less so maybe 200k fuel each several million supply

Is your land base effective against naval units?

Yes plenty of SBD's with good pilots - plenty of FB and Mediums with low naval attack

If you have not  - then you need to temper your tools by assigning proper leaders to ships / air groups / assault units
Start forming permanent Task Forces - with permanent leaders assigned.

What are the tools in your opponent's tool chest? And yes I have read PZB's report of your last disaster at sea.
How do they compare to yours?

New subject - what can you do to suppress his submarines in the active theater?

Plans for the burma theatre a little deja vue....

OK PZB probably has 5 or 6000 AV in Burma so a decisive result is going to be tricky

The situation is difficult I currently have air superiority but thats largely because PZB isnt fighting me for it

My dispositions (only counting units of de or larger)

Ceylon Garrison 500AV

Katha Front between the Chindwin and Irrawaddy Rivers prtecting Mytkina

NCAC 2,000 AV all Chinese
Burma Corps 1,400 AV

Well dug in neither side is going to move easily - so stalemate

Kalameyo

XV Corps 2,100 AV could attack down the West Bank of the Chindwin towards where it joins the irrawaddy but bad terrain and I would be unable to supply many more troops so pretty easy to adjust with interior lines

Chittagon and Arakan Front

IV corps 1,900 AV bad terrain even if I could take Ramree

In reserve prepped for amphib ops XXXIII Corps - 1,700 AV was tasked for next wave of amphib ops

14th Army Reserve
3rd Indian Div - 600 AV (2 Para, 1 Cdo, 1 Marine and 2 Chindit Bdes)
14th Army Armoured Gp - (800 AV of Armour)

Due to arrive inside 30 days 1,500 AV at Aden

Assuming III Indian Corps is being transferrred back from Australia - I could probably add another 1,500 AV of Armour to that total but not quickly.

So at absoulute best I could attack at 2:1 in AV but with PZB able to reinforce quickly Burma looks pretty static without amphib options.

I may thraten an advance on Ramree just to be annoying and down the Chindwin to try and draw his forces into the open but even if I massed everything I struggle to see an easy way to attack overland.

Even Slim had to wait untilt he Japamnese had been defeated in Assam beofre attacking overland into Burma

Hi Andy,

I don't suppose you could post a map or three? I guess I'm wondering why Burma as a place to take a wack at him?

As i am currently doing a operation in Burma against my opponent i would point some thing which could easy your life. For information purposes, i took the game over when China was completely lost except Chungking and two chinese bases east of burma in the mountains which are currently too in allied hands. So no land link between china and burma for japan.

I am currently forcing around 10.000 - 12.000 AV in Burma which are almost impossible to dislodge as Shwebo had lvl 9 forts (currently lvl 8) and the japanese player can quickly move units between his cities and some of them are in bad terrain.

1.) Use supply as your advantage. As you currenty lack the lvl 9 bases in your other angles of attack move 4E to Burma. There should be no problem if you move around 10 heavy bombers squads and 10 medium bombers squads to burma.

2.) Get enough fighters there. As my game is currently around the same timeframe as yours i have more than enough squads to keep around US fighters squads in Burma. Use upgrade/downgrade to move the top fighter frames. It only takes around a week so shift some P47 and P38 there. If you do not plan any heavy figher covered invasions somewhere else just downgrade the squads there and use them in burma.

3.) Try to ship at least 2 or 3 marine squads to burma and if possible (possible rebuy from one of your sunk carriers) ship a navy squad there. The goal i always try to achieve is to not bulk to much fighers of one army type (marines/army/navy/brits/aussies) as it can attrit you figher pools/bomber pools quickly. So mix them if possible in burma too.

4.) You should have enough recon stuff in burma already. If not send some stuff there. You should be able to recon all bases in burma to get a good feeling where his stuff is and where it moves to.

5.) Use your bombers (2E/4E) to systemically shut down his bases. Be careful with heavy flak bases as 2E take heavy losses so use 4E for that bases. In general bombard every possible base with your bombers with airfield attack to kill his supply. Always sweep them too if your enemy tries a LRCAP trap. Pick bases with a lot of units in it which lack flak and bombard them on a daily basis. You can kill between 500 and 2000 points of supply a day with your bombers. The supply system will move alway some supply there so you can lower the overall supply on a good rate.

6.) Assault some islands in the Adamans. No big scale invasion, no battle to change the war. You just need a base there to base some DBs. Through that you can cut off or at least disrupt his supply runs to rangoon and he has to supply his troops through rangoon. Use low scale invasions with expandable ships. (LST are good for such thing) and focus on undefended bases. Yes PzB can ruin your day there if he wants but the goal is that you do not drop to much stuff in the battle. If you drop on some undefended base there a small baseforce, and 2-3 engineering units and a BDE the losses are not high if something goes wrong. As soon as the base reaches lvl 3 or 4 you can airlift a larger baseforce and a HQ. The goal is not to start a big battle, to goal is to do it low profile.

In general use your 4E, you get around 70 each month as replacement and i do not think it is impossible to even lose so many 4E. Be careful with your 2E as the losses especially in pilots can be high.

The point i would like to mention is that you at least should try a second angle of attack, as far away from Burma as possible. Again here no big scale carrier stuff, instead low profile invasions on undefended bases. Use LCI and LST to do that. Ship some engeneers there and let the base develop. Try to build up a thread against rabaul/kavieng. As soon as you control Kavieng you can close down Truk. If you close down Truk life gets hard for japan in central pacific. Pre some divisions here and there wherever you can assault without running into a wall of overlapping bases. A division for small 6k islands, a divisions + hq + some armor stuff for the 12k islands. Again this will not win the war for you but it puts pressure in your opponent with very low risk for you. I know it is a logistic challenge to attack from multiple directions but it is the safest way.

Every division you have should prepare for something and invade it as soon as prepped, every engineering squad should develop a base for something. Every aviation squad/hq should be at a base where you could use it.

p.s.: Last information, soon you get Ind44 Squads at 90 each month. With that you can even start some attrition warfare in Burma. Try to mix you assaulting stuff (Australian,US,Indian,British) to attrit you squad pools equal.

In addition to the above I have 2 RAF Hudson Sqns and 2 of Wellington ASW/Liberator ASW on naval Search ASW duties as well as 1 USN Liberator Sqn on Search and 4 or 5 float sqns

I should avoid being surprised again

More air power is en route and I should have north of 1800 combat aircraft in the India Theatre inside of a month (currently about 1200)

So pressure is being applied

I am spread out accross 8 major AF complexes to avoid a crippling strike against one - I pay a co ordination price for it but I think its worth it

The only base worth hitting is Comilla with its massed 4 E but its protected by a LOT of AA and 2 Sqns of Thuds plus 1 of Spit VIII's so if he comes after my 4E it will cost him a lot

Yup ok I have planned thought and decided.

Several Operations will continue

1. Burma

Air Offensive in North Burma - I have 6 Sqn of USN/USAAF Bombers en route (Venturas and Bolos) which will join in the attack giving me a lot of metal to keep those air bases supressed and destroy supplies.

1st New Chinese Corps currently at Ledo will be flown in to join NCAC allowing me to release Burma Corps from its defensive role in the Katha box

Burma Corps will join with XV Corps in a jungle war with the japanese forces currently in North Burma trying to flank them and generally causing a nuisance.

IV Corps with support from 3rd Indian Divs 'special forces' group will attempt to sieze and hold Ramree Island

XXXIII Cotrps will stay in reserve until III Indian Corps can return to India from Australia - when III Corps returns XXXIII Corps wil join in the mayhem in Burma.

14th Army with the Armoured reserve will wait ready to exploit any opportunites that come up.

2. Deep SOPAC - an operation to recapture the Marquesas

3. Getting ready for an operation to hit PM.

4. An operation to drive NE out of Darwin into New Guinea.

Next 6 months these are the operations that I will attempt to undertake

As I have some time today I did an anlysis of what 10th Airfroce and the RAF achieved in Burma last turn

Mandalay was hit by 51 Mediums (mosltly RAF Wellingtons) and 125 Heavies (mix if LibII, B24's and a few B17's) and achieved 4 air base hits and 135 runway hits - not bad but not special.

Schwebo was hit by 66 Mediums (all Blenheims - Mix of I's/IV's and VD's) and achieved 4 Base hits and 66 Runway hits - outstanding result

Magwe was hit by 21 Mediums (RAF Beauforts) and achieved 1 Base hits and 11 Runway hit

Meiktila was hit by 28 Mediums (RAAF Beafort VIII's) and 16 Beaufighters - achieved 12 Base hits and 50 runway hits excluding sweeps and escorts the AF launced 405 sorties for 28 air base hits and 284 runway hits

Bhamo was hit by 30 USAAF B25C's and achieved 11 Base hits and 22 runway hits

In additon 44 Attack Bombers and 16 F/Bs hit various LCU's and achieved not a lot

Interesting result

I am hoping PZB gets back soon I have new plans I have been working on amongst them is a series of diversions in Burma I reckon I can put 10,000 AV into the field in that theatre but can at best only supply 3,000 on the Imphal front and maybe 3,000 on the Katha front making this a definite diversion but that desont mean I cannot get something out of it.....

Some little supply tip from me. Instead of putting your 4E and 2E to rest if you want to repair them you can shuttle supply with them. The will repair at almost the same rate like if they rest but boost your supply lvls quite effective. In addition 4E and 2E carry large amounts of supply. Only morale needs to be taken care of as supply shuttling does no recover it very well.

In general my supply situation got a lot better since i shuttle supply with 2E and 4E whenever i do not need them to attack.

Ok we are back up and running relativelly quiet couple of turns

PZB hit Darwin with a Bombardment but I had moved my heavies inland so they hit air

I have 4 Strategic 'Groups' operating at present

1st (Chittagong and Comilla (B24J's/B17E's/Liberators/Wellingtons)
2nd (Darwin (B24D's)
3rd (Port Hedland B24D1's)
4th (NE Australia everythign else)

All are protedcted by heavy AA defences, fighters and have at least one base they can go to if the bombardment looks like its incoming....

Japanese forces look like they are moving into North Burma they have to pass an open stretch to get to the front my Bombers hit them hard there

Today an Idpt Tank Bde got hit hard I cant stop reinforcements getting to the front but I can hurt them en route
