Combat

The SS Balao, while on patrol about 33 miles NE of Aparri was attacked by IJN ASW and got away with minor damage.

Two IJN naval bombardments of Derby inflicted very light casualties on the Allied defenders.

Myitkyina was hit by 23 X Blenheim (2 damaged) and 48 X P-38G for light damage.

The 6th Australian Cav Brigade, still sitting astride the road to Derby was attacked by many Vals and Kates. Losses were light and all of the planes escaped without damage.

At Derby the Japanese artillery struck and caused light losses.

The Chinese suffered moderate casualties at Sian to the Japanese artillery bombardment.

The Japanese artillery attacked at the Chinese at the road junction inflicting very light casualties.

A Val attacked the SS Tambor 39 miles SW of Koepang forcing her to dive and she evaded the attack with no damage. It is a very hostile environment for a surfaced sub as the air patrols are heavy.

Gilbert Edwards took his physical for the Army at Doctor's Hospital and he was informed that he passed and was classified 1A. Now it would just be a matter of time until he was told to report for induction. When he gets home he tells his parents and 2 sisters.

Phil lies in his bunk wondering how long they'll have at Pearl Harbor before the next mission. He thinks of lying under a palm tree, on the beach with a nice cold beer.

Sylvia reads the newspaper and then returns to her book keeping duties while having a cup of tea. She has troubles concentrating because she's worried about Pete.

Pete is giving a navigation course so that all of the men can know what to do if needed. It's been decided that the more that the men can do the better if the need arises so while the planes are repaired classes keep them busy.

Major Smith has been informed that orders for the 1st Marines have been issued. They will be moving to Luganville as soon as the ships are available. He wonders what the mission will be and hopes that their combat losses will be made good before they see action again.

The British, American and Free French forces start the final offensive in Tunsia.

Combat

The 4th Mixed Brigade located at Myitkyina was attacked by 34 X B-25J and 30 X P-38G. Losses were thought to have been light and 4 of the bombers were damaged by ground fire.

A Betty spotted the CV Indomitable 128 miles SE of Andaman Island and not to much later the RN CV TF was attacked by 25 X Betty, 9 X Zero and 27 X Jack. The CAP of 9 X Seafire and 20 X Wildcat V pounced and 5 X Betty were splashed (15 damaged), a Zero was downed (another damaged) and 3 X Jack went down (3 damaged) while the Cap had 2 X Seafire destroyed (another damaged) and 9 X Wildcat V went down. The CV Indomitable took 2 bomb hits and the CV Victorious got hit by 1. The damage to each ship is negligible thanks to the armored flight decks. For 2 days this TF has been in range to strike it's target, but the weather prevented the launching of an attack.

Sian's defenders had light casualties from the Japanese artillery bombardment there.

At Derby the Allies had very light losses to the artillery bombardment.

The SS O19 was attacked by IJN DDs 133 miles off of Derby but suffered no damage.

A Jake attacked the SS Tambor 32 miles from Koepang but the sub evaded and escaped.

Weaponry, navigation, Morse code and even evasion and survival are being taught. The last 2 items aren't exactly Pete's favorites as they represent things gone wrong. Whatever this group is up to it won't be a walk in the park and everybody is itching to find out exactly what they're in for.

John Doe stops by the hotel's office, leans in through the doorway and clears his throat. “I just wanted to let you know that Pete is doing fine and you should be getting mail any time now.” Sylvia thanks him and Mr. Doe leaves. She knows that the mail isn't exactly moving in a steady fashion, but she'd love to have a letter to read.

CDR Wallace has taken the time to address his officers and let them know in no uncertain terms will drunken brawls be tolerated. After the meeting the officers pass along the word to the chiefs, who will be responsible for getting the men of Tarpon to toe the line.

Operation Revenge is in motion and Ed's Old Gals are the focus as they prepare for another run at Wake Island to soften things up a bit for the invasion troops. Ed wonders what a naval war in the Pacific would've been like 10 or 20 years ago with the slow speed of the ships, limited aircraft and the great distances to be covered. Even with today's modern weapons and fleets fighting without ever seeing one another it's easy to miss the opposition.

Combat

As the RN CV TF retired from their aborted attack the DDs Panther and Paladin had a sub contact which they vigorously prosecuted. Many hits were scored and the sub breached and then slipped back beneath the waves, a confirmed kill.

The SS Tambor attacked IJN MSWs and DDs 45 miles off of Kupang but came up empty. Later the Japanese, who never gave up their search located and punished the sub very heavily. She radioed for help and reported that she is sinking.

Derby was bombarded twice today by the IJN and had very light casualties as a result. Later an artillery bombardment added lightly to today's casualties.

SS Gato attempted to attack some Japanese DDs about 195 miles from Broome, but she was discovered and attacked first. The sub has sustained moderate damage and flooding. She will attempt to make it to Perth for emergency repairs before heading to a shipyard.

Myitkyina was bombed by 51 X Liberator VI (2 Damaged)who were escorted by 34 X P-38G. The damage to the base was moderate and casualties were thought to have been moderate also.

Lunga was bombed by 190 X B-24D, of which 23 went down and another 86 were damaged. The Japanese put up 36 X Zero (10 were destroyed and 17 were damaged) and 26 X Jack (4 destroyed 18 damaged). The airbase suffered heavy damage and many secondary explosions were noted.

The 6th Australian Cav Brigade sitting astride the road to Derby was hit by IJN aircraft and the unit sustained light losses while a Val and a Kate were reported to have been damaged.

The Japanese bombardment at the road junction resulted in light Chinese losses.

A Chinese attack on the Japanese about 18 miles from Sian resulted in extremely heavy Chinese losses and heavy Japanese casualties. The relief effort didn't work and Chinese units are refusing to move so a disaster is in the making. A possible collapse in China is a reality.

When the artillery barrage lifted the defenders of Sian had sustained heavy casualties and then they tried an attack on their tormentors. Both sides sustained very heavy losses, but the Japanese troops retreated towards Homan.

Slim is sick as a dog with a horrible cold. They thought that he might have Malaria, but it's just a cold. He feels awful and is grouchy so everyone is giving him a wide berth. Even Gunny leaves him alone and says that he'll pick his fights where he has a chance.

Red has continued in his melancholy funk and even Lucky senses that he's upset. The dog just lies at his side watching him and only leaves for an occasional foray to the galley.

Pete is rapidly getting bored out of his mind and he presses for a training flight to break the monotony. “How many times can you teach me what I already know?” he asks. He manages to get an OK and a plane is prepped for a flight tomorrow.

Combat

The SS Tambor was attacked by ASW vessels about 77 miles from Kupang.

The SS Seadragon was attacked by DDs 27 miles SW of Singapore and now has a problem with a propeller shaft that is vibrating. The chief engineer is worried that this will worsen and put the boat at risk so the skipper decides that they will return to a yard where repairs can be made.

Derby was bombarded twice today by the IJN and casualties were very light. No damage was done to any facilities. The IJA artillery chimed in later on and caused very few casualties.

Wake Island was bombarded and the facilities were lightly damaged and casualties were thought to have been heavy. The BB West Virginia was hit twice by return fire causing a few men to suffer shrapnel wounds.

Kweiyang was bombed again and sustained moderate damage to the base and light casualties. 2 X Helen were damaged in the attack.

Myitkyina was bombed by 45 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) who were escorted by 51 X P-38G. Damage to the base was moderate.

The Chinese troops at Sian staged another attack today forcing the Japanese units there to retreat towards Homan with heavy losses. The Chinese suffered very heavy casualties but Sian, for now, is free of the Japanese.

The training flight takes off as scheduled and Pete is checking out one of his prize pupils. After a while he tells the man that he's to keep a steady course and an eye on their position. With that done he curls up under a blanket and proceeds to fall asleep. About 2 hours later Pete is awakened by a commotion and a badly vibrating aircraft. He enters the cockpit and sees that the men there are busy so he turns to the navigator and asks what happened. The answer sends a chill through him.

“We were flying along and the weather worsened. Cloud cover made me switch to dead reckoning. Anyway the right motor quit working and now we're down to one engine.” The navigator then continues with, “Would you check on my position calculations?”

Pete knows that this isn't good and he calmly goes over things with the navigator. Meanwhile the pilot asks for a fix as he's having an awful time fighting the constant loss of altitude. Pete leans over the pilot's shoulder and says, “You'd better head SW so that maybe we can make landfall before we run out of altitude.”

The pilot nods and sets his heading on the course Pete recommends. Now it's just a matter of time. Pete goes back to the navigation charts and tells the other man not to worry. An hour later they make landfall and the pilot announces that the first level area he spots is going to be where they land. After another tense 5 minutes the pilot announces for everybody to brace themselves for a rough landing. He sets the plane down and they bounce along losing speed. Finally they come to a halt and they check for any injuries. There are none so they gather their food and water and take a look at the plane and their surroundings. They have no idea as to exactly where they are so until morning they will try to sleep.

Attack planes have reported that Wake Island has 6 LCUs 13400/56/0

Combat

Wake Island was raided by 118 X SBD (4 damaged), 27 TBF (2 damaged) and 18 F4F-4 and it appeared that the airfield was moderately damaged and the ground troops had light casualties. Not long afterwards 22 X TBF struck Wake doing light damage to the field. 1 plane was downed and 3 were damaged. The USN's old BBs struck and inflicted very heavy casualties and moderate damage to the base facilities. There were many secondary explosions observes. There was no return fire from the defenders. The DD Shaw struck a mine and has moderately light systems damage, flooding and fires. She is retiring to Midway Island where an AR will make repairs and then she'll return to Pearl Harbor for some yard time.

The RN DD Paladin was hit by a torpedo and was burning. Her sister DDs found and clobbered the perpetrator with multiple hits and the RN has a confirmed kill. It's a long 146 miles to Colombo for the Paladin though as she has moderate systems damage and flooding. The fires are rapidly being brought under control. So it's expected that she'll live to fight another day.

Kweiyang was struck from the air for a change and sustained moderate damage, light casualties and claimed 4 X Helen as damaged.

The air raids on Myitkyina continued with 21 X Blenheim doing light damage to the base and inflicting light losses to the ground troops at the cost of a bomber being damaged by AA.

Derby was visited by the IJN and the defenders had light losses due to the shelling. Later the IJA's artillery inflicted light losses on the Allied troops.

A PB4Y attacked a Japanese sub 98 miles E of Mili and claimed a hit.

The Tarpon departed Auckland today, though all systems haven't had their repairs completed from her refit. The work will be finished at Noumea as Auckland is very busy.

O'Bannon docks and has her fuel bunkers filled, food and ammo stocks are being replenished and a fast turn around is looking like the order of the day. Since the Benham is undergoing the same Bill and Phil manage to get together with some other naval officers and head off for dinner. The pile of letters from Sandy will have to wait until later when Bill returns as the mail wasn't delivered before he left. He did give his letters to be sent out though. It's good to be back at Pearl and feel safe.

Pete checks the compass and waits while the radio operator sends out their position. After a little while the man appears and announces that he sent out the message, but doesn't know if it was received. The men debate whether or not to stay with the downed plane or attempt to walk out. They agree to stay put for a day and search the area for water.

The Axis' loses in the first 3 ½ months of 1943 are placed at 66K killed, wounded and captured.

Combat

Wake Island was again shelled by the USN and damage to the base was light as were the casualties among the troops. Allied DMSs and MSWs commenced sweeping the minefields at Wake Island. An air raid on Wake Island by 114 X SBD (1 damaged), 25 X TBF and 18 X F4F-4 did very heavy damage to the airbase and estimates placed the ground troops having suffered lightly. About 25 minutes later 54 X SBD (2 damaged), 26 X TBF 91 damaged) and 17 X F4F-4 rolled in and did an additional amount of moderate damage and negligible losses to the troops. An unescorted raid by 20 X Betty on the MSWs at Wake was greeted by 10 X F4F-4. A Betty was splashed and 2 others damaged while 2 of the Wildcats sustained damage. No ships were touched.

The SS Seadragon was attacked by DDs while traversing the Malacca Straits, but she managed to evade her tormentors before they got a bead on her.

Derby was bombarded four times by the IJN and the defenders had light casualties. An IJA bombardment added more light casualties. They Allied artillery responded and IJA losses were moderate.

Kweiyang was raided by Japanese planes and had moderate damage and light casualties. It was claimed that 6 X Helen were damaged.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 12 X B-25J at the river crossing to no effect.

A Japanese bombardment at the road junction inflicted light losses on the Chinese troops.

The Palawan has been a busy vessel of late. After picking up elements of the Fiji Brigade at Fifi and delivering them to Espiritu Santo they loaded elements of the 40th Division and delivered them to Noumea. Now as the last of the ships in the convoy completes unloading they're off to Espiritu Santo to pick up more troops to bring back to Noumea. “Must be something in the wind,” says Cookie. Red could care less as all he wants is time ashore to resume his search for the girl. This has become an obsession with him and he's determined that nothing will stop him from finding her, even if he must jump ship.

Ed has been busily conferring with his staff and evaluating the TF's performance in it's pounding of Wake. This by far beats riding a desk, he thinks. He's constantly worried because the minefields stretch out much farther than anybody ever would've suspected. He thinks of the poor MSWs are doing their dirty job under the guns of the Japanese that his Old Gals fail to take out. He hopes that the Wildcats can manage to keep the Japanese planes away.

Pete returns to the plane after searching for water and not finding any. The pilot is still out there and he should be back by now. The men confer and decide that 2 of them will search for him for a couple of hours before it gets dark. When those men return having failed to find him they debate if they should fire a flare so that he can find his way back.

Pete says, “There could be Japanese patrols out and they could see a flare too. Maybe it isn't such a good idea.”

“How about firing a pistol then,” another one of them says, “Maybe he would hear it and find his way back?”

“Pistol, flare, doesn't matter out here,” say another of the crew, “The Japs could hear or see anything that he could. If he got lost then maybe tomorrow when we set off looking for help we'll find him as he's out there in the direction that we'll be going. Let's get some sleep because tomorrow will be a tough day and they'll only get worse until we find help.”

“Or die,” mutters the flight engineer.

Mine sweeping operations at Wake Island continue by many DMSs and MSWs. There is no defensive fire against these ships. They minefields seem endless. A huge raid on Wake Island by 173 X SBD, 61 X TBF and 132 F4F-4 dealt a very heavy blow to the airbase and caused moderate casualties among the ground troops. A mere 3 SBD were damaged in the attack.

Kweiyang was struck from the air again. Damage and casualties were very light and a lone Helen was damaged.

The 2nd Australian Division was attacked by many Vals and Kates 21 miles SW of Derby. Casualties were heavy and 3 X Val went down (5 damaged) and a Kate was destroyed

At Derby the IJA bombarded the defenders again and casualties were few. The Allied gunners responded and Japanese losses were heavy.

A Mavis spotted the CVL Independence 59 miles NE of Wake.

The Chinese troops at Sian have pulled out of the city and are moving towards Chungking rather than be cut off. It will be a fighting retreat as Japanese units are attempting to cut the road. The Chinese move slowly while the Japanese are much swifter, a large problem for the Chinese troops.

The DD Shaw docked at Midway and repairs on her flooding commenced immediately.

The men lay out panels made from parachutes and held in place with rocks. When they are done it's an arrow pointing in the direction they intend to follow. They plan to rest by day and move at night when it's cooler, though the going will be slower because of lessened vision. Pete leads off and he suddenly realizes that he's silently praying to survive this mess. He thinks of Sylvia and he's determined that he'll see her again. The going is difficult over the broken terrain and he walks carefully so as not to injure himself. They have a long way to go and so little water and practically nothing to eat. If I were a betting man, which I've been known to be, he thinks, I'd say that our chances are remote at best. He starts to hum Benny Goodman's Body and Soul softly as the them men trudge along behind him. After walking for a few hours Pete stops and allows everyone to catch up and they take a short rest before resuming their trek.

Red visits the galley to talk with Cookie and they talk about almost everything under the sun except the girl. Finally Cookie says, “When we get back to Noumea I'm going to join you in the search. I can't stand to see you like this any longer. I'm going to speak to the Captain about getting off the ship as soon as we dock and we'll return in time for scheduled departure. OK?” Red nods, smiles and thanks Cookie.

Troops aboard the many APs are antsy as the ships sail in large circles awaiting the word to move in on their target. No such orders will be given until the minefields are declared cleared at Wake.

Gilbert Edwards has been notified to report for induction on Monday morning, May 3rd. He spends his time seeing friends who haven't gone off to war yet. He had wanted to take in a Yankee game, but they're playing in Boston and then move on to Washington. His sisters are making all of his favorite foods for him before he leaves. His father and mother are upset that he's going off to war and that the family will be losing an income.

The British fought off a Panzer counterattack in Tunisia.

The DMSs and MSWs continue sweeping the vast minefields surrounding Wake Island. The new, fast BBs arrived and shelled Wake doing moderate damage and inflicting heavy casualties. The CL Phoenix hit a mine and has been ordered to make for Midway. She has suffered light damage to her systems and has moderate flooding. Later 155 X SBD under heavy escort attacked and for 2 SBDs damaged they did heavy damage to the airfield. Casualties were thought to have been light among the Japanese troops.

An IJN DD discovered mines at Guam.

The IJA shelled Derby doing nothing except scaring some chickens. The Allied troops have pulled out and left it for the Japanese rather than be encircled. Now the Allied strategy to deal with Australia will have to be revised once more. Allied Commanders have decided that the first thing to be done is to get the units back up to full strength and after that time will tell if only the Japanese allow them that time.

The Chinese attacked the Japanese troops 72 miles W of Sian, but they were repulsed with very heavy losses while the Japanese suffered heavily. If they can't fight their way through these Japanese troops they will be cut off and all hope of survival will fade away.

“It's all set for us Red,” says Cookie. “Captain Demesa said that as soon as we arrive we should take Lucky for a long walk. He said that it would be at least a few days before we would weigh anchor again so he wished you happy hunting.”

The 1st Marines are readying themselves and their equipment for transport at Noumea. Major Smith has been reassigned and is now finding himself in another rear area position, that of transport. He wonders what he'll have to do as the 1st Marines wade ashore and hike from there.

“I never knew how tiring walking could be,” says one of the men. Another agrees as they stumble on over the broken terrain. “I'm tired, thirsty and hungry,” the man continues.

Pete tells him to keep quiet. “We don't know if there are any Japanese around here so let's be smart.” The pilot had abdicated his position of authority and Pete has taken over, by default more than wanting to. It doesn't really matter as the man is still missing. “We've got to be determined, not giving up. Our ordeal has just begun so get tough because things are going to be hard for us. If you can't keep up or can't continue I won't carry you.” The men laugh because he only has one arm.

Sandy reads another letter from Bill that arrived today. It was written a couple of months ago, but she doesn't care and devours each and every word. Dave tells her that he's going into Susanville and that he'll be home for dinner. She nods and returns to her reading, having not really heard what he said.

The Red Army launched minor attacks near Novorossiysk and drove the Germans back slowly.

U-boats started a 6 day attack on Convoy ON55. 13 ships will be sunk along with 6 U-boats during the running battle.

Wake Island was bombarded once again by the new BBs. Damage and casualties were thought to have been light. Wake was then attacked by 172 X SBD (1 destroyed and 3 damaged) and 126 X F4F-4. The airfield was heavily damaged and ground troops had light casualties. All during this going on the sweepers continue their job clearing the endless minefields.

The routine air attack on Kweiyang did light damage and casualties were very light. A Helen was hit by AA.

Myitkyina had 52 X Zero, 7 X Jack and 9 X Tony in the air when 52 X Liberator VI, 41 X B-24D and 73 X P-38G came calling. In the mayhem that followed 35 X Zero were destroyed (another damaged), 9 X Jack torched, 10 X Tony downed and 3 X Helen trashed. These losses included planes on the ground as the base took heavy damage and ground troops sustained moderate casualties. 2 X Liberator VI went down (8 damaged), 2 X B-24D destroyed (2 damaged) and 34 X P-38G were shot down (5 damaged).

The Chinese hit the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing with 23 X B-25J and inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese, no aircraft were damaged in the attack.

Japanese forces captured an undefended Sian.

Allied troops at the road junction had light losses to an IJA bombardment.

Derby fell to the Japanese.

The SS Tambor continues to limp towards Perth. She is on the surface and easy prey as the next dive will be her last since there is almost enough water inside her to sink her. The crew continues to pump water out and they try to make some repairs, but it doesn't look good for the stricken boat.

Making his flag the West Virginia Ed's reconstituted and replenished bombardment fleet departs Midway to continue the reduction of Wake prior to the landings.

Red is more upbeat today and again thanks Cookie for always being there for him.

PM curtain confers with him military commanders and demands that something be done to reverse the current situation in Australia. His communications with London leave him with a less than cordial relationship with Churchill's government and Washington insists that it's doing all that it can.

The men try and sleep after the sun comes up and Pete nods off almost immediately. There are exhausted and the water is almost gone. There is nothing left to eat and things aren't looking good. Later in the day, as the sun begins to set, they set off again with Pete in the lead. The going is easier tonight as the terrain is flat, but they are almost spent so the progress is slow. They try to stay together, but their little line stretches out. Pete stops for the men to catch up and he reminds them that if they want to live they can't give up.

Operation King is being updated and FDR is questioning why the actual invasion itself has no firm date set. An admiral responds, “Mr. President, if we could bring the KB to battle and defeat it then we'd only have to deal with LBA, but the threat of both and having to protect the landings would expose our carriers to an unacceptable risk. We need to flatten the airfield and deal with the IJN or we're going to need more flight decks than originally planned.” The mood is gloomy, but with the growing might of the Allies all plans are now for offensive, rather than defensive actions.

Sweeping operations at Wake Island continue at a feverish pace. The DMS Lamberton, in a demonstration of just how dangerous a job it can be, hit a mine and has very heavy systems damage to go with moderate flooding. Her fires are light and it is expected that they will all be extinguished, if water pressure can be maintained. In the meantime she slowly makes for Midway. An air attack on Wake Island by the USN suffered 7 X SBD damaged and the airfield sustained heavy damaged while ground forces had light losses. The Wake invasion force continues to sail around waiting for the large minefields to be cleared before entering waters close in. This is having a bad effect on the troops who are getting more nervous and edgy by the moment.

The SS Tuna, was attacked by DDs 143 miles NE of Derby but later in the day she managed to get in her own attack hitting an AK with 2 torpedoes, setting it ablaze.

The peaceful morning was shattered at Lunga by 191 X B-24D, but the Japanese were prepared and had 49 X Zero and 22 X Jack aloft to meet them. 34 X B-24D were shot down and another 86 suffered damage while the defenders also paid a steep price as 17 X Zero were destroyed (17 damaged) and 3 X Jack were downed (17 damaged). The base was dealt a heavy blow and numerous secondary explosions were noted.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing had light casualties as 26 X B-25J hit them again today. No Chinese planes were damaged.

An IJA bombardment 48 miles SW of Sian caused the Chinese forces to have light casualties.

The IJA bombarded the Chinese at the road junction and the defenders had light losses.

The CL Phoenix has docked at Midway and her leaks are being worked on prior to her sailing for Pearl. The damaged DDs Craven and Shaw will accompany her there.

Stalin oversees the May Day celebration and delivers orders that all soldiers continue tirelessly to perfect their fighting skill, precisely follow orders and to maintain discipline and order. He's in a good mood today as the Germans are being driven back and the future looks bright thanks to the Red Army.

As Ed's bombardment TF steams towards Wake he ponders the minefields that ring the tiny atoll. They're an enemy that he truly despises and thinks of them as a cowardly weapon. He also wonders after the war about all the mines both sides seeded and their removal. The thing is that some of them will break their moorings and become navigational hazards long after the war ends. Well they might be cowardly, he thinks, but they are an effective weapon.

“Damn it Pete, I can't take another step,” the man says as he collapses to the ground. The others, as if on cue, do the same so Pete relents and they all take a rest. The last of the water is shared and what started out as a routine training flight has become an impending final act for these spent souls.

After a while Pete sees the situation for what it is. “OK, look,” he says, “I'm going to continue on and if I find water or help I'll be back for you. If I don't find either, well you know what that means. If you want to come then get off of your duffs and let's go.” He gets up and starts to walk leaving the others lying on the ground. They just watch him disappear into the night without a word. I'm a survivor because I don't give up he thinks. Now comes the hard part, put one foot in front of the other and just keep doing it he tells himself.

Mine sweeping continues at Wake Island. Wake Island was bombed by the USN again and 7 X SBD were damaged while the airbase took heavy damage. Ground troops lost moderately.

An ASW attack half way between Wake and Midway on an IJN sub resulted in a confirmed kill. Not long afterwords another sub was detected about 12 miles away and attacked with no results. Ed is concerned about this sub activity and sends a well done to the DDs conveying his TF to Wake.

Pagan was raided by 51 X B-25J and damage to the resource center was moderate. No planes were damaged.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing, was hit by the Chinese with 23 X B-25J and the Japanese had light losses while all planes departed undamaged.

The 1st Australian Division was hit by the IJN at a cost of 5 X Val downed (19 damaged) and a Kate destroyed (25 damaged). The Australians sustained heavy casualties as their retreat towards Perth continues.

The Tarpon docked at Noumea today and repairs will commence immediately on her.

Red is talking with soldiers and decides that he's much better off on the Palawan. They tell him he's crazy after being on a ship that was sunk to go back to sea. Cookie says, “It's all a matter of how you view things.”

The AS Fulton departed Sydney today, bound for Perth.

The DMS Lamberton is losing it's fight to make Midway, but the crew is working that much harder to save her.

The Tambor continues her struggle to reach a safe haven. Her skipper has decided to keep rafts topside for a quick exit if needed and they're staying within sight of land. If the Japanese spot her she's helpless.

O'Bannon sits idly at Pearl Harbor alongside the Benham. The idle time gives Bill and Phil more time to spend together than they've had since their days at the Academy. They visit China Town in Honolulu and thoroughly enjoy their time. The stress flows out of them and Bill constantly talks of Sandy. Finally Phil says, “My boy you've got it bad. Is there any chance for you to get leave? If you do ask the girl to marry you. If you wait until the war ends we could be to old to make families.”

Pete staggers on placing one foot in front of the other. He pauses to check his compass and hears the sound of a motor approaching. Not knowing if it's friend or foe he quickly lies down and waits. He prays that it's not the Japanese. A short time later the motor's noise is gone and he can hear men talking. He can't tell what they're saying, but he doesn't think that it's Japanese so he cautiously crawls towards the sounds. In another couple of hours the sun will come up and he doesn't know if he can take the heat of another day. Not far to go now, he hears English! Pete gets up and tries to shout, but he's so parched that he can't. A guard spots him and nervously shouts, “Halt!” Pete keeps his unsteady approach and the guard fires a round at him, missing. The other men of the recon unit see what's going on and one of them goes to Pete and helps him into the camp. The men give him water and something to eat and Pete tells them of the rest of the downed crew and they head of in the 2 jeeps to get them.

“I am lucky,” says an overjoyed Pete to the world.

SA Chief of Staff Viktor Lutze was killed. The cause is a mystery. Officially it was a car accident. Wilhelm Scheppmann succeeds Lutze.

More mines at Wake Island were swept in preparation for the landings. Ed's TF conducted a naval bombardment of Wake Island and did heavy damage with many secondary explosions observed. The ground troops were thought to have sustained very heavy losses. The USN's air attack also did heavy damage and inflicted very light additional casualties at the cost of 2 SBDs damaged.

Akyab was attacked at night by 28 X Nick (6 damaged) and the damage was a single bomb found the runway, unexploded.

The IND IV Corps, 38 miles from Myitkyina, was attacked and neither side had any casualties.

Kweiyang had light damage and casualties from the Japanese air raid today. A couple of Helens and a Dinah were damaged.

The Chinese sent 19 X B-25J to call on the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing. The Japanese had moderate losses and no planes were damaged.

A Japanese bombardment attack on the Chinese at the road junction had no effect and the Chinese returned the favor with the Japanese forces suffering light losses.

The Lamberton continues towards Midway, but the sea is winning.

The Tambor labors along and her skipper would send out a position report so that they could be rescued, but the radio is still on the fritz. The flooding has gotten a little worse and the Chief of the Boat knows that any further increase in the flooding and they'll have to abandon Tambor.

Operation Anvil is suffering from the lack of mobility and the Chinese troops involved seem to be unable to move except at the slowest of speeds. The Japanese appear to have heavily reinforced Myitkyina. The British commanders are deciding whether or not to proceed with Anvil.

The retreat from Derby continues towards Perth.

John Doe walks over to Sylvia and sits down across from her. “Sylvia,” he says, “I'm sorry to have to tell you that a flight that Pete was one is overdue and listed as missing. This doesn't mean much at this point and I promise to keep you posted as soon as I know more.” He gets up and leaves, feeling horrible and not really knowing what to say or do to try to comfort her. She just stares blankly after him as he leaves her office.

Phil has met his officers and his opinion of Bill is even higher. They are a competent group and they say that the crew is a good one. The exec, Frank Field, is darned good, just like Bill said. The ship and her crew are ready to ship out and are just awaiting orders.

Bill, on the other hand, faces a different situation on the Helena. Some of the men think that she's a jinxed ship. Their reasoning for this is that her namesake was sunk earlier in the war. Most of the crew hasn't seen any action yet so Bill decides to follow the same routine that worked so well on the O'Bannon, drills, drills and more drills. Bill tells the assemblage of officers that he wants to drill the crew until they can perform their duties in their sleep. Bill is happy to have a cruiser, but misses O'Bannon and he hopes that his mail will be able to find him.

“Where are they? I left them here. You can see some of their gear lying around. What happened?” Pete is shocked that this is happening. Suddenly one of the men waves signaling down and “SHHH!” is heard. A Japanese patrol isn't far away. It's assumed that the men have been caught, but what can they do about it? The officer decides that they will tail the Japanese on foot, leaving Pete and 2 drivers with the jeeps that will trail even further back so as not to be heard. After moving slowly all day they come upon a body of a crewman. It appears that he's been bayoneted. A halt is called and the men take a break, though on guard. Suddenly there are a few shots heard and a little later they start to move again. It's not long before they spot 3 bodies, also crewmen. They wait for the jeeps to come up and the officer walks over to Pete and talks with him.

“OK,” he says, “According to Pete that accounts for all of the crew except the missing pilot, who we have no idea of where to look for him. Let's pack up and head back home.” They bury the bodies and go back to the other one and do the same for him and then they’re off.

The Russians claimed to have smashed a German counter attack in the Kuban S of Rostov.

The US commander in Europe, Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews was killed in a plane crash in Iceland.

American troops took Mateur, less than 50 miles NW of Tunis.

The Nicks visited Akyab again at night and scored a lone hit on the runway while 5 planes were damaged.

DMSs and MSWs are still busy sweeping the vast minefields around Wake. TF 1022 encountered a mine field along with prosecuting sonar contacts. An ASW attack 44 miles E of Wake by USN DDs damaged and drove off an IJN sub. The island got it's daily dosage of SBDs and sustained moderate damage to the airfield and light losses to the troops. Sub activity has been detected in the area surrounding Wake Island and the SBDs have been busy attacking and claiming a hit on one. Later an oil slick was detected. The transports carrying the troops are steaming in large racetrack patterns awaiting the word that the mines are cleared.

Kweiyang was bombed again and the damage was very light, as were the casualties. All of the Japanese planes departed intact.

Maloelap was bombed by 22 X PB4Y (9damaged) who did light damage to the airstrip and destroyed a Betty and a Mavis on the ground.

44 X B-25J attacked Jaluit and lost 2 planes downed and 10 damaged. The port was lightly damaged.

The Chinese continued the bombardment attacks on the Japanese at the road junction and Japanese losses were light.

Today the order was given to abandon the Tambor and she was scuttled. Without her pumps she was doomed and despite the best efforts of the crew there was just to much damage to repair.

Red and Cookie go to a bar for some lunch and a drink and who do they meet up with? “Hey, Red! Come on over here so I can show what we caught one day when we were fishing.” There are some submariners from the Tarpon here. The reunion is a happy affair and more than a couple of drinks are shared. Red enjoys seeing old acquaintances, but he wants to get out on the street to resume his search. Suddenly Lucky takes off towards the open door and just like that is gone. Red and Cookie vault out of their seats calling to the dog and Cookie tosses some money on the table and is gone. The submariners chase after them, leaving a man behind to settle their bill. Half way down the block the dog has stopped and is busily sniffing and being sniffed by another canine. Red and Cookie attach the leash to Lucky's collar and out of breath just look at each other and laugh. It seems that the dog has found himself a female and judging from how they're acting she's in heat. Red says, “What the hell, go for it boy.” He sits down and watches Lucky mount the other dog. “At least one of us is getting what he wants today,” Red says laughingly to Cookie. Tarpon's men arrive and they're laughing and cheering Lucky.

The Lamberton continues to struggle towards Midway, but her skipper has issued orders and everything that can float is ready to go into the water. He has confided in his exec that if they can't stop the flooding then tomorrow he'll give the order and they will scuttle their ship.

Pete's saviors stop for a rest and they silently eat something and drink some water. Nobody has talked much since they buried the bodies. Finding executed prisoners is a sobering thing and each man is dealing with it his own way. After a while they climb back into the jeeps and are off again heading to a base somewhere the men refer to as the junction.

Sylvia has told her parents about Pete and Milt tells her not to worry as Pete is a survivor. Her mother comforts her as best she can.

Though they are anchored Bill has his crew running drills and some of the men grumble about it. An old hand who has been in the Navy for over 10 years tells the gripers to stow it. “You'll be happy the new skipper drilled you until you knew what you were doing in your sleep. Do you think the Japanese will not have a few surprises for us in the future? Do your jobs well and live.”

Phil has Frank take the O'Bannon out and they join another DD as they patrol the approaches to Pearl Harbor. There is no such thing as a truly safe area in a war.

Hitler has delayed Operation Citadel, against the advice of his generals, so more Tiger and Panther tanks can be deployed.

Combat

The sweeping of the mines continued at Wake and USN DDs attacked subs in that vicinity too. Ed's BBs unloaded one more time before heading for Midway. They did moderate damage to the island's facilities and inflicted light casualties on the Japanese troops. The amphibious TF moved in to unload the troops at Wake and an LST hit a mine, suffering heavy damage. The defensive guns fired and the troops took very heavy losses during the landings. Later the MSW Finch was struck no less than 6 times by coastal artillery and an LCI struck a mine that sank it. The LST-26 has been ordered to make for Midway, but her survival is doubtful. Wake Island was attacked by the USN's air power and a lone SBD was damaged as they did moderate damage to the facilities and light casualties to the ground troops. Wake Island's defenders bombarded the invaders and inflicted light casualties on them. The initial attack by the American troops landing at Wake took very heavy losses as did the Japanese defenders. The island's defensive works were also damaged in the attack. The attack had to proceed before all the mines were cleared because the troops were becoming fatigued just waiting on the ships.

Kweiyang was bombarded again and the damage was negligible while a Helen was noted to be trailing smoke.

Myitkyina was hit heavily by 51 X Liberator VI and 42 X B-24D. Ground troops were thought to have sustained light casualties. No planes were damaged in the onslaught. The 4th Mixed Brigade was struck by 20 X B-25J and it sustained light losses. An hour later the unit was attacked again by 20 X B-25J and suffered moderately.

Maloelap was visited by 12 X PB4Y (7 damaged) who did light damage to the airfield and light losses were sustained by the ground troops.

Jaluit was attacked by 30 X B-25J (6 damaged). There were no ground troops injured and the port had light damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing, was raided by 19 X Blenheim and the unit had very light casualties. No planes were damaged in the attack.

The orders to abandon ship were given and then the DMS Lamberton was scuttled. Somehow the ship's skipper was the only loss in today's activities. The crew waits in rafts for their rescue which is only hours away.

As Ed's Old Gals head towards Midway to replenish he gets reports evaluating the effectiveness of the bombardments that they conducted. It seems that the Japanese dig deep and come out after the guns fall silent. Well, he thinks, at least we made them keep their heads down which cut down on casualties during the initial landings.

The 2 jeeps make slow time traveling at night and hiding by day. One of the men tells Pete that, “Japanese bombers prowl here. You wouldn't believe the range those things have. Anyway we play it safe as it's the smart play. If only our troops could push back and we could get a forward base for our planes we could really put a hurt on the Japanese.”

Red, Cookie and Lucky are searching again today and after a false alarm it's looking like another in a long line of fruitless forays.

Stalin is in great spirits today as all the news is good. The Germans are being battered and the Americans are agreeing to almost everything he wants except the second front. Churchill is a pain that will have to be dealt with in the future.

John Doe walks into the office and Sylvia looks up. He smiles and says, “Your husband is one tough cookie. He's very lucky too. A patrol picked him up and he immediately asked them to send a message so that you could know that he's OK. I could arrange transport for you to see him once he's returned to Cooktown, if you'd like. I might even be able to talk my boss into letting him come here. We'll see.”

Sylvia says, “Thank you so much for telling me.” He leaves and she calls one of the hotel's employees and asks that she watch things for a bit. Sylvia then goes to her parent's house to tell them the good news. Upon hearing this Milt declares that he'll walk her back to the hotel and have a drink to celebrate the good news. Jac goes along to keep him in line saying, “A drink and no more mister.”

The British broke the German defensive line held by the 5 Pz Army S of Tunis.

Combat

Kweiyang was raided by Japanese planes again and the damage was negligible while a Helen was damaged. There were no casualties reported by the Chinese.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, guarding the river crossing was hit by 25 X B-25J and had extremely light casualties. All of the planes departed safely.

The AP Van Landsberge hit 2 mines and was heavily damaged and burning as she was unloading troops and supplies at Wake. The fires are light, but without effective pumps there is no water pressure to fight the flames and no pumps to fight the flooding makes her survival dicey. Another vessel has passed fire hoses over to her and orders for the stricken AP to make for Midway have been issued. An air attack did moderate damage to the base and inflicted light casualties on the Japanese troops. A Japanese artillery bombardment on Wake's invaders caused the Americans to have light casualties. The Americans continued to attack Japanese positions on Wake and they managed to further damage the defensive network while inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese. American loses were also heavy.

Ed has gone over every aspect of the naval bombardments at Wake and has decided that there was nothing more that could be done. If the Japanese dig deeply, then nothing short of direct hits will root them out. The feet on the ground will have to do their usual dirty work to take real estate. He does know that facilities and supplies suffered due to the bombardments and given good aerial recon he believes that the accuracy of his ships will only improve.

Another day and another futile search was conducted by Red, Cookie and Lucky. “Well if I'm the good luck charm of the Palawan then the ship is in big trouble,” says Red. He's not giving up, but he is loosing hope. The only one to thoroughly enjoy these outings is Lucky. Almost as if on cue there is a call, “Hey Red, Cookie, join us for a beer? You’re buying the first round.” Sure enough it's a few of the guys from the Tarpon.

There's been no further word concerning Pete, but Sylvia is upbeat and so are her parents.

The jeeps covered lots of ground last night, but they're still forced into hiding during the day as a passing Betty testifies. Pete is rapidly regaining his strength, but mentally he's suffering as he now has more reasons than ever to harbor ill feelings towards the Japanese. He does make a decision that he's had enough adventure for one war and that he'll be more than pleased to host all the agents his hotel can manage, but he'll stay in Brisbane with his wife.

Hitler went to Berlin for the funeral of Viktor Lutze.

The DMSs and MSWs continued their sweeping of mines at Wake Island. The DMSs also detected and attacked an IJN sub and claimed multiple hits. Later, after having lost the contact the DMSs picked it up again and resumed the attack. They again believed that they scored multiple hits. The troops made little progress against the Japanese today and both sides are licking their wounds. Allied commanders are prepared to bring in their reserves if needed.

16 X PB4Y (10 damaged) raided Maloelap and did light damage to the airbase.

34 X B-25J made an attack on Jaluit doing light damage to the port, losing a plane and having 8 more damaged.

The Japanese fleet that was moving on Wake seemed to have retired when they were spotted by SBDs on patrol yesterday. Many are viewing this as a golden opportunity to bring the IJN to battle and wanted to pursue, but the orders were support the invasion forces and protect them.

There has been no word concerning Pete and Sylvia is getting worried.

The recon unit spent the night backtracking in an effort to avoid Japanese patrols. Pete made a comment about not wanting to run out of food and water that drew a look from the others in the jeep. The fact is that they've decided to continue back towards base during the day today because the food and water along with the gas is running low. Pete wonders if his rescue will lead to another adventure and he thinks that he's getting tired of this kind of stuff.

FDR and PM Curtain have agreed to the plans put forth by the American and Australian generals. The name will be Operation Hedge cutter. The troops are resting and are being refitted with more on the way. London continues to claim that North Africa, India and Home Island Defense leaves them with nothing to help. This only further serves to infuriate PM Curtain. He has been heard to mention that the next time the British come calling to have their behinds saved I hope it's me to give them their answer.

Red, Cookie and Lucky resumed the search today and still nothing. Red says that by the time he finds this girl he'll be to old to care. Cookie laughs and tells him that he shouldn't give up hope.

The British Army took Tunis today.

Hitler said that U-boat warfare will be stepped up. “Black May” is unfolding for the U-boats.

11 X PB4Y attacked Maloelap and did light damage to the airstrip in return for 6 damaged bombers.

41 X B-25J raided Jaluit and suffered 10 planes damaged for no tangible return.

20 X B-25J attacked the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing and inflicted moderate losses and all bombers retired without damage.

The SS Seawolf attacked MSWs 43 miles SW of Tulagi and hit one of them with a torpedo. The vessel sank within minutes and the other MSWs left the survivors in the water as they ran as fast as they could from the area. Seawolf will return to base for repairs as the few depth charges dropped on her rattled her seams and she has some flooding and systems off line.

Ground combat on the road to Chungking saw the Chinese attack the Japanese and suffer horrendous losses for no gain. The Japanese had moderately heavy casualties in the battle. The Chinese are trying to link up with other friendly forces at the road junction.

Operation Left hook has gotten final approval and is scheduled to commence it's initial deployments in mid August. The hopes ride high that this will throw a monkey wrench into Japanese defensive plans while utilizing a minimum of assets.

“Hello, that's a beautiful dog that you have,” says a young lady. Red immediately turns excitedly only to see that this isn't who he hoped for. He thanks her on behalf of Lucky, who is busily sniffing away as only dogs do. She giggles as she moves back from him exclaiming, “His nose is cold!” Red realizes that he is in a similar situation as before and decides that he will ask this girl if he can see her again as they chat away very comfortably. Cookie is walking towards them and notes what is going on so he just waves and turns away. He'll hear all about this tonight, when and if Red returns to the Palawan.

The action at Wake continues and though things are dicey the American commanders believe that they will triumph. The engineers wait the orders to move in and create a base capable of supporting the operations expected.

Pete watches in horror as a Betty bears down on them. The drivers of the jeeps are driving as erratically and fast as they can without crashing their vehicles. The drone of the twin engines grows to a and roar and then comes the chatter of the 2 machine guns mounted in the nose of the plane. The bullets stitch the ground and the pilot skillfully kicks his rudder so that the gunner's fire slews across the path of the darting jeeps. Then the plane passes them and the waist MGs join in as the nose gunner stops and finally it's the tail gunner's turn as the plane pulls out of it's shallow dive and the 20mm shells find 1 of the jeeps and it tumbles crazily throwing its passengers. The plane banks as it climbs and return and the same sequence is started again, except this time 2 bombs are dropped. The bombardier’s aiming is poor and the gunners don't manage to hit the second jeep. The plane again pulls out and heads off. The remaining jeep slows to a halt and they check to see if they're all OK. Then they return to the wreck of the other vehicle and check for survivors. 2 men are dead and the other is unconscious, but seems to be OK. They move him carefully to their jeep and move a short distance before hiding the vehicle. They then leave Pete to watch over their survivor or the wreck and proceed to bury their dead. After a while they manage to salvage some food and water. Since they know that their position is already known to the Japanese they break radio silence and inform their HQs of their status. They then move on putting some distance between them and the spot where they transmitted from. Then they hunker down for the rest of the day in the hopes of getting some unmolested rest before heading out. They don't have far to go, but will not travel by daylight anymore.

That night John Doe returns to the hotel and spots Sylvia and tells her that Pete is OK and that he'll be back in friendly territory soon.

Thousands of Korean-Americans petition to have their status converted from enemy aliens to friendly aliens. In December it will be granted.

Combat

The mine fields at Wake Island continue to be swept. Combat at Wake Island was fierce again today as the Americans pushed a little further inland, reducing the Japanese defensive positions there. American losses were heavy and the Japanese were thought to have sustained very heavy casualties.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF, at the river crossing, was bombed by 21 X B-25J, all of which departed safely, and the Japanese suffered light losses.

At the road junction the Chinese conducted another bombardment attack, inflicting light casualties on the Japanese troops.

As dawn approached the jeep was stopped by an Australian soldier. He took one look at the men in the jeep and said, “You look like bloody hell.” He directed them to the area that they're looking for and as they continue down the road Pete marvels at the number of men and machines that he sees. They stop at an aid station and a medic looks at the wounded man and directs them to a forward area medical facility a few miles down the road. Once they reach it they leave the man in the care of the doctor and nurses there and go looking for the recon unit.

Red resumed his walking, but this time he has feminine company as the girl from yesterday has joined him. She has a dog too and the 4 of them stroll along going nowhere in particular as Red and Claire talk as if they've known one another for years. He thinks that he's very comfortable with this girl and that she's pretty. Claire likes Red too and finds herself comfortable in his company. They stop for something to eat and and before they know it the day is drawing to a close. Red walks her home and asks if he can see her again tomorrow and she says yes.

130K Germans and 120K Italians surrendered in Tunisia. General von Arnim along with 25 other Axis generals were captured.

27 X Helen roared in on the 58th Chinese Corps 32 miles NE of the road junction and inflicted light casualties while suffering 4 damaged planes.

Another American push at Wake Island further reduced the defender's fortifications and the Japanese had heavy losses while the Americans did too. The Americans are worn out and will take a breather before their final big push to take the island. The Japanese are once again proving to be a stubborn opponent.

The AS Fulton has berthed at Perth and sub ops will commence from this base as the boats arrive.

The Chinese got their first shipment of P-40Ns and once they are operational the Japanese will get a surprise over Chungking.

The brass has targeted August for the start of the push against the Japanese. The action will be on many fronts and it's hoped that the pressure will cause a general collapse somewhere and that the skies will finally be under Allied control. Seizing the initiative and holding it is the goal. Forcing the KB out and making it fight on Allied terms is one of the objectives. FDR listens to all of the plans and details and finally says, “Gentlemen, I firmly believe that having survived the opening phases of this war, flexing our muscle and preparing for this was the second phase and soon we will open with what I trust will be the beginning of the end for the Japanese Empire. Thank you all.” The strain of the office and the nation being at war are taking a toll on Roosevelt.

Red and Cookie sit on a hatch cover and Red is talking about Claire nonstop. Cookie dutifully listens and is glad that the gloomy mood seems to have been lifted. Lucky won't be going along today as Red has plans for a nice lunch where dogs wouldn't be appreciated so Cookie volunteers to watch the pooch.

Pete has managed to sleep most of the day after almost drowning himself from the inside out. Food, water and relative safety are wonderful things to have. Now his thoughts turn to Sylvia and getting word to her. A short time later a man approaches and tells him that word will be passed to his wife in the morning that he's OK. The man then asks Pete what happened to the training flight.

“There's not a lot that I can tell you as I was sleeping and then we were going down. The pilot was searching for water and never returned. The Japanese killed the others and here I am. While we're on the subject of me, I'd like to make it known that I'm done with this war. I'm willing to teach navigation in a classroom that's located in Brisbane and that's it. Of course if the Japanese show up around Brisbane I might be willing to do more. As of right now I quit and I want transport home. If you won't supply it then I'll make my own way back.” With that Pete excuses himself and goes in search of some food.

Pagan's resource centers were attacked by 51 X Liberator VI and 32 X B-24D and took moderate damage while all of the planes dumped their loads and departed safely.

The Maizuru 2nd SNLF, at Wake Island, was hit by SBDs (2 damaged) and had moderate casualties. Then the 126th IJN Base Force was pounded by SBDs a little later and took it took light losses. Still another raid of SBDs struck at the 127th IJN Base Force and both sides had no losses.

A Chinese bombardment attack on the IJA at the road junction inflicted very light casualties.

Pete wakes up in the morning and manages to get a ride all the way to Charter Towers that's leaving within a couple of hours. It's not Brisbane, but it's a hell of a start. He manages a clean bucket of water to wash with and then he gets some food, stuffing his pockets with what he hasn't eaten and he manages to get and fill 2 canteens. The last thing he did before climbing into the truck's bed was that he left a message for the intel types telling them not to worry that he'd be back in Brisbane soon.

Stick and the rest of the Flying Deuces are restless and want to get airborne. They now know that they are assigned to Wake Island, if the Japanese are thrown out. This will put them on the front line of the Allied push into Japan's defenses and the prospect of combat has a sobering effect on most of the men.

Gunny is tired of waiting around and Slim tells him to relax and enjoy the war from a forgotten place. “Maybe our next assignment will come when the war is over,” he says knowing that they'll have no such luck.

Red and Claire are walking down the side of the road when suddenly there she is. The object of the fruitless and intensive search that drove him crazy. The funny thing is he doesn't even care as Claire asks him about the United States. He starts to tell her and then realizes that he left when he was so young and hasn't been back since there's not a lot he can tell her. Later she tells him about how her family left France and settled here. Her father hates the Americans and British, but now the Japanese and Germans have replaced them atop his list. She goes on to say that he's very much against Vichy and that it's a good thing they are here in Noumea where the Americans can protect them.

The USN conducted an attack on Maizuru 2nd SNLF at Wake Island inflicting light casualties and having a lone SBD go down. Another attack on 126th IJN Base Force caused moderate losses to the Japanese unit and an SBD was damaged. The 127th IJN Base Force was also hit and it had light losses and all of the Americans planes were unharmed. Both sides are catching their breath before the carnage on the ground resumes.

China continues to be a disaster in the making as the troops won't move.

People have tried to bribe him into giving them gas that they're not entitled to, but he's drawing the line and only gas can be bought with the appropriate stamps. Sandy happily does some chores around the house after she's done putting a load of wash through the wringer and then hanging them on the line. Even though spring comes later in the mountains it is getting warmer. She thinks of how much she loves it around here when everything turns green.

John Doe smiles as he walks up to Sylvia and says, “Your husband has seen fit to arrange his own transport as I doubt he trusts our organization. He's fine and he has announced that he's done with the war unless the Japs arrive on his doorstep. After all he's been through nobody is about to stand in his way so he's all yours again. Thanks for being so good about all of this. I hope that when I get home I can find somebody like you.” With that Mr. Doe turns and starts to walk away as Sylvia thanks him for the news.

Sylvia walks into the pub where her father and his friends are and announces, “The next round of drinks are on Mr. Pete Myers, who happens to be on his way home at this very moment.” The men cheer and her father gives her a wink.

An air attack on Maizuru 2nd SNLF at Wake produced very light casualties and all planes departed safely. The 127th IJN Base Force was then visited by USN aircraft and an SBD was damaged while the Japanese unit had moderate casualties. The ground forces continue to trade small arms fire, but they all remain in their holes.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was hit by 20 X B-25J and sustained light losses. No planes were damaged in the raid.

A Chinese bombardment attack at the road junction saw the Japanese have light casualties.

A PBY attacked an IJN sub about 340 miles SW of Johnson Island. There were no reports of hits claimed.

At the Pentagon Naval brass are trying to adhere to a schedule of yard time for warships. This is difficult to do as the tempo for ops is increasing.

The British are calling Operation Anvil many things, but not a failure. The Japanese reaction to an advance has shown that unless overwhelming force can be applied an amphibious operation is called for to unlock the CBI region of it's stalemate.

The truck continues to rumble it's way towards Charter Towers, making stops for fuel, food and the most welcomed comfort stops. Riding in the back of the truck is a bone jarring experience, but Pete doesn't care because he's going home.

Red shows up promptly at Claire's home and her mother answers the door. Claire's father tells him that his Nazi dog will have to stay outside, behind the house. “I'm sorry that I didn't know that Weimaraners are of German origin. My father hates all things German. Please try to tolerate him,” she says.

Red nods to her and says, “It'll be OK for a little while. Lucky isn't used to being tied up so I won't stay long.” With that they lead the dog into the yard and tie him to a tree. Red goes inside and has a very uncomfortable time because of Claire's father. The man tells Red that it's wrong to have a Nazi dog and Red tries to remain calm, but the man goes on and on. He then accuses Red of being pro German the young man rises out of his seat and says, “I'm terribly sorry, but I'll not be insulted in this way any longer. You sit here and go on and on about how superior the French and their culture are and yet you're a lousy host. I'm sorry Claire, but I'll be going now and I won't ever come back here again. Can I see you tomorrow?” She nods yes and starts crying. Red gets Lucky and stomps off thinking about how insulted he feels. Upon his return to the Palawan he tells Cookie all about it.

“It takes all kinds,” Cookie says.

An air attack on the Maizuru 2nd SNLF at Wake Island inflicted moderate losses on the unit and no USN planes were damaged or lost. The attack on the 126th IJN Base Force produced light casualties for the Japanese. While the attack on the 127th IJN Base Force resulted in a damaged SBD and light Japanese losses. The island fell to a determined assault by the Americans immediately following the air raids. The Japanese sustained very heavy casualties and were forced out of their defensive positions at the port and airfield. The Americans had heavy casualties in the attack. Now comes the time for the follow on forces to land and make Wake an operational base for the Allies while mop up operations against the stubborn Japanese troops continues.

The IJA has finally arrived at Sining and commenced a bombardment that resulted in negligible casualties among the Chinese troops there. The Chinese are cut off and it's just a matter of time until their defense collapses.

The Chinese continue to bombard the IJA troops at the rail junction, inflicting light casualties on them.

LST-26 limped into Midway today and the repair ship berthed there immediately set to work to save the crippled vessel. The base commander upon surveying the LST has decided to put the crew in for a unit citation for saving their vessel.

VMF-222 flew into Wake's shattered airfield from the CVE Long Island and the pilots immediately missed the comforts of the ship. Until the Sea Bees get to work they'll be sleeping under the wings of the Corsairs. The reality of war and it's discomforts are beginning to set in and the men grumble about it. Slim, though happy to finally be in the fight, wishes that he had a tent to sleep in. The Sea Bees are busily getting the airfield in functional condition, sleeping accommodations for pilots be damned.

Pete has begun to wonder if the bouncing truck will ever reach it's destination. He's been down this road before and hopes never to need it again unless it's for pleasure.

Red meets Claire in the afternoon and she tells him that her father doesn't want her seeing him. She goes on saying that though she really enjoys his company, she has to live at home with her parents and who knows where Red will be tomorrow. That being said she gives him a hug, peck on the cheek and with tears in her eyes leaves. Red is dumbfounded and looks at Lucky who is standing there and says, “Women are to complicated for me.” They 2 pals resume their walk and join with Cookie as they have a beer and a water for their 4 legged friend.

The brass in Washington will now decide if they should go after Marcus Island or turn their attentions elsewhere. Recon flights will commence soon and provide the information that will provide the answers.

A Japanese bombardment 28 miles NE of the road junction resulted in heavy Chinese losses. Chinese gunners at the road junction responded by raining shells on the Japanese troops who had light losses.

At Sining an artillery bombardment inflicted light casualties on the Chinese defenders.

At Wake Island the mopping up of the remaining Japanese forces resulted in heavy Japanese casualties and moderate losses for the Americans. Starving, thirsty and virtually out of ammunition fanatical Japanese troops continue the fight and the American troops struggle to understand as each foot of the tiny island is contested.

Stick sits in the cockpit of his Corsair awaiting clearance for takeoff. He's scheduled as part of the CAP this morning. The carriers will need to move off to replenish soon and Japanese attacks are expected on the unloading AKs and APs. The Flying Deuces are eager to get a chance at the Japanese. Hours later after landing Stick stretches after climbing down from his plane. It was a boring flight as the Japanese never appeared. He managed to remember to constantly scan all around looking for unwanted guests and not to fly straight and level for long. These are things that in time will become second nature, but for now he's making the effort not to screw up.

The truck continues to roll down the road with each passing mile bringing Pete closer to home and the end of his war. A Bettys was spotted today in distance and luckily it didn't see them or had spotted bigger game.

Sandy has a few letters from Bill and she tells Dave that Bill is doing fine and that he misses them.

Red lazily spends the afternoon on the Palawan after scraping peeling paint all morning. He's relieved that the painting is being done by some other men as he aches from his labors. Cookie is ashore in search of some fresh vegetables.

Stalin dissolved the Komintern, Communist International, working for world revolution today.

Artillery exchanges at the road junction resulted in both the Chinese and Japanese having light casualties.

There were many reports of sub activity around Wake Island resulting in planes attacking subs and some oil slicks have been spotted, but nothing is conformed.

Stick is speaking to the crew chief that is responsible for his plane. The man explains that they're waxing his plane and it'll give Stick about 10-12 miles per hour more. The ground crew has taken a liking to Stick because he's taken an interest in them and the fact that a bottle of bourbon was given to them didn't hurt the growing relationship either.

Slim writes a letter to Joe Orsini's parents and though it's difficult he wanted to tell them that Joe is missed. He asks about their other son, Lou and about life on the home front.

Sandy sits on the front porch enjoying a beautiful afternoon as she writes a letter to Bill. She tells him all about how different things have become due to the war and how much she misses him.

The truck arrived at Charter Towers and Pete thanked the driver and his assistant for the lift before he set off to find operations at the airfield. Once there he's told that they were expecting him and that he's to be driven to Townsville where he will catch a train bound for Brisbane. The man nods as Pete thanks him. As the jeep bounces along the road Pete wonders who's hand was in this and why they would even bother for him.

The Chinese are clamoring for more B-25Js and fighters to escort them. They point out that the Mitchells that they've been given are being put to good use and Washington agrees. The diplomats even go so far as to remind the Chinese envoy that they remember the promises made and that a new version of the P-40 will soon be made available to them.

Maloelap was raided by 23 X PB4Y and the airbase sustained light damage and casualties were thought to have been light also. A bomber went down and 6 others were damaged by ground fire.

Chinese troops at Sining continued to undergo shelling from a growing Japanese force. Casualties were light today.

At the road junction the Japanese forces suffered light losses due to the Chinese artillery barrages.

At Wake Island the continuing mop up operation inflicted heavy casualties on the fanatical Japanese defenders while the Americans had heavy losses too.

Red can't find Lucky anywhere and nobody seems to know where the dog is. Red has learned that the dog is ruled by his stomach and wonders if “The Great Gray Hunter” caught the scent of something and left the ship. He lets Cookie know that he's off to look for the dog. An hour later there he is rolling on the ground, extremely happy. It seems that the dog caught, killed and ate some kind of small mammal and now is rolling in what's left of the kill. This behavior is something that Red can't understand.

Today Stick flew in the afternoon CAP and it was another boring flight. Other than scanning the sky and keeping formation one could fall asleep. He wonders why his squadron hasn't been cleared to at least strafe the Japanese still on the island.

Pete waits for a train as he missed the last one by mere minutes. The driver offered to chase the train to try and get him on it, but Pete thanked him and said he'd just wait. Sitting on the bench gives Pete time to reflect on things that have happened to him and his resolve to stay out of the active war effort is firm. Soon he'll be back home. That has a nice warm feeling to it and he can't wait to hug Sylvia.

Ed starts his staff on working on Operation King as his BBs will be needed for it. The immediate priority is getting some of the old gals refit. He looks at the AA armaments on the upgraded ships and thinks back to the pre-war Navy and the Chicago Pianos that they sported instead of bristling with 20mm guns. What a difference between things like that and the improved radar sets. The rapidly expanding USN astounds him the more he thinks about it.

Another letter from her brother and Elaine reads it after her mother finishes it. She wishes that somebody wrote to her as all of her friends get letters from servicemen all of the time. She just hasn't met anyone that she likes enough to get to know better.

Myitkyina was attacked by 24 X Blenheim, 47 X Liberator VI, 61 X B-25J Mitchell, 48 X B-24D and 67 X P-38G Lightning. The raid met with only light and inaccurate AA that resulted in a Liberator VI and a B-25J being damaged. Ground losses were thought to have been light and damage to the base was very heavy, with many secondary explosions observed.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was hit by 30 X B-25J and sustained light casualties. No aircraft were damaged.

Elements of the 110th Division, at the road junction, were raided by 9 X B-25J and 7 X P-40N who inflicted very light losses. This was the first combat mission flown by the Chinese using the P-40N. Later Chinese artillery added lightly to the Japanese casualty list.

A Japanese bombardment attack 19 miles NE of the road junction resulted in heavy Chinese casualties.

Sining's cut off defenders had light casualties due to the continued shelling of their positions.

Chinese troops finally started marching towards the road junction from Chungking last night. It is hoped that these forces will be enough to dislodge the Japanese troops blocking the Chinese line of retreat.

The India/Burma line remains static with no end in sight to the stalemate that seems suitable to both sides for the present time. Allied commanders hope to increase the number of air raids they can stage in both size and frequency, though the later depends on the weather.

Stick has spent the day on the flight line as he's on standby in case an incoming raid is detected. He watches in fascination as the ground crews swarm over planes and asks them if they ever get any rest. “Not that much as you fly boys need working machines,” was the answer. Stick just hung around as his services in the air weren't required.

FDR sits and listens to his admirals and generals and then he asks, “Are we going for Marcus Island next?” The answer is a maybe as recon flights are needed out of Wake so see what the Japanese have there. The answer will come soon. In the meantime Operation King continues to gather steam as the stream of the tools of war build up at the staging area.

The troops in Australia continue their shift and when this ends it is hoped that a renewed effort to oust the Japanese will succeed.

Pete sits on a train bound for Brisbane and he dozes as the countryside flashes by and the rhythmic sound of the train itself it like a lullaby to the weary traveler.

Stalin asks his Far Eastern generals about the Americans and when they will take advantage of his generosity. No definite answer can be given as of yet so he turns his attention back to the Germans and how to keep them reeling.

Combat

The SS KXIV was on a mission to sow mines at Rangoon, but ran into a Japanese mine instead. The force of the explosion tore open her hull and she rapidly flooded taking all hands with her to the bottom.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF at the river crossing was visited by 25 X B-25J and sustained moderate casualties courtesy of the Chinese. The Chinese air crews are getting better at their jobs and the icing on the cake was that all planes retired undamaged.

At the road junction the Chinese took light losses due to the Japanese artillery bombardment.

“Marcus Island won't be a pushover and we have reason to believe that the Japanese are going to beef up the defenses there in short order,” says the general. The men in the room look at one another.

Finally FDR breaks the silence and says, “Let us keep an eye on Marcus while Operation King gets top priority for now. What about Australia and the Aleutians?” he asks. After lengthy discussion FDR seems satisfied that his promises to PM Curtain are being kept and he decides to go even further than originally planned. The logic is that to break the Japanese hold on Australia is needed to threaten their line of supply from the DEI to Japan. The Aleutians are progressing as planned and so far the Soviets are keeping their word.

Slim is still content to keep doing the waiting part of warfare as the 2nd Marines can't do anything without transport. Gunny stops by and the 2 of them drink the 2 bottle of Coca Cola that Gunny brought with him.

“Could you show me how to do that?” asks Stick to the crew chief, “I won't get in the way, but I really want to learn that stuff. I always used to fix my uncle's car before I joined the Marines.”

“Sure, why not. As long as we're not buried in work it'll be OK. Once these planes start getting some serious time in the air they'll get tired and our workload will be greatly increased, but until then OK.” With that Stick follows the man over to a plane that's being worked on.

The train will make it to Rockhampton shortly and then late tonight, Brisbane. Pete thinks that with any luck he can sleep in his own bed tomorrow.
