Which Matrixgame should I order?

I prefer:

-Many scenarios
-Low unit density
-Low turn number

In short: relatively few decisions per game, but every single one important, like in Chess.

Airborne Assault series, especially Battle for the Bulge.

While it has lots of units, they are under command of AI subordinates, so, while there are companies represented on map, you can give orders to bigger units like companies and brigades. This means that you don't have to move every single unit by hand.

You might mention a preference for time period to narrow down the list. Matrix has it all covered.

I see; I am not so fond of the hands-off system, though.

I like to move every single unit, read: every single unit out of 20 or so, rather than 500. And every single move should be critical, as in: one mistake may well lose the game.

John Tiller's Campaign Series.

Like chess, it is easy to learn but difficult to master.

It has hundreds of scenarios covering the whole war. Some small, some large, many inbetween.

For fewer units, that would probably rule out most grand strategy games with economics, politics plus the military. So going with the tactical to operational scale I would second Pethos suggestion and add also TOAW and Steel Panthers. If you have never played any of these then you are missing out. Each have stood the test of time and have a wide range of varying sized sceanrios.

One or more of the Close Combat titles might be a good bet also.

How come this guy Tesuji has Oleg's Avatar?
I still suspect he might be a bot.

That means nothing. There are several folks here who share the same avatar (including myself and another bloke).

While we unfortunately have good reason for suspecting new members are often spambots, Tesuji appears to be legit in this particular case.

I hate to say it, but on those criteria I think your best bet is probably actually one of somebody else's games, something from the HPS 'Squad Battles' series.

Battlefield Academy....without doubt...The Bulge game I imagine is more than your asking for....superb game but can't see how it fit's your critera....

Sqaud Battles is another...or wait for the Matrix's CoH game to come out as I bet that will fit the bill nicely....

there will be a Demo out soon of Panzer Command: Ostfront. It might fit your bill. Some scenarios have more units than you prefer, but others do not. Turn numbers vary. I think the shortest I've played was around 7 or 8 turns (unusual) I've played a few over 30 turns. most for me fall in the 15-25 turns. It's not likely that any single move will be a killer though.

But check the demo when it's released, it should give you an idea as to whethers it fits your criteria.

thanks,
Rick

Thanks for trusting me to be real.

There´s a generic avatar list; creating one from scratch is too fiddly.

Apology accepted.

In fact, this was the first time in 15 yrs internet posting that I was taken for a spambot; found it hilarious.

Thanks to everybody for all the advice.

As to a grand strategic game with few pieces: In principle, it would be possible (army sized units etc).

Why I like smaller scens better: I think the large ones can´t be played in a perfectionist style, or a single game will take years.

Mr Tesuji,
Glad to have you here. For a newblette such as yourself I recommend the following important basic-training simulators;

There is a reason why chess has only 16 pieces per side.

Of course, there is a chess variant with 400 pieces for each; it´s just not very playable, like monster wargames.

Edit: Though, otoh, it´s the only game I know that has a 'Blind Dog' and a 'Chicken General' piece.

I wonder why strategic games almost always have to include moving individual divisions or even brigades.

Of course you coild always try and Play "Uckers",on the face of it a very ordinary game that looks exactly like Ludo, but how wrong you can be.I have seen blood shed over a game of uckers, especially after an "8 piece dicking!"

You might look at Conquest Medieval Realms. It's simple and chess like but fun and the maps are random so always new. It may be more turns than what you are looking for though.

That 400 piece set does look intriguing. Ill put it on the queue.

No. Especially on computer where apparently monsters like WiTE still calculate combat on much lower level than shown by counters, so having counters for individual brigades or divisions doesn't really add anything besides making the player micromanage way below his command level.

I love questions like this. How do you expect us to know if you do not or can not find your own. If you take a sugestion from a poster here and do not like the game they suggest? Do not worry you might get lucky and get one of those rare folks who just LOVE to offer ideas to people.

However good luck in your search
