What are some key improvements ATG has over the original AT game ?
Has it made ATG a better game in general to play than the original ?

key improvements/changes I have found:
* don't know how or why, but AI is much tougher to beat - read some of henri51's threads
* diplomacy is improved over previous version - you can have human or AI allies, you start games at peace, then based on your relative military strength, AI will or won't declare war on you.
* ATG map graphics have more terrain types, better looking graphics
* ATG random maps are better constructed and more balanced - no more of those freaky continents or weird islands you could get in AT
* for me, the ATG editor is better to use - still a pretty formidable tool with a steep learning curve, but if you know how to use the AT editor, you should have no problem with ATG editor.

Compared to the original, ATG is a tougher game to beat, and a better game to play.
cheers,

+1 "Compared to the original, ATG is a tougher game to beat, and a better game to play."

Re "you can have human or AI allies": Not possible for a human player to be allied with an AI player, though you can have the AI allied with all other AI players.

Re "read some of henri51's threads": Caution--henri51's ongoing AAR and other threads are based, if I'm not mistaken, on his experience with the original 2.00 version and not the current 2.01 version (2.02 will be released soon). That said, as I've pointed out elsewhere, defense is generally stronger in ATG. The AI is relentless but can be beaten by someone who has learned the ATG game system. Noobs to AT/ATG will experience some tough games until they learn how everything works together. Stick with it, learn, adapt and overcome.

Note: Never depend on just one person's opinion, including my own.

Webizen, I have played with allied AI - you can pre-set alliances in the game editor before the game starts. It worked fine for me. (haven't tried it since installing the 2nd patch - I'll give it a look this weekend).
cheers,

If you check the ALLIED AI option setting up your game, all the AIs will be allied with each other. Human players can not be allies with an AI player. I suppose almost anything is possible with the editor but I'm talking standard games, not customized games using the editor. Edited my original post to be more clear about that.
