Hi all,

Oh my...

quote:

USAF Indefinitely Grounds F-22 Raptors

By DefenseNews

The On-Board Oxygen Generating System has been under investigation since a November 2010 crash in Alaska:

The U.S. Air Force has grounded all of its F-22 Raptors until further notice because of potential malfunctions in the fighter jets' oxygen-generation system.

Gen. William Fraser, commander of U.S. Air Combat Command, ordered a stand-down of the 165-plane fleet May 3, ACC spokeswoman Capt. Jennifer Ferrau said. Ferrau didn't immediately know how long the Raptors will be out of service.

he On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) has been under investigation since an F-22 crashed in November just outside Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Until the stand-down, Raptor sorties had been restricted to an altitude of 25,000 feet or below for training missions because of the potential malfunctions.

The limits were "designed for mishap prevention and is a prudent measure to ensure the OBOGS are operating safely," ACC spokesman Col. William Nichols said in March, when the command first publicly disclosed the investigation.

An OBOGS malfunction can be potentially life-threatening, said Hans Weber, who sat on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's Research, Engineering and Development Advisory Committee, and is president of Tecop International, a San Diego consulting firm.

"It's a big deal if you're at high altitude and you run out of oxygen," Weber said in a March interview.

At 50,000 feet, a human being has less than 10 seconds of useful consciousness, he said. The 25,000-foot altitude restriction would allow the pilot to quickly dive below 18,000 feet, where the atmosphere has enough oxygen to ensure prolonged survival in case of an emergency.

"It would take you so long when you're way up high, you may black out before you make it to a safe altitude," Weber said.

Good idea on the USAF house rules to limit the F22 to 25,000 feet for CAP, escort or sweep purposes. Wouldn't want to be gamey.

Just got an email from a friend of mine in Alabama. The tornado that went through Cullman went within about 0.2 miles of their house. They're just now getting power back up there-2 weeks later.

John, so you do Patent research ? Do you have a particular area you practice in ?

Specialized mostly in the tech stuff, like communications hardware and software, some semiconductor fab thingies, optical applications of all kinds, that kinda stuff. But patent firms have to do what the client wants, so I've done pocket potato peelers for Ron Popeil and convertable baby crib/strollers. Heck, I can probably get you a patent on a pencil, if I do the claims right. Patent Searches are a whole different body of law. I don't recommend doing searches. Let the USPTO do them during examination. Unless there's a bunch of bucks at issue and competitors with big pockets.

Wonder if Ms DivePac's underwear is covered Down-Under. Be glad to take a closer look. 'Course if MS DivePac is a bit shy, will graciously accept a substitute model; 60 kilos max, redhead (or auburn, or strawberry), 22 - 28, munchkins, no tats (well, maybe a little one in a secret place), bold, and coquettishly wicked.

Ciao. John

Lots of folks up there got bad whacked. Took as much boxed and canned food as my car could fit, and every stuffed teddy bear I could find, up to my sister Jeanne in Prattville. She spent mothers day weekend, along with her daughters and grandchildren, in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham distributing everything to those most effected. This mother's day actually meant something to a lot of mothers.

Leaving for the next exercise tomorrow. Will show up during evenings to give my respects to THE THREAD!!!

Good night friends

You're getting a lot of exercise these days, Per! What happened? Did the snow melt or something?

A couple of weeks ago, yes

We're actually having something of an early summer right now. Sunny and 22C (72F).

... and I'm not part of the training audience this time. We're holding a tactics exercise with our soon-to-be LTCs, hitting them with an endless stream of tactical problems to be solved (out in the field) in a short time. Beers and cognac in the hotel bar in the evening. Good week.

Seems we have a little different customs. We're having Mother's Day the last Sunday in May (every year).

Hope you had a good one though

Always the second Sunday in May here for Mother's Day, and the 3rd Sunday in June for Father's Day.
