I was watching Band of Brothers episode 4 tonight (the Market-Garden) episode, and it struck me as peculiar that the production company was able to acquire multiple examples of Shermans and Cromwells, but only one copy each of all German vehicles. I counted a Tiger, a Jagdpanther, a Marder III, a Stug IV, a halftrack with a Pak 40 and a scout car. Only one of each, though...

Pretty damn good as it is though, dontcha think? I hated all those war movies with US tanks playing as Germans.

True, but still... They couldn't make two Stug's instead of one Stug and one Jagdpanther (the latter being comparatively rarer than the former)?

I was always impressed by the old move "Force 10 from Navarone" (the one where they have to blow up a dam before the Nazees can cross it in force) and the German "Tanks" were in actuality Russian T-34's! That was definately a step up from using American Pershings as "German Tigers"

Then again.....like US models.....when you have true "Mass" production, you get plenty of material to work with....unlike the German models.

In other news, I found out today that Mrs. McDull (my former friend at my soon-to-be-former job) broke off her connection on Facebook with another woman, for no other reason than the fact that I'm friends with her.

I've never wanted to have any connection outside of work with McD, but she seems to think I'd be trying to indirectly stalk her or something. Very strange...

Is this the same person who you had the "incident" with at work where she got all offended and such?

It's up at Payne field now and it's great

yup......Was wondering when you'd make your way up to it. I got to see the P-40, Me-109, Storch and best of all, the I-16 fly last summer.

I put all the pics up here a while back.

Yes. It's scary how she's turned out to be; looking forward to the end of my association with the hospital...

Like I said earlier, I think this is good for you. You need some distance from that craziness.

Hi all,

Not a bubble, Leo. The definition of a bubble canopy is that it sits on top of the fuselage, allowing unobstructed vision to the rear. The Mk I Spitfire does have a bubble-like canopy, but it's in-line with the fuselage, and blocks the pilot's view to the rear.

Ahh... OK... I see... the "proper" bubble canopy would only be later war Spitfires, Typhoons, P-51D, later P-47D... etc...

Nonetheless even the Spitfire early "bubble" was so much better than German 109...

Leo "Apollo11"

The earlier predecessor of the true "US" style bubble was called the "Malcolm hood" and appeared on earlier/mid grade Spit varients. IIRC, it was a bulged canopy, similar to, but not quite a true "bubble" canopy.

There may be some confusion about the "bubble" on the Spit. Indeed the P-51B had the same model of earlier "bubble" , called The Malcom hood. It was added to a Standard "green house" or "Birdcage" canopy to give the pilot a little more headroom (and some verticle vizability). Basically , it's a standard canopy with a bubble on top. This was especially appreciated by American pilots flying earlier Spitefires under reverse lendlease.

If you look at the Tiger's that have been used (I believe they first appeared in `Kelly's Hero's') are muck-ups on T-34 chassis's.
