Gang,

Is there a chance some of you would be interested in creating a new and improved game manual? This would be titled differently from the original manual that comes with the game now and would include player input from the community.

I would be more than happy to take on the project and create a base doc to start with if I could get some minor assistance from some of you. I would hope that improved documentation will increase the appeal of the game and maybe increase the player base.

One thing we might need is some answers from the developers if the community cannot figure out or come to an agreement on a specific detail.

Any interest or is it a waste of time?

I would be interested. I think input from the community is a good idea.

Agreed and happy to contribute.

However at the moment without any input from the developers it is in a lot of instances going to be a case of making educated guesses at what the answers should be, some more obvious than others and assumptions that things are working as designed rather than being bugs.

Having read the manual about 4 times I reckon almost everything is there.

A better idea is to list omissions and errors and bad english have a new manual included in the patch.

Would it be possible to get an editable version of the existing manual, make correctrions and issue as Rev 1? That would save a lot of time.

On second thought, I would like to add a hotkey list, special unit attributes and of course fix the tables.

why not convert the existing pdf into text and dump it all into a wiki

(I'm also wondering just how many people are onto this game, as it seems about only a dozen actually post)

Good idea and count me in for input and review.

I'd agree it'll definitely need some developer review though to make sure what's been updated is corrected, in particular with rejigging of tables and game mechanics text.

The Wiki idea is also a good one as an online resource. However I'd see it as secondary source with the manual as the primary, i.e. cut and paste text and tables from .doc to .html format.

Another thing to bear in mind is the Scenario chapter - the manual lists 20 but there are in fact 42 in the game. I've pulled and compiled the text from the scenario text file. The next step would be to do a unit count on each one. Anybody doing this already or got a partial list?

Cheers

OK then. I will develop a Table of Contents and post it here later today. Then I will start piecing together a draft copy of the manual. Hope to have at least the text done by the weekend. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, if there is other data/info that needs to be included post it here.

Thanks,

Sorry for the delay, had a family emergency.  Here is the top two levels of the TOC. There are sub-headings below this that are not listed but will basically mirrir the original manual in topic coverage. I want to move all things UNIT related to the section covering units.  Things like Postures, Dispersal, LOS, Ranges, Digging IN, Destruction of HQs and Engineering Functions. I would like this to be comprehensive so it will include all special unit bonuses for combat and movement too.

Also, I want to move Infiltration Movement just after the ZOC section since they go hand in hand.

1.0 Starting a Game
            1.1 Scenario Selection
            1.2 Choosing Sides
            1.3 AI Settings
            1.4 PBEM Setup and Play
1.5 First Turn Checks and Initiative (basic phases explanation)
2.0 Game Interface
2.1 Map Scrolling and the Jump Map
2.2 Viewing / Selecting Units and Objectives on Map
            2.3 Game Scale
            2.4 Menus and Reports
3.0 Units
            3.1 Headquarters and Command Organizations
            3.2 Infantry
            3.3 Armor
            3.4 Artillery
            3.5 Anti-Tank
4.0 Sequence of Play (eliminating redundancy in CoCo manual section 5)
            4.1 Phase 1 - Supply Status
            4.2 Phase 2 - Initiative Determination
4.3 Phase 3 - Reinforcement
4.4 Phase 4 - Command Status
4.5 Phase 5 - Unit Recovery from Disruption / Dispersion
4.6 Phase 6 - Movement
4.7 Phase 7 - Direct Fire
4.8 Phase 8 - Assault
4.9 Phase 9 - Assault Execution
4.10 Phase 10 - Withdrawal / Advance After Assault
5.0 Miscellaneous Rules
            5.1 Night Turns
            5.2 Weather
            5.3 Soft Ground
            5.4 Limited Intelligence
6.0 Victory
            6.1 Reserve Points
7.0 Scenarios
Sort by size or alphabetically?
8.0 Scenario Editor
            8.1 Create Map
            8.2 Create Forces
            8.3 Assign Leadership
8.4 Limit on Number of Units (move under 8.2 Create Forces)
            8.5 Defining Scenario Parameters
8.6 Guidelines for Creating Units (move under 8.2 Create Forces)
9.0 Charts and Tables
Keep same structure as original manual but fix and better define all tables
10.0 Hot Key List
We have a Hot Key List thanks to Joe 98 and I will be getting the text together over the next few days.  Could someone compile the special unit bonuses?  If someone wants to start cleaning up the tables that would be appreciated.
So take a look and tell me what you think.

Hi Max

I'll sort out the Scenarios chapter as I've already started it. Will send something through by end of the weekend. Do you want to PM a mail address I can use?

I've also got Chapter 10 - Tables and Charts as a Word document. If you've got Adobe Acrobat it's possible to save the manual .pdf in the .doc format. I can start working through that but reckon it'd take me until at least the end of next week ... There's a lot there

Cheers

Well now you've made me think. There should at least be something basic we could put up on wiki, perhaps starting with this as a profile for now?

Of course, Combat Command is already taken...

I don't remember a way to check that, aside from just starting the scenario.

I have never set-up any wiki before, I think the most I ever did was a little editing or something years ago, so go for it.

Items missing in the manual:

Chart 10.8 Terrain. One column shows how terrain affects Assaults.

Note many of the terrain names include (ol) which means “overlay”.

Fort (overlay) is included.

Fort level 1, Fort level 2 and Fort level 3 are all missing. They need to be included.

-

Now refer to chart 10.3. Some terrain types are “overlay” and the word “overlay” is missing in every instance.

If a unit's supply level is "Limited"  or "None"  the manual is not clear on what effect this has on a unit

1 - who is under attack

2 - who is attacking.

The draft version of the manual is ready for Player review. How can I post it to the forum? It is a 1.3Mb zipped pdf file. Thanks.

A mod should be able to increase the size allowed for uploads. Barring that, a free file sharing site like Dropbox would allow you to post a link for others to grab it.

I don't think it's just the filesize, as you can't upload pdfs or zips.

Edit: Hope you don't mind Max 86 but here's the link to the draft document I've dropped on my Google site - here

Cheers

If a file is smaller than the limit, rename the extension to an allowed extension, then inform the public to rename the file after downloading.
