Status: offline 		Hi, I just ordered a new computer and it comes with xp installed. I was wondering if there will be any problem running spwaw. Will it work ok and will the sound work ok? Thanks very much.

Status: offline 		I have no problems with it running XP Pro with Geforce 4 Xtasy TI 4400 128mb video card, AMD XP 2000+ Proc, 512mb DDR PC2100 Ram with built in audio AC97 chipset, 100gb HD. Many gamers withing are running either Home or Pro without problems. Just ensure your drivers are updated as XP already installs DirectX 8.1a by default.

Status: offline 		I also have no problem out here - except the occasional and mysterious crash of SPWaW H2H when:
1) My internet is connected
2) I have other programs running
H2H apparently does not like the multidrive with XP, it can sometimes turn all black in the opening screen. This happens only once per startup, so restarting the game will remove the problem.

It is essential that you quit any and all programs before playing Spwaw (and most other games, anyway - the running programs eat the processor capacity). I have XP Home installed, with AMD 1800Ghz Athlon and otherwise basically same as Gmenfan.

That alone makes it the best OS out there.

I have a few older versions of Steel Panthers that don't reeeeeally like XP. Solution, XP handles more than one OS well.

When I turn on computer I can either let it default boot throught to XP or during boot up direct it to load Win 98 SE in my case (could even have Win 95 and Win 3.1 if I wanted to add that much redundancy).

Now I don't KNOW that OS choices earlier than XP couldn't do this same thing, but I DO know XP can.

Of course I had to install Win 98SE into a secondary hard drive location FIRST, and then load XP second as the new default OS.

If you don't already own the actual OS software, well in this dudes opinion you have already made the single biggest error in computer usage. NEVER EEEEEEEEEVER get a computer that does not come with genuine actual original software period.

If someone tries to sell me a computer without the original OS software, they will get told to do something painful to themselves:D .

I have noticed for the record, that SPWW2, SPMBT, SP 2 Modern Battles, SP 3 Brigade Combat and probably any software made with those programs in mind, will be better served on Win 98 or Win 95.

But thankfully, SPWaW runs on Win XP with zero trouble.
If you do indeed have trouble, then it is your hardware giving you the trouble and not your OS.

I run SPWaW on an XP machine with an 800 celeron and 256 ram but with a lame 8 meg video, and sound that are both onboard nothing special pieces of hardware.
Getting fancy, will get you in trouble all the time in my opinion.

How does your machine work with 256 meg ram? I've heard you should really have more than that for xp.

Hell if a program won't run with 256 I would tell the designer of the program to take his dumb program and shove it.

The only reason programs today need so much is the designers are getting lazy and just being sloppy in my opinion.

There is no reason that powerful computers need to get endlessly more powerful just to run programs that would never have been considered acceptable a year earlier.

Status: offline 		XP runs like a clock on 256 MB, and SP:WAW fortunately makes a relatively small footprint on your RAM. :D

However, if you should ever feel like running more graphic-intense games or LOTS of things at once, you can tell the difference between 256 MB DDR and 512 MB DDR. I did :cool:

Status: offline 		I can still remember my IBM PS1 386 system with a 33 mhz speed and an amazing 2 megs of ram all with a massive 100 meg hard drive.

It seemed so awesome. I didn't need to use my wife's **** electric typewriter with it's marginally amusing auto correction function.

Today I can do so many things, but in truth, a computer is just a typewriter to me, and a tool that gets me online to chat.

I never buy upgrades for games. Games either work or they don't.

I have XP now because a friend gave me the parts to upgrade system. Otherwise I would still have a 300 system with 64 ram and be employing Win 98SE.

Not because 98 is better (it isn't, even this idiot can see that much). But XP won't run on a system that doesn't meet the hardware requirements.

That doofus Bill probably could have made XP run on a lesser machine, but he is into making money now isn't he.

I am about to load a copy of Battlefield 1942 on the system today. If it runs fine, if not, I am not planning on caring. I have only acquired a friends copy to see if my son is interesed in fiddling with it.

Currently my wife has only been given the green light for Battlefront's Strategic Command.
No other game is currently being considered. I need a veeeeeeery good reason to get bent out of shape to upgrade my perfectly functional computer for the sake of a game.

Status: offline 		Les - You don't need 256 Megs RAM to run WAW. You don't have to have that much for demanding 3D apps either - but it sure does help.

Many apps run better in Win98 and WinXP with 512 Megs RAM - no question MS train Sim runs better. No question Photoshop 6 - a real memory hog - will load and run better. No question MOHAA, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Shturomovik, Flashpoint and others will run better with 512 Megs RAM.

WinWord? I have, am not exaggerating, a 1500+ page Word doc file - from the elves in Redmond no less. Can't imagine loading it with anything other than 512 Megs RAM. Excel loads huge spreadsheets in seconds, I never have to wait. (Am talking spreads with 5000+ lines.)

When - if - I go back to the front-runner 3D games, I will consider 1 Gig RAM for my WinXP machine. RAM is still cheap, very much so, maybe still the best hardware bargain out there.

Status: offline 		That's very interesting. The whole reason I'm getting a new machine is I will be semi-retiring in a fairly small rv and travelling. I was seriously never going to upgrade again from my k6/2-400 but a full size computer won't fit very well and I ordered a laptop. It comes with xp and 256 meg ram. I have been considering wiping the hard drive and installing my win98 but, other than it's a memory hog, I've heard too many good things about xp. I plan to buy Empire Earth and Neverwinter Nights and will see how these work with the 256.

Status: offline 		Haven't got a need for massive sum of Ram where SPWaW is concerned, nope.
I have 256 because my buddy said hey why not get double (was originally going to go from 64 to 128).

He said I would appreciate it.

My only demanding use for Ram routinely is for my scanner.

Which unfortunately must use Win 98SE due to the company not making drivers for it (quick just prior to XP what a pain eh).

I have seen Neverwinter Nights Rich have you played it before? You are in for a treat. Only RPG software to get the nod from Sarge.

Status: offline 		NWN won't run on my system unfortunately, but to look at it, it is the closest you will encounter, to actually being able to roleplay in the old original way while on a computer.

It is not Everquest (which is not roleplaying to this person).

It uses what will rapidly become obvious to a gamer, the D&D3 game for details and game design specifics. It is almost like playing D&D3 on your computer.

Status: offline 		My SPWAW don't work att all with XP :( When I start the game and click first unit comes black screen and the it goes back to windows. Does anyone knows what I shoud do?

My system:
1400 TB
Radeon 64 DDR VIVO
512 sdram
I have SPWAW ver 7.1

I think that problems is in Radeon's driver.... :(

Status: offline 		Mouse83 try running the game directly from the :\Steel Panthers World at War\mech.exe file bypassing the auto run menu. You can also run it in compatibilty mode by right clicking on the mech.exe file and selecting it to run in Win 98 mode if your still having issues. How did your arrive at 7.1 a new install or frequent upgrades to it? Also try deleting these files in the :\Steel Panthers World at War\save steel.prf and holder.txt. Update soundcard and video drivers, with the release of the AWESOME Radieon 9700 they have a new driver base.

I just got NWN even though I'm still waiting for my computer. :-) It's a Dell and will be here next week.

The huge advantage of NWN is that once you finish it, the game continues forever. To date there are more than 1400 user made modules available for download.

I am interested in knowing the king of the heap best all round contender basically because it's for my wife.
I don't really play those games much, but I am always on the look out for a decent justification for a family oriented reason to upgrade video capability.

I won't upgrade just for my needs.

As it stands my son can't play Battlefield 1942 on current hardware, so now I just need a decent reason for her to want an improvement hehe.

What does Icewind Dale have for computer needs. I don't think I can currently run NWN.

No game is working perfect.
But thanks anyway gmenfan. It's nice to see that there is people who try to help :)

And now back to play megacampaign... :)
