Nik - further to my earlier flippant - though no less accurate for that - response, I thought I would answer a little more helpfully. This is an annual contest between European nations. Each country comes up with a song that they vote to put forward as their entry for the contest. In days past, as you can imagine if you look at the pop charts - the UK and Ireland were regular winners, while countries like Norway were well known for scoring null points with frightening regularity. Cliff Richard and Sandie Shaw were notable stars to take part. The incomparable ABBA won for Sweden in 1973(?) or 4(?). I think Celine Dion represented France or Switzerland one year. So as you can see, the competiton is capable of some class. However, these are exceptions to the rule. The competition is mostly for freaks and losers who couldn't sing a note if their lives depended upon it. Moreover, the voting is done by each country (they cannot vote for themselves) on a sliding scale. Surprise surprise, the voting tends to go in blocks i.e. all the former Soviet Republics vote for each other, the Balkan nations do the same, the Turks and Greeks give each other null points, and NO ONE votes for the hated British. Like we care..... Hope that's helpful, but in summary - its a load of old b******
