I used to care, when I was about 10 years old, and the United Kingdom won with such all-time classics as "Save All Your Kisses For Me" by the poor man's ABBA, or "Making Your Mind Up" by the other mob with 2 girls and 2 boys.....

Same here, back when there was only ONE channel on the TV.

Tithe.....

just survived setting up my first Webinar meeting with a super stressed out Presenter hovering over my shoulder. And this before COFFEE.

I'll see your log! and raise you a Rock.

oh yeah? well Joe Wilkerson once told me....."You can't afford to be caught between a Rock and a wooden place" Besides which....I also invented the Internet.

Now, Now Nik... I know you didn't invent the internet. Sending an e-mail to Al Gore doesn't entitle you to that claim...even if you have met a man 20 years ago who was in the French Foreign Legion at a shrine for Buddhist monks who were hauling Logs! over the Himalyans to China whilst on sabbatical from Fermi when they were inventing the bomb...

Nik - further to my earlier flippant - though no less accurate for that - response, I thought I would answer a little more helpfully.

This is an annual contest between European nations. Each country comes up with a song that they vote to put forward as their entry for the contest.

In days past, as you can imagine if you look at the pop charts - the UK and Ireland were regular winners, while countries like Norway were well known for scoring null points with frightening regularity.

Cliff Richard and Sandie Shaw were notable stars to take part. The incomparable ABBA won for Sweden in 1973(?) or 4(?). I think Celine Dion represented France or Switzerland one year. So as you can see, the competiton is capable of some class.

However, these are exceptions to the rule. The competition is mostly for freaks and losers who couldn't sing a note if their lives depended upon it.

Moreover, the voting is done by each country (they cannot vote for themselves) on a sliding scale. Surprise surprise, the voting tends to go in blocks i.e. all the former Soviet Republics vote for each other, the Balkan nations do the same, the Turks and Greeks give each other null points, and NO ONE votes for the hated British. Like we care.....

Hope that's helpful, but in summary - its a load of old b******

So instead of actually being a contest to choose the best song, it's more of a referendum on the most unpopular eu country atm?

Pretty much....also its difficult to find anything that could even loosely be described as a "best song" recently; least c***** song would be more accurate.

P.S Sorry, am I coming across as a little negative on the whole Eurovision thing?

Not sure...your opinion and point of view are nuanced and subtle. It's hard to make out where you really stand on that whole issue.

Not EU. There are dozens of non-EU countries in the mix, and I don't really know if places like Azerbaijan or Israel can be considered "European" at all...

I assumed anarchyintheuk meant to say Europe not European Union - apologies if that was not the case. However, Azerbaijan is in Europe. Israel is not but I guess is allowed in this European competition for the same reason that they take part in the European football championship i.e. are part of UEFA; namely, playing with middle east countries like Iran, Syria etc may give rise to a crowd control issue

Strange - its a member of EUFA....

Israel aside (which is understandable) if a country does not have to be in a specific continent to be in that continent's football union, I vote England joins Oceania; we might qualify for every World Cup then

Anyone catch Hangover 2?  Not quite as funny as the first but still a very good laugh all the way through.
